Wake Up Philly - They're destroying SEPTA! Whatcha Gonna Do About it?

Hello All!

 

I have to admit that I'm gobsmacked!

I can't believe that Philadelphians, and those of the other surrounding communities, are just gonna stand around, with their toe in the sand, with a woe is me look on their face, and allow The SEPTA BOARD to get away with defunding the most essential - and, up until recently - one of the best well run, transit systems in the US, by passing a dicey FY26 blood sucking budget.

You gotta be kidding me!  How do they get to take a break when they haven't completed their responsibility in taking care of the business and welfare of those they were elected to serve.

 

 

I'm even more surprised to learn that a deficit of $213 Million stands between SEPTA's being operational or set aside to gather cobwebs.  Though I don't have that amount in my back pocket, I'll bet there are probably some Philadelphians who do!! PHILLY IS THE CITY OF QUIET MILLIONAIRES.   I get it that there are some managerial structural issues that must be addressed, but there are also options to NEGOTIATE NON-PREDATORY, stop-gap loans with  them and/or some of the major corporations that are headquartered here while the legislators are making other arrangements.  

A 45% CUT IS NOT THE SOLUTION!  We know that these are some specious times - but attrition is not the answer!

Eliminating 38 bus routes, and no longer providing transit services to neighboring communities and towns is not the answer, and shows a lack of insight.  You can't build revenue when there is no service.  You need them to keep running while you begin finding private - non-predatory - interim funding sources. While the counties might not be allowed to tax their constituents to maintain the service, why not set up community, state and local investment programs to help underwrite SEPTA?

The SEPTA Board taking off with this problem still looming makes it appear that they don't care about the massive harm that is soon to be visited upon their constituents with the diminution of service. Lack of creative approach to a problem that will clearly bring widespread harm, is to be considered a dereliction of duty.   

Not providing the necessary funds to expand and maintain SEPTA for all in the South Eastern Pennsylvania region - which includes Philadelphia, Delaware and Montgomery counties, as well as Trenton, Delaware, and other surrounding areas is criminal! 

Each and every Pennsylvanian - regardless of your political affiliation - and EVERY PHILADELAPHIAN - should be camping out on the front porch of every one of these board members and your reps and not allowing them to move or enjoy their unearned vacation  until SEPTA is fully funded.  

NO VACATION FOR THEM UNTIL THEY TAKE CARE OF US.  They have cars, personal drivers, and are not directly affected by this shut down.  Not a luxury many of us have access to.

Just like Philly took to the streets to demonstrate against the predator in chief's demented draconian behavior, you must accord them same treatment.  This sheeple behavior is not the Philly I know.  I'm accustomed to people who are straight on when it comes to demanding and standing for their rights. 

The media is going around asking insipid questions of people who are standing at bus stops waiting fcor service - and folks are falling for the pity poor me scenario.  What needs to be heard is that there is grass root leadership activating protests until this is rectified and the service is expanded.  And goodness I truly hope so!

Philadelphia is the 6th largest city in the US.  It rocks back and forth between cast as one of the poorest and one of the the rising stars.  Without a viable transit system they are being fast tracked to poverty and decay.  And remember - 2026 IS THE 250th Anniversary of Philadelphia! Limping into that historical  period of celebration when we'll be rendered less well off than our founding Fathers in unconscionable!!

So now I say again:   WTF PHILLY! WATCHA GONNA DO ABOUT THIS?

In addition to SEPTA'S Board, we have stated, local and federal representatives!! YOU ELECTED THEM  TO LOOK OUT FOR YOU - Dems and Repuglycons!  When they don't, you've got to stand for yourselves.  You neeed to flood the local offices of your State, City and Federal reps;  as well as SEPTA's Headquarters - and demand they do their job - come up with a better plan to save SEPTA - immediately, if not sooner.

We appear to have allowed our attention on the ridiculous actions of the predator in chief in DC to divert us from what's happening here and now in real time.  We've given them the proverbial "inch" by making the announcement to downsize SEPTA as though it's okay, and there are no other options.  We have to now stop this at the pass!

