SIGN THE PETITION - CITIZENS UNITED HAS TO GO!!!

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

This is the year we have to get it right regardless of who's in the majority - Repuglycons or Democrats - in the interest of making that happen, there are several key petitions that are being circulated that are pivotal to the overturn of egregious transgressions over the rights of US Citizens.  One of those is to overturn the CITIZENS UNITED law enacted by the "subprime court"   -  (they stopped being "supreme" a long time ago).

Please read and sign the petition - pass it on to your friends and relatives and associates - this is where WE THE PEOPLE can make our voices heard.

STAY BLESSED

Five years ago, our country suffered one of the most damaging blows ever dealt to our democracy, when the Supreme Court handed down the awful Citizens United decision.

Since this devastating decision came down, major corporations, the Koch brothers, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have poured untold millions into races up and down the ballot. As a result, the 2014 midterms turned out to be the most expensive election in history.

That's why Citizens United has got to go. And that's why, for the last 5 years, Democracy for America members across the country have been fighting back.

In 2012, DFA partnered with Senator Bernie Sanders to support a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. Nearly 85,000 DFA members added their name to that petition.

Now we're taking the fight directly to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce -- which has flooded politics with dark money in the aftermath of Citizens United -- and we need your help.

On Wednesday, January 21 -- the fifth anniversary of the Citizens United decision -- we're joining more than one hundred organizations from across the country to deliver 5 MILLION signatures to the Chamber's headquarters in Washington, DC.

Together with our allies, we will send a clear message that our democracy can't be bought and that those who try will be exposed and opposed.

Before Wednesday's historic petition delivery, will you help DFA reach 100,000 signatures in support of Sen. Bernie Sanders' constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United? Click here to add your name now.

At Democracy for America, we've made significant progress along with our allies in fighting the corruption of Citizens United:
  • In more than 600 cities and in 16 states, DFA members have helped lead several campaigns to go on the record against Citizens United -- like DFA activist Michelle Sutter's incredible work in California to pass the Overturn Citizens United Act.
  • We've helped successfully elect strong progressives, like Senators Al Franken and Tammy Baldwin, who -- along with 53 other Senators last year -- stood strong in favor of a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.
  • Because we need a Democrat in the White House to take back the Supreme Court and reverse Citizens United, with the support of 87.6% of DFA members, we joined with MoveOn to build a movement that can convince Elizabeth Warren to run for president. Today, DFA and MoveOn kicked off the Run Warren Run campaign in New Hampshire, days after opening up operations in Iowa.
With 80% of Americans opposing Citizens United, it's clear that people across the political spectrum are sick of money corrupting politics and want Citizens United to be reversed. On Wednesday, we'll take one big step toward realizing that vision.

Add your name in support of Senator Bernie Sanders' constitutional amendment to repeal Citizens United -- and help DFA reach the 100,000 mark before Wednesday's delivery!

Thank you for fighting back with us.

P.S. We've also got some late-breaking news! Sen. Bernie Sanders will join us on Wednesday at 8pm ET for a DFA Live conference call following Tuesday's State of the Union speech by President Obama. We'll discuss several issues -- including the fight to overturn Citizens United -- and Sen. Sanders will answer your questions live. Want to talk with Bernie? Sign up now for Wednesday’s special DFA Live call with Bernie Sanders.

Rick Weiland for Senate in South Dakota shows how to run a campaign for the people

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

Well, we're getting down to the wire - and my emails (all five of them) have been inundated with messages from all over the candidates throughout the US, as well as locally.  But I came across something that so defines the campaign and the struggle between the greedy fat cats of the repuglycon party and the Democratic party that I had to share it - I hope the video comes through so you'll get as much  kick and an inspiration out of this as I did.

Rick Weiland, Democrat from South Dakota, is running for Senate.  This is his campaign:

“Can you win a seat in the United States Senate by driving around in a minivan, strumming a guitar and singing about the evils of money in politics?”

That’s the opening line of a Huffington Post piece about an insurgent Democrat whose bolt-from-the-blue campaign for U.S. Senate is now the hottest race in the country and could be the tipping point that saves the Senate from GOP control.

Wait, what? Some dude driving a people-powered minivan around the back roads of South Dakota is about to shock the world?

Yep. And get a load of this semi-viral music video he just released. Yes, MUSIC VIDEO. Once you see it, you won’t be able to get his catchy chorus out of your head.

Just click here to watch this Elizabeth Warren Democrat’s unforgettable song -- and try not to be charmed by it (like Rachel Maddow was a few days ago).
That’s Rick Weiland. Name ring a bell?

As Rachel Maddow highlighted on her Thursday show, Democracy for America endorsed Rick waaaaaaaaay back in March when no one outside of South Dakota knew who the heck he was -- and when the establishment didn’t think he had a snowball’s chance in hell. Since March, DFA members have been contacting thousands of voters across South Dakota -- and the polls are now tighter than a tick.

Rick Weiland is an excellent example of why my brother Howard launched the 50 State Strategy ten years ago with the birth of Democracy for America. And that’s why Gov. Dean just announced that Rick is being elevated into the “Dean Dozen” -- DFA’s short list of top priority campaigns.

