MARCUS GARVEY and his impact on Black America 101 Years Later

By Gloria DULAN-Wilson

HELLO ALL:

It's November 2020.  It seems that all the great things that Marcus Garvey did or initiated was in November.  Garvey arrived in the US in November 1916 looking to meet Booker T. Washington, who had died prior their meeting.   In November 1919 he started the UNIA - UNIVERSAL NEGRO IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION.

This is an interesting account of the history of the Great Marcus Garvey seen in the lens of the 21st century.  The things thar amaze me are those who had the opportunity to see him first hand, and are alive today to tell  about it, and how they look younger than most of us.  And some of those who were more or less pundits or critics and seemed to look with derision on Garvey.

I also interested because my Grandmother (my Mom's Mom) was a Garveyite - so I grew up seeing pictures of him as a kid, and hearing some of the things they learned.  Additionally, as a senior at Lincoln University in the 60s, it was mandatory that each of us write a Senior Thesis - that had to be well researched, annotated, and then presented and defended in front of our department chairs and professors.  Mine was on Marcus Garvey and W.E.B DuBois (duboys - not dubwah - for those who think he used the French pronunciation).  I spent hours in Lincoln University's Vail Memorial Library pouring over authentic news clippings and articles (this was before the days of Google, microfische, and other archival devices - Lincoln had a fantastic Black reference department and repository), and learned a lot of why the rivalry between the two occurred and was encouraged by whites.

DuBois was proud of his ersatz French Huguenot heritage.  Carolyn Bond Daye, who at that time was a Harvard, used that to blow smoke up his (derriere) and inflate his ego.  He became the darling of the white racists who were looking for someone to tear Garvey down and besmirch him among the Black Bourgeoisie - and gave him the front page of the New York Times and other white papers who wouldn't ordinarily give Black people the time of day, to do so.  In other words, DuBois was used as the instrument for part of Garvey's undermining.  (my teachers taught me that any time whites give Blacks the headlines in their media, they are up to no good - especially if that headline is used to go up against another Black person).  Vail memorial library used to have tons of copies of DuBois making all kinds of allegations against Garvey; in return the whites were funding the NAACP.  Likewise A Phillip Randolph was getting handsomely paid as well.  I remember reading this and losing all respect for DuBois, who actually ended up having to flee the US in the 60s to move to Africa after they tried to brand him a communist.  He later apologized to Garvey - too damned late - when you think of all the Black people who could have been living a much better life had he had his insight 50 years earlier.

The sabotage of the Black Star Line ships arose, not because Garvey was a megalomaniac -as postured by one of the commentators; but because he did not trust light skinned Blacks.  He felt they were so busy trying to be white they would look for opportunities to lord it over their darker skinned brothers.  For that reason, he surrounded himself with dark skinned Brothers he felt he could trust - ignoring the fact that, like most Black people, they had not had the opportunity to gain the expertise required to be accountants, negotiate with whites (they were totally intimidated because of the recent past history with white abuse of Black people, feared reprisal, and would take what they said at face value, rather than take a chance and dispute or disagree with them).  They were also too embarrassed to confess to Garvey they didn't know what they were doing - so he relied to his detriment on these deeply traumatized brothers to be his emissaries and get things done.

This documentary does not adequately cover the BACK TO AFRICA MOVEMENT that Garvey spawned, and the fact that nearly 12 million African Americans were ready to go; or the conspiracy between Firestone Rubber and the US to prevent him from having any friendly reception in Africa by lying to the chiefs, telling them that Garvey was bringing millions of niggers to Africa to take over and get rid of the chiefs.  This is one of the reasons why the BACK TO AFRICA MOVEMENT, which was originally greeted with much anticipation, was withdrawn, as African leaders began to believe whites over their own people.

I have often said that if BLACK people had been able to expatriate to Africa in 1919-1923, we would have WAKANDA today.