While it appears SEPTA may suffering from the same kind of incompetent representation we are dealing with in DC, I'm hoping that's not the case - and that we've enough of a sense of self preservation to not let it slip by!   

This is our wake up call - we are responsible for making sure we don't get thrown under the bus either by Harrisburg or DC, our own inactivity!

It's time to stop whining on the TV news and start demanding they do their job.  

So let's send a message to the SEPTA Board members, and to those we have elected  - Our needs will not be neglected!!  MAYBE WE START A PETITION TO MAKE SURE THEY KNOW WE'RE ALL CONNECTED!  BECAUSE THE SITUATION WITH SEPTA MUST BE CORRECTED!

Watch out Philly! SEPTA Needs Your Help! MAGA BUDGET CUTS THREATEN OUR RAPID TRANSIT SERVICE - STOP IT!!!

Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority

Well, we are actually heading towards May of 2025 at break neck speed- we got through Easter and Hitler's Birthday - April 20; we made it through the Oklahoma Ruin and Earth Day - April 22 - and, despite the sickening, ignominious headlines, and the legions of podcasts that say the same thing - ad infinitum - about the predator in chief's latest assault on America, somehow we've managed to get through our day to day affairs somewhat intact.  

Then, some lunatic tried to assassinate Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro by throwing molotov cocktails into his mansion (theoretically because of religious differences - I will stick with lunatic)!  Governor Shapiro is one of my personal heroes and I took the whole thing personally - as did most of Pennsylvania.  What the sam hill is going on here??   The poison from DC is wafting its way up north and polluting our environment.  It has to stop - or, rather, it has to be stopped. 

That said, I was recently regaled with an unexpected and unnecessary challenge - that of the possible dismantling of the South Eastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority:  SEPTA!  Just when I was smugly bragging on the wonderful things that were happening in Philly, I was blindsided with this big of negativity!!!

Philadelphia has begun to make progress due to the many ambitious, and laudable, projects enunciated by Mayor Cherelle Parker less than a scant month ago.  She detailed all the wonderful measures that she was implementing to enhance the city!   I'm sure she was not aware that there was dirty work afoot behind the scenes:   Apparently SEPTA's General Manager has decided to step down from her post; and at the same time,  the State of Pennsylvania is sitting on essential funds needed to keep the system immaculate and running right.  

They were either unaware of, or did not care about what was getting ready to befall the nearly 3 million passengers who rely on SEPTA to get to their destinations - work, school, hospitals, shopping, local and regional travel.  And it seems the interim general manager had no compunction about pulling the rug - er, tracks - out from under them by shortening the schedules, rerouting buses and trains and leaving passengers stranded in the different stops SEPTA routinely services. 

Need to get to Treton?  Tough noogies; going to Delaware? Not from here? Have to get to the more than 290 stations that connects SEPTA to PHILLY and beyond?  Yes! 290 stations.  Not only that, SEPTA is the 6th largest US rapid transit system in the nation - with more 3 million riders on a daily basis, and 450 miles of tracks, and 2,350 buses an trains over 196 routes!  Regional Rail has 13 branches and 155 stations.  But it appears it doesn't matter to them.  It looks as though Philadelphia and SEPTA are being T-rumped (rhymes with punked)!!

The interesting thing about this is the fact that in July, 2024, SEPTA had enthusiastically announced they would be replacing the Market /Frankfort lines with 200 newly minted, sleek trains - the scheduled arrival was 2029 - four years away!  However, if there is a reduction of services in the interim, this will leave Philly a ghost town.  It may even cause an exodus similar the one Philly suffered from under the Reagan administration.  It would be awesome if the new trains could be fast tracked in time for Philadelphia's 250th Anniversary - but that's 2026. 

With the reduction in the number of services, in the face of the growing population of Philadelphia and surrounding areas, what the Sam Hill is the  problem with  Pennsylvania's state legislators.  Why are they sitting on SEPTA's budget, and putting the system on the brink on disaster and bankruptcy?  That's the kind of stuff repuglycons do - don't tell me that we are under the boot of the leviathan!  Don't tell me that we are dealing with a state legislative body that would rather see its constituents suffer than have what they need to function. 