Because of DFA members like you who got Rick’s back months ago, now he has the momentum to WIN -- and help Elizabeth Warren build the “no one’s bought me” Senate caucus the moment his boots hit the floors of Capitol Hill.

Do you want to elect another Elizabeth Warren Democrat and save the Senate from the grip of the GOP and Mitch McConnell? Then chip in $3 right now to Rick Weiland and let’s get this done.

Thank you for stepping up for Rick. Together, we’re unstoppable.

P.S. Remember that quote at the top of this email -- where the Huffington Post asked if someone can win a U.S. Senate seat by "driving around in a minivan, strumming a guitar and singing about the evils of money in politics?” Let’s make sure the answer is YES! Chip in $3 now to Rick’s people-powered campaign.

He totally sums it up in a song.  And what a song!!

I think we can come up with some really great concepts to piggy back off of in order to get the rest of the fence sitters on board vis a vis the other republycon incumbents who are clogging up the democratic process, don't you?  What say you HipHop artists out there?  Can you write something without using profanity or the "b" or "n" words to engage your peers?  You have three weeks and counting.

AUGUST 9 MIDTERM PRIMARY COMING UP - BE PREPARED

By Gloia Dulan-Wilson

These little primaries across the US, will make the difference between who we have in office in Congress and other key positions in the fall; so please don't sleep them.

I just received this solicitation about the AUGUST 9, 2014 PRIMARY IN HAWAII:

Jim Dean <info@democracyforamerica.com> wrote:

Gloria --

We have just two weeks left to protect Social Security from a corporate Democrat -- by re-electing progressive hero Brian Schatz to the Senate.
The stakes are high. Schatz's opponent in the Democratic primary for the Hawai'i Senate seat, Colleen Hanabusa, voted for the Simpson-Bowles plan that would have cut Social Security benefits. If Schatz wins, it will send a message to Democrats across America that attacking Social Security is a losing proposition.

With the primary coming up fast on August 9, Brian Schatz needs our help urgently. Chip in $3 today to send a Social Security hero back to the U.S. Senate.
Hanabusa has been desperately trying to evade responsibility for her vote to cut Social Security and Medicare. At a recent debate, Schatz looked directly at Hanabusa and asked if she regretted her vote for the Simpson-Bowles plan to cut Social Security. She tried to say her vote wouldn't have cut benefits or raise the retirement age.

Schatz then pulled out his trump card. He read out a letter the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare wrote to her, pleading with her to vote against the Simpson-Bowles plan that would have cut benefits and raised the retirement age. The facts are clear -- Hanabusa can't be trusted to protect Social Security.
Sen. Brian Schatz is fighting to expand Social Security and raise the minimum wage. He will combat inequality with progressive leadership. We don't need another corporate Democrat who folds on the issues that matter most. Let's make sure we keep Brian Schatz in the Senate for Hawai'i and for our families.

Stand with Brian Schatz in the fight to expand Social Security: donate $3 right now to help him win the primary!
Thank you for fighting for Social Security and strong progressives across the country,

- Jim

I'm sending my contribution in, and I'm also spreading the word so that the rest of us don't sit idly by and think that because it's not in our district, it doesn't matter.  We have to unite across the board, across the US.  This MIDTERM ELECTION is the last chance we have to make a concrete difference in this country, our lives, our economy, our educational system.  You see the vultures under bonehead Boehner are circling trying to distract us with bogus law suits.  We have to be proactive in our reactions.

SIGN THE PETITION TO TURN THE WATER BACK ON IN DETROIT

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson
Does somebody really have to tell these idiots that denying water to human beings in inhumane, unhealthy and should be a punishable crime  because it is also a heath and safety hazard?    Well I guess so, because they
have been
depriving the
people of
DETROIT
of water for
weeks!!!
How insipid
how inhumane!!

The newly
elected mayor
should be impeached
immediately and
replaced with a real
human being.
The people should have
taken over the water plant
long ago.

This petition has to be
circulated - but more
than that, President
Obama has to step in and
put a stop to megalomaniacal
behavior that would put
people's lives at
risk.

While you're signing the
petition, sign one to replace
the mayor so that the
real healing of Detroit can
begin.
Stay Blessed &
ECLECTICALLY BLACK

Sign the petition: Declare a public health emergency in Detroit

The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department is shutting off water at thousands of Detroit residences each week, even if their account debt was incurred by previous owners. That means families don't have water to drink, wash their hands or flush their toilets in their own homes.
This is a clear violation of the human right to water, and without access to water, lack of sanitation poses serious health concerns.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services can do something about it. By declaring a public health emergency, the federal government can step in to turn the water back on for all Detroit residents.
Sign the petition to President Obama and Health Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell: Declare a public health emergency and turn the water back on in Detroit!
Petition text:
Thousands of Detroit families don't have running water in their homes. This is an embarrassment for our country, a violation of basic human rights, and a serious threat to public health. Please declare a public health emergency in Detroit, end the shutoffs, and turn the water back on.