So, what am I saying?  Look at the documentary, but take it with a grain of salt - because they are only giving you half the story.  The fat guy with the glasses is particularly aggrivating to me because of his acerbic remarks and demeanor in reference to Garvey.  The look on his face is enough for me to see that he is only relating academically, but not realizing the intrinsic value of what our dear Brother was trying to accomplish.

By the way, for all my LINCOLN UNIVERSITY Alumni, Dr. Sam Anderson, LU 1966, is featured in the documentary speaking on the intrinsic value of Marcus Garvey HAIL ! HAIL !  LINCOLN !!

Garvey definitely did have a big ego.  He was a LEO and it goes with the territory - Also, if you don't support and believe in yourself, you can hardly expect anyone else to do so.  Black in the day, it was that confidence that galvanized millions of Black people.
We really need to study Garvey - not from a jaundiced 21 century standpoint, but from the intrinsic values he stood for that we really need to re-inculcate now - because after over 100 years - WHERE IS OUR GOVERNMENT? WHERE IS OUR EMPIRE, WHERE CAN THE BLACK MAN/WOMAN STAND UP AND BE COUNTED AND RESPECTED IN THE WORLD - IN HIS OWN LAND?

The crackers made sure that no Black man since Garvey can stand up before Black people and galvanize them in the manner in which he did to make AFRICA FOR THE AFRICANS - AT HOME AND ABROAD!

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO PICK UP THE MANTLE AND MAKE IT HAPPEN?

Guest Article: Back to Africa - Black Press Business/Economic Feature Week of July 26, 2018

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

The evidence is more and more compelling that our ties between ourselves, the Diaspora, and our Motherland, Africa, are strengthening and growing more and more solid.  As a result, we have to become more and knowledgeable about the issues and opportunities that exist or are potential between us - especially since every other force on the planet is trying hard to keep us apart, separated, ignorant, victimized and poor.

Image result for AFRICA

We are coming up on the 400th year of our captivity and kidnapping from Africa, our enslavement, and the first ship landing on American soil in 1619.  The fact is those ships of horror historically have already left African shores with our precious ancestors stacked on top of each other, or thrown overboard.

We had actually begun our initial reunification in the 1920's, thanks to the wisdom, knowledge and insight of Marcus Garvey - but the effort was stopped by the combined efforts of British and American forces (the same forces that enslaved us to begin with) coming together and conspiring to sink our ships, incarcerate our leaders, and break up the relationship between Africa and African Americans by telling each of us lies about the other.

The second major effort of reunification between Africa and African Americans came in the 60s during the Black Power Era, when we truly began to return to our African roots.  We started truly returning to our African roots by wearing natural hair, Afrocentric clothes, making movies, writing books, poems, and making pilgrimages to the Motherland to trace our African roots.  We changed our names to reflect wherever we thought we came from, learned African dances and traditions, and made plans to repatriate to our homeland and build our homes and our futures there.  We even demanded that African and African history be taught in the schools so our children would not continue to be whitewashed.

The upshot of the whole thing is the deliberate destruction of our relationship - via the so-called "Cold war" between Russia and the US - something Africa had absolutely nothing to do with - by fighting it out on African soil.  Subsequently, while Africa was aggressively shedding her colonial monsters - they had the audacity to try to claim that Africa owed them money for their seizure of her lands and the subjugation of her people.

Coming into the 21st Century there has been a resurgence of African/African American relations - aided in large part by technology - internet, cell phones, overthrow of despotic colonial dominated leaders - and the progress was such that, once again conspiracy has raised iit's ugly head - via the new Chinese invasion to siphon off African autonomy via pseudo building of properties that are not reflective of African needs or wants.

But this time, something is new - African Americans and Africans are more in tune with each other and collaborating with each other than ever.  Perhaps it's in part because the first Black president of the US is also of African Heritage (Kenyan); but it's more likely that there has been growing interest in Africa long before the 2016 election, with increased travel between the US and the Continent - making the roots deeper and more solid that ever before.  Both Africans and African Americans have been victims of a common enemy - and suffer from "post traumatic slave/colonization shock syndrome" (yeah, I just came up with that).