Sounds to me like the good people of Philadelphia and surrounding areas should also be protesting against those in the State who are blocking  SEPTA's budget  and their means of transportation.   Their connections to other attenuating states which also brings funds into Pennsylvania will also be adversely affected - or completely eliminated.  

The pending new  SEPTA bus schedules appear to be aiming to relegate Philadelphia to the level of a backwater town, instead of a growing metropolitan city on the rise.  Who came up with the concept of curtailing bus schedules at 9:00 PM?  What's up with that?  Are the Quakers back?  Are Philly's sidewalks rolling up again?   Are Blue Laws being reinstated?   The route changes  leaving riders stranded and trying to find means to get home make no sense whatsoever. What dweeb is behind this madness? Clearly someone who obviously never uses SEPTA. 

I do wonder whether or not any of these changes were put before the actual riders.  I seriously doubt  it.  I remember they used to hold so called community meetings at 5:00PM right around the time most people would be just getting off from their jobs.  It was one of those "let's don't, but say we did" meetings, so they could pretend to have community input.  Had they given the riders the chance to be part of the meeting, or planning, I doubt seriously that they would have agreed to such egregious cuts to these essential services.   

Hey SEPTA!  if you want to do something, why not enhance the services instead?  Make SEPTA the envy of the Eastern Seaboard Rapid transit system - including NYCTA, MARTA, etc.,  like Washington, DC has done.  You know - lighted stops, Audio and LED enunciators of the next bus or train so people with disabilities can be alerted.  And, hey!  How about MONORAILS around the periphery of Philly and other areas to feature the beautiful waterfront and other sights that the city is famous for? This will not only enhance the service for the residents, but uptick the tourists who flock here by the millions to see the CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE AND SISTERLY AFFECTION?

As I mentioned before, it's time  Philadelphians paid a visit to Harrisburg!  And make a visit to SEPTA's Headquarters at 1234 Market Street to have a sit down with the ersatz SEPTA management and demand they restore and expand the services.

In fact,  SEPTA, while I'm writing this article, I might as well make some additional recommendations:

1) Make your trolley cars wheelchair accessible!

2) Provide LIVE CUSTOMER SERVICE PHONE SERVICE until 10:00 PM so people can get real time updated info - the apps are a joke.

3) Provide kiosks with led banners announcing when next bus is approaching

4) Bring back the bus stations for GREYHOUND, TRAILWAYS, BOLT, ETC to their original point or nearby (the 30ths street transit hub) in areas safe for passengers - not on the Schuylkyl parkway (I know this isn't SEPTA, but it's a hot mess now - you either have to go all the way to Delaware Ave., or risk your life on Schuylkyl Ave and Walnut).

5) Provide better training for bus operators, train operators and maintenance personnel

6) Host monthly community meetings for community input!

7) Be Creative and Provide  a SEPTA MONORAIL SERVICE that connects key areas in and around the periphery of Philly and Southeastern Pennsylvania to take advantage of the speed as well as the beautiful  vistas for local and tourist enjoyment. Guess what - takes 18 months to build them, low to no pollution, and no escavation or blocking of the roads. 

In summation: SEPTA IS AN ESSENTIAL SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF PHILADELPHIA AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES. AS THE 6TH LARGEST RAPID TRANSIT SERVICE IN THE US, IT WOULD BE FOOLISH TO UNDERCUT THE SERVICE, INSTEAD OF USING CREATIVE INGENUITY TO EXPAND AND ENHANCE IT.

Message to my Black People from Me:  

 

Philadelphia, by now you are well aware that PENNSYLVANIA is a "Battleground State."  What that means is that we are sitting on the fence, and can either do the right thing, or shoot ourselves in the foot by doing nothing, or doing the wrong thing.  We've  been in this society long enough to know the hell our people endured; and how many fought and died for us to have, be and do better.  

 

I've been told that Philadelphia is the "hole in the donut.  We are the power in the center of detractors.  We are in the eye of the storm.  It is up to us to deliver our votes unsullied by the hostility of the meanstream mediocre media menials, and T-rump liars.  They are trying to divide Black Men from Black Women; diseducate our children, spew lies about our brothers and sisters from Africa, Haiti, the Caribbean to keep us from consolidating our wisdom, power, knowledge, creativity, and economic wherewithal!  We have to make our presence and power known - not only through our voices, but THROUGH OUR VOTES - We know what happens when we sit on the sidelines and allow others to manipulate our lives.  We end up on the short end of the stick.  We end up as the losers.  

 

Tell the devil not today!! We are Victors - not Victims.  We not only have to show up for AREVA MARTIN'S SHOW,  but we must start now - if we haven't already done so - registering to vote, getting our mail in ballots, finding out where our polling places are - in case they've been relocated, and bringing at least 5 or more of our friends or relatives with us to vote.  

 

You can set up a mail in vote party and everyone fill out their ballots at the same time, and deliver them - IN PERSON (if possible) to the USPS.  If you have seniors in your family - or they're bedridden - help them register online for their mail in ballot - and help them get it in the mail.

 

Knowing that the repuglycons are trying to block your votes, and in many states, are secretly purging them, go online to I WILL VOTE and check to make sure you're still registered.  If your name is missing - make sure you re-register right now!  

 

For those of you who say they don't know enough about VP KAMALA HARRIS - check her information out on GOOGLE  or YOUTUBE!  WE ARE IN THE NEW AGE OF INFORMATION.  

 

While social media may have some issues that include mis-information and dis-information - we cannot use that as an excuse for not doing our own DUE DILIGENCE (i.e. DO YOUR HOMEWORK).  In much the same way you would when you want to get to a concert, find out about a new style, take your time to learn - and then SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE with your friends and family.  Please dont' watch Fox False News - or those like being spewed out by T-rump or his supporters.  

 

ALSO YOU MUST REALIZE THAT WE NOT ONLY NEED TO VOTE KAMALA HARRIS FOR OUR NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, BUT WE MUST ELECT - OR RE-ELECT - OUR CONGRESSMEN AND WOMEN to House of Representative, US Senators, Judges, Attorneys General - DEMOCRATS - Up and down the ballot - This is no time to split our ballot.  

We have seen what happens when we have a DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT, AND THE REST OF THE REPRESENTATIVES ARE REPUGLYCONS - IT MAKES IT MORE DIFFICULT TO GET THINGS DONE. WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE WE VOTE ACROSS THE BOARD AND EMPOWER OUR PRESIDENT TO GET THE JOB DONE!

ICYMI: PAUL ROBESON IS TCM's SEPTEMBER STAR OF THE MONTH!!

Hello All:

I totally confess that from childhood, I've had a life long fascination and crush on the great Paul Robeson.  Ever since I saw The Emperor Jones on the big screen in The East Side Theater, a Black owned movie theater in Oklahoma City.  My parents took us to see it and other Black movies when we were kids - us being my sister Brenda and me.  Even at that young age I totally appreciated the very handsome Black man with that amazing voice that reverberated through my skinny bone structure.  It was love at first sight - second only to my Daddy, Warner Hale Dulan. 

In school in Oklahoma City, we studied Paul Robeson; in our many Black history  school plays the guys imitated him, and we basically grew up listening to his many songs.  But, other than Showboat and God's Trombone, I had no idea of the amazing body of work he had done outside the limitations of a racist America.  I did not learn about this until I was grown, on my own, and watching latenight movies on WNET Channel 13 in NYC - where they did an amazing retrospective of Paul Robeson's movies - that was in the 70s. 

I also did not connect the dots when I was attending Lincoln University, that I was in the very city where he was born raised and resided.  Amazing!!! Of course at that stage of my life, I would have been much too shy to do anything about it.  But, just to think that I was visiting my best friend, Annie Gee, in West Philadelphia, and she lived right around the corner from him!!! Wow!!

I was totally blown away!  I had met his son Paul Jr., who was a nice guy, but nothing like his dad - and asked him about the movies his father had starred in.  He seemed to be totally surprised to find it out.