But we also share a resiliency and a determination to not remain under the foot of ignorance or oppression - and the opportunities are now even greater for the regeneration of a full fledged successful, progressive amalgamation of our ingenuity, skill, creativity and talent.  This time we cannot afford to be caught on the late show.  We cannot be ignorant of this wonderful opportunity to ensure our and our children's futures.

Interestingly enough the movie "Black Panther" -  a work of science fiction (fact) has reawakened our nascent African affinity on many levels.  While there had already been some stirrings among African Americans,  this movie has catapulted our interests in the possibilties 1000%.

Black Panther's WAKANDA  started a Paradigm Shift

Whites - especially the New York Times - are already smelling the possibilities and our  progress and have started staking their claim - Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa - are all in their gun sites - just to mention a few.  If they know this, we should be so far ahead of the curve that they will be trailing behind us.  This may be our last opportunity for reunity.  We cannot afford to be weighed in the balance and found wanting.  If we are going to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of slave ships coming to the US, it should be by the reverse, with as many of her descendants having a pivotal interest in the Motherland from which they were stolen.  The time to start is now; the ones to do it is us.  This is an effort at a wake up call - regardless of what your educational or financial level.  This s our time to not be on the late show.

NOTE:  Please be advised that when I say Diaspora, I mean all Black descendents of African Heritage - USA, South America, Haiti, the Caribbean - wherever those ships landed and dropped us off - i.e., ECLECTICALLY BLACK PEOPLE!!

Back to Africa

Former US President Barack Obama went to his ancestral home in Kogelo Village, Kenya. Obama’s grandmother lives in Kogelo where he danced at the opening of a youth center launched by his half-sister Auma Obama's Sauti Kuu Foundation.

The first Black American president is leading what’s expected to be Black families and descendants back to Africa. A son of Africa, Obama’s primary gig in Africa was Johannesburg to give the 2018 Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture. In reality, Obama’s appearance was made in partnership with the multi-billion dollar-endowed Motsepe Foundation. Obama’s benefactor, Dr. Patrice Motsepe is founder and chairman of African Rainbow Minerals and one of Africa’s Black billionaires. Celebrity Net Worth reports that both Barack and Michelle Obama’s net worth as $40 million. Both are examples of the up-and-coming contemporary African in the Diaspora.

The requested action is “Send money back to Africa.” The continental African Union (AU) union consists of all 55 countries on the African continent. The Diaspora is an AU ambassadorial post to "invite and encourage the full participation of the African Diaspora as an important part of our continent, in the building of the African Union". The African Diaspora are people who were enslaved and shipped to the Americas via the Atlantic slave trade between the 16th and 19th centuries, with their largest populations in Brazil, the United States and Haiti. The AU defines the African Diaspora as consisting: "of people of African origin living outside the continent, irrespective of their citizenship and nationality and who are willing to contribute to the development of the continent".

Thirteen million Africans were shipped to the New World; 10.7 million survived the Middle Passage disembarking in North America, the Caribbean and South America. Large numbers of Diaspora Blacks live and work in high-income countries and among prosperous populations. Most Diaspora members' incomes are modest by the standards of rich nations, and their savings might seem meager in the world of development funding, but collectively they can add up to staggering amounts of money. Worldwide, African Diaspora members have accumulated an estimated US$53 billion in savings ad remittances.

Mounds of opportunity exist in the African Diaspora. Moving cash within Africa is an untapped opportunity for money transfer. Remittances to sub-Saharan-Africa rose to $37.8 billion in 2017. The development potential for Africa's Diaspora is “in human capital" of knowledge and expertise gained while working abroad. The World Bank and other development partners say that the total money transfers by African migrants to their region or country of origin grew to $35.2 billion, in 2015.