In 1976, while residing in California, I completed training in Broadcast Journalism, and got my FCC license.  I did my first broadcast, and sadly my first story was about the passing of the great Paul Robeson, who had fought a valiant fight against racism, restriction and the disenfranchisement of Black people.  His Passport and Visa had been confiscated because he stood up for Black people - at home and abroad.  Sadly Black people did not stand for him during his trial and tribulations.  I had always wished that he had done like WEB DuBois, and expatriated to Ghana when America decided they were going to turn on him (I wished the same for Bill Cosby - when they tried to lynch him with lies). 

The caucasoids tried to claim he was a communist - which he was not, and emphatically denied - because he spoke out against the racism in the United States perpetrated against Black people.

Paul Robeson was the epitome of a FINE BLACK MAN - who stood his ground, stood for Black people, did not back down, a quadruple threat: ACTIVIST, ACTOR, VOCALIST, SPEAKER, ICON, INTELLECT, i.e. THE FULL PACKAGE of everything caucasoid males are totally afraid of - those indeniable nascent qualities most Black men possess, that caucasoids have been trying to either beat into submission, or deprive us of ever since they set their rotten feet on AFRICAN SOIL  -

BTW:  Did I mention he was an ARIES?

With al the foregoing, I was so elated to find that TCM had selected him as their September Star of the Month - which started this past Sunday, September 5 with a kickoff salute to him, and two of his early movies BODY & SOUL,  and THE EMPEROR JONES.  Most of his movies were made in England - where he was the principle star of the movie - something he could never do in the US.  I hope you tune in and watch this wonderful brother at his finest - Black in the day.

But my big question is this: 

WHY HAVEN'T OUR BLACK TV CHANNELS DONE A TRIBUTE/RETROSPECTIVE ON THE GREAT PAUL ROBESON? BET, ASPIRE, TV ONE, Griot???

WHY HAVEN'T OUR PRODUCERS DONE A BIOPIC ON THE GREAT PAUL ROBESON? He definitely paved the way for so many of those who are enjoying freedom of creative expression today!  Spike, Tyler?

Why aren't we supporting the Paul Robeson Museum in Philadelphia,  PA???  They could certainly use our support.

WHY ISN'T THERE A PAUL ROBESON EXTRAORDINARY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD given to someone who has gone the extra distance?  Come on BET, NAACP, Urban League, etc??? 

Having him featured as Star of the Month on TCM is indeed a great honor for such a great man - but we should likewise be giving Paul Robeson his due for generations to come. 

It's really up to us, isn't it?

I am a lifelong fan of the great PAUL ROBESON - ever since I first heard his voice sing OLD MAN RIVER. 

It's too bad we couldn't clone this FINE BLACK MAN - there are a lot of sisters who would absolutely love to have a Fabulous Brother like him in her life - including yours truly. 

It's obvious the mainstream media and racist caucasoids have been successful in squelching the wonderful movies he's done that were so far ahead of the game that it would have caused street riots in the South to see this brother in all his glory and magnificence. 

I'm share a short list of his works with you.  The caucasoids try to say he was a communist - totally ignoring his other greater body of work in the Cinema and his stance for Black people and liberation. 

There are several other movies starred Paul Robeson where he was cast as the lead - THE HERO - unlike the many demeaning movies made about Black men and women - (Showboat springs to mind).

There are days when I just binge on his movies.

There is one movie  with Nina Mae McKinney where he is the king of his tribe - she plays his wife  - that is so absolutely fabulous - it is absolutely my favorite Paul Robeson movie.

I hope you can click on the links and watch them and enjoy this wonderful, powerful, FINE BLACK MAN - PAUL ROBESON.  Share them with your family - especially the ones who said they don't like black and white movies.  What they don't realize is that they were done in the early to mid-30s when technology was deemed out of reach of Black people - but we told the stories and made the movies anyway - and did a fabulous job.  At the same time Robeson was making movies for Black people, Spencer Williams and Oscar Michaeaux were doing the same as well.  Robeson had the distinction of being able to be on an equal or superior footing with whites, and telling them off with impunity - probably because his movies were made outside the USA.

I'm a little disappointed that Philadelphia Blacks did not stand up for him when his passport and travel rights were taken away to prevent him from having a larger platform to speak of the evils Black people were suffering in the US.  They also prevented him from singing locally.  He was there for us, but we did not reciprocate.