We should think Blacks of the Diaspora share values, interests and heritage. The Diaspora’s Blacks could all get rich by connecting and working together. According to the AU, links between the African Diaspora and African development are already happening. Diaspora members already invest in real estate, entrepreneurial businesses, and capital markets. Sometimes they pool their money with friends or form an investment consortium.

Merging of the mindsets and monies of Africans of the Diaspora is the AU’s goal. Blacks can be Diaspora benefactors by matching keen entrepreneurial sensibilities, strong cultural ties to partners in the ancestral homeland. Africa’s Diaspora accumulates an estimated US$53 billion every year.

The African Union Commission is seeking to implement the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (CFTA). The African Continental Free Trade Agreement is a noteworthy achievement in African diplomacy, trade, and economic development. The CFTA has the potential to cover 1.2 billion people and over $4 trillion in combined consumer and business spending. The CFTA opens the continent to new investors and better opportunities for its entrepreneurs.

Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, a Ghanaian national (from Zimbabwe), is the Permanent Representative of the African Union Representational Mission to the United States of America.  She recently invited the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Quartey Thomas Kwesi to Washington to discuss next steps for implementing the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (CFTA).  The African Continental Free Trade Agreement (CFTA) is a noteworthy achievement. A groundbreaking achievement in African diplomacy, trade, and economic development the CFTA has the potential to cover 1.2 billion people and over $4 trillion in combined consumer and business spending opens up the continent to new investors and better opportunities for its entrepreneurs.  Intra-African trade is expected to skyrocket, and with it, industry and manufacturing. At the same time, the agreement introduces opportunities to re-approach existing trade relationships, like the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), to make trade more beneficial for all.

My Response to: Backlash Erupts Over Sean "Diddy" Combs & Jay Z’s Buy Black App

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

Backlash Erupts Over Sean "Diddy" Combs & Jay Z’s Buy Black App

I was just reading this article on BlackList Pub, and it struck me as rather odd that there should be a "backlash" against Diddy and Jay Z wanting to start a Buy Black App.  I haven't broken an article down in eons, but this one got to me, so I had to respond - of course you know, as always, my comments are in red and all caps:

SO HERE IT GOES:

"Backlash Erupts Over Sean "Diddy" Combs & Jay Z’s Buy Black App"  I COULDN'T BELIEVE THERE WOULD BE SUCH AN UPROAR OVER SUCH A POSITIVE ENDEAVOR.  BUT AFTER READING THE ARTICLE, I WAS A LITTLE ANNOYED AT HOW MISLEADING THE HEADLINES WERE.  GENERALLY SPEAKING A "BACKLASH" IMPLIES MASSES OF PEOPLE RETALIATING AGAINST SOMETHING WE BLACK PEOPLE HAVE DONE, OR TRIED TO DO.)

(BACKLASH: a strong and adverse reaction by a large number of people, especially to a social or political development. - GOOGLE)

The creator of the cultural shopping app, Spendwith, responds to comments made by Music Mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, in a recent article, that he and Jay-Z are looking into developing a ‘buy black’ app  (HARDLY A BACKLASH - SINCE IT'S JUST ONE RESPONSE, NOT AN UPROAR FROM A GROUP OR MOB)
In a GQ article titled, "Diddy Opens up About Biggie’s Death and the Secret Project," the hip-hop icon reveals he’s working with Jay-Z on an app that will allow users to look at a given city or neighborhood and see where the black-owned and black-friendly businesses are. (EXCELLENT!!!)

Although Diddy also spoke about Biggie’s death in the article, it was his comments about the app that stirred up a lot of emotions and generated a flood of responses. Many social media users highlighted that there were already several ‘Buy Black’ app solutions. And the latter is true. (THIS NOT TRUE – THE ONLY BUY BLACK APP ON MY iPHONE IS THE "WALL STREET BUYBLACK" APP – DON'T GET FOOLED)

Screen shot of my iPhone App page - no BuyBlack Apps except for
Black Wall Street

iPhone and android users are not short on options in the Google and iTunes stores when it comes to buy black apps, which means that Diddy and Jay-Z’s idea is nothing new(I'M OPEN; I MAY HAVE OVERLOOKED THEM – SHOW ME THE APPS!!!)

In fact, one app that’s already bridging the spending gap for not only Black owned businesses but other minority groups is Spendwith. (SO, THIS IS NOT REALLY A BACKLASH, BUT A SIDE-WAYS COMMERCIAL FOR Spendwith!!!)
Touted as culture-based shopping app, Spendwith empowers users to crowdsource the commerce-related social media posts of businesses and brands, and identify these posts by cultural identity, including black-owed businesses and brands. The app provides a place where users can save these posts to shopping lists, create new posts, share shopping lists and connect with other users.

Responding to the revelation of the app development by the Hip- Hop icons, CEO and Co-Founder of Spendwith, Jibril Sulaiman, said: “I agree with the critical comments made by many social media users, Diddy and Jay Z should take a look at what Naz has done with Queensbridge Ventures, and use an extension of their celebrity status to galvanize investments in solutions like Spendwith to help support black businesses and brands."
(NAZ HAS DONE A WONDERFUL JOB – AND THERE ARE SO MANY MORE TRAILS BLAZED AS HE PROGRESSES THAT OUR YOUTH AND HIS PEERS CAN NOW FOLLOW; BUT REMEMBER – WE GOT 400+ YEARS OF CATCH UP TO DO – SO THERE IS MORE THAN ENOUGH ROOM FOR OPTIONS – DID VISA TELL MASTER CARD THAT THEY HAD MORE THAN ENOUGH? DID AMERICAN EXPRESS TELL CART BLANCHE THERE WERE TOO MANY? WHAT ABOUT DISCOVER CARD? I THINK IT'S RIDICULOUS TO TELL OTHER BLACK PROGRESSIVE BUSINESSES TO NOT DO SOMETHING BECAUSE YOU HAVE ONE MEASLY CARD APP - SMH)

Diddy’s motivation for wanting to develop the app is to actively move the Black race forward. But Sulaiman has a better idea how the celebrity could use his resources to help Blacks gain economic power through an app. He said, “Don’t build it yourself. Create a seed/pre-seed stage investment firm that invests in that Black tech company that will in turn scale their innovative solution."

Aside from social media users underscoring the fact there were already many buy Black apps (AGAIN, WHERE – SHOW ME!!!). There were also questions. Questions like ‘why not an app for women or Latinos?’ (NO PROBLEM WITH THEIR HAVING AN APP – BUT BUYBLACK APPS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE SUBJECTED OR SUBJUGATED TO OTHER HODGE PODGE APPS – NOR, AS MR. SULAIMAN CLAIMED,WOULD HAVING A BUY BLACK APP PROHIBIT OUR AFRICAN BROTHERS AND SISTERS FROM USING OR BENEFITING FROM THE CARD, SINCE THEY ARE BLACK – THINK ABOUT IT)

I think many people on social media have valid point," said Sulaiman. “I realized during my time working for a local African American chamber of commerce that many groups, not just Black people have initiatives to support businesses and brands based on cultural or demographic identity."

Spendwith addresses this concern by providing an app {THAT} empowers its users to highlight businesses and brands of many cultures and demographics.(AND THEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM - )

Pointing out the irrelevance of another Buy Black app as well as opportunities to partner with a brand that achieves far much more, Sulaiman said, “Diddy, what if people in Africa wanted to use your app in a largely black continent? They couldn’t, (IRRELEVANCE???!!! AGAIN, THIS IS A STUPID ASSUMPTION, SINCE AFRICANS ARE BLACK AND ARE AUTOMATICALLY INCLUDED IN ANY EFFORT TO BUY OR SPEND OR SUPPORT BLACK BUSINESSS) but they’d be able to use Spendwith because we allow users to identify business and brands by tribe and other region specific identifiers.”

I THINK WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO NOT ONLY HAVE A FULLY IDENTIFABLE BUYBLACK APP, AND TO MAKE SURE IT'S NOT WATERED DOWN, BUT THAT THE PROCEEDS GO SPECIFICALLY TO BLACK OWNED BUSINESSES – SO THAT THE DOLLARS CIRCULATE IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY – NOT PASSING THROUGH OTHER FILTERS BEFORE IT FINALLY BENEFITS THE COMMUNITY AND THE BUSINESSES IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY.  ADDITIONALLY, NOW THAT AFRICA HAS DECIDED TO DO A UNIFORM TRADE AGREEMENT THAT WOULD INCORPORATE ALL THE REGIONS OF AFRICA, THE ISSUE OF "TRIBAL" DISTINCTION WOULD NO LONGER BE NECESSARY OR DESIRABLE.)

I APPLAUD COMBS AND JAY-Z FOR TAKING THE STAND AND THE STANCE TO FOCUS ON BLACK PEOPLE FIRST – ASIAN AND LATINO BROTHERS ALREADY HAVE IN EFFECT MANY WAYS IN WHICH THE DOLLARS CIRCULATE BACK INTO THEIR COMMUNITIES AND BENEFIT THEIR PEOPLE. BPF= BLACK PEOPLE FIRST!!

The Spendwith App is available for free download in the iTunes and Google Play stores. For further information about Spendwith, or for investment inquiries visit: https://spendwith.in
About Spendwith:

They curate, organize and categorize these posts into a shoppable format with the help of the crowd.

(I APPLAUD BROTHER SULAIMAN FOR ALL HE HAS DONE AND ALL HE IS LOOKING TO DO IN THE FUTURE – BUT I THINK THE FOCUS ON BUY BLACK MUST BE A SOLO ACT THAT PUTS BLACK PEOPLE FIRST - BPF!!!  – WE'VE TAKEN THE BACK SEAT OR HAVE BEEN LUMPED IN WITH SO MANY OTHERS FOR FAR TOO LONG.)

JUST SO YOU KNOW, iBUYBLACK, PHILADELPHIA IS ALSO CONSIDERING AN iBUYBLACK DISCOUNT CARD APP.  FOUNDED A YEAR AGO IN PHILADELPHIA TO HELP BLACK BUSINESSES EXPAND AND KEEP THE DOLLARS IN THE COMMUNITY, THE ORGANIZATION HAS SUCCESSFULLY RECRUITED 360 LOCALLY OWNED AND RUN BLACK BUSINESSES THROUGHOUT THE CITY, AND IS LOOKING FORWARD TO EXPANDING TO MORE BUSINESSES AS MORE CONSUMERS SUBSCRIBE TO THE CARD.  FOR $10.00 THE CUSTOMER GETS A DISCOUNT CARD THAT GIVES THEM A 10% DISCOUNT AT PARTICIPATING BUSINESSES AND SERVICES THROUGHOUT THE CITY AND SURROUNDING AREAS. We Are Coming to You!

THE WONDERFUL THING ABOUT THIS OVERALL IS THAT THERE ARE SO MANY BLACK BROTHERS AND SISTERS EMERGING NOW WHO ARE SEEKING TO DO INNOVATIVE AND EMPOWERING THINGS TO HELP BLACK PEOPLE - THERE IS SO MUCH ROOM FOR GROWTH AND IMPROVEMENT, AND WE'RE ON THE LATE SHOW IN SO MANY AREAS, IT WILL BE A LONG TIME BEFORE THE MARKET OR OPPORTUNTIES ARE SATURATED.

IF WE WORK IT RIGHT WE MIGHT JUST HAVE OUR OWN WAKANDA IN OUR LIFETIME.
