GUEST ARTICLE AND APPEAL: STOP THE KAVANAUGH CONFIRMATION - MoveOn.Org

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

Hope all is well and that you're having an enjoyable summer - or what's left of it.  This summer has not been without incidents - and unfortunately some losses that have hit us at the core of our hearts - most recently the transitions of Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin and the Emperor of African music, Dr. Randy Weston.  We are still coping with our grief.

However, we cannot afford these occurrences, as painful as they were, to distract us from focusing on something that will be infinitely more painful and detrimental to us all - as Black people in particular, and as Americans as a whole.  As reprehensible as he is, 45 is now trying to replicate his incompetence and mendacity by having a minion from the Bushwacker era as a new injustice of the Subprime court.

And while we watch the train wreck that passes for a confirmation hearing, we cannot afford to sit idly by and let this happen.  WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES must make our feelings known!!! NOW

To that end, I'm re-posting an article from MoveOn - Please read it, act on it, share it - and take it to the next level.

STOP  KAVANAUGH NOW

STOP KAVANAUGH!!!

From: Ben Wikler

Dear MoveOn member,
This is Ben Wikler, MoveOn's Washington, D.C., director.

I'm writing from Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings, and the energy here is unprecedented.
The Democrats are bringing the fight. Now it's urgent that we turn up the heat outside—because when we fight, we win.
And now, The New York Times reports that, "As a White House lawyer in the Bush administration, Judge Brett Kavanaugh challenged the accuracy of deeming the Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision to be 'settled law of the land.'"1

This bombshell could change everything, but only if we ratchet up the pressure now. To win, we need two Republicans to vote no—the two who voted no on Trumpcare last year. Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine could be the key decisive vote in this fight, which is why are investing heavily in on the ground tactics in Maine right now. And we are also working around the clock to convince Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who voted no on Trumpcare, to vote no on Kavanaugh.
Will you chip in $3 to help turn up the pressure?
I've seen past Supreme Court confirmation hearings, and this is not how things usually go.
Republicans are racing through this confirmation, because they are scared the longer it lasts, the more likely they won't have the votes. They could well be bluffing when they say they have the votes already, especially as these new revelations come to light.

To stop Kavanaugh, we need to show Collins and Murkowski that this is no ordinary Supreme Court confirmation.
On the first day of Kavanaugh’s hearing, 70 brave protestors were arrested. Senate Democrats are livid about the 42,000 pages of documents that were dumped on the committee just hours before the hearings began and spoke out fiercely—energy that they've carried into their questioning of Kavanaugh through the second day.

On the second day, with allies, we organized an inspiring demonstration in Washington, D.C., where activist after activist vowed to fight this nomination to the end. And today, Democrats are putting damning new information into the public record—despite Republicans' insistence that documents remain "committee confidential."

We have to act with the same ferocity and determination of the brave protesters here in Washington.
And we have to act quickly.

Call your senators and tell them to stop Kava-nah!!!

We're hearing that Republican Senator Collins could make a decision this weekend. Just as on the Affordable Care Act, we need to convince her to do the right thing. Or to at least delay making a decision.

Every delay in this fight is a step closer to victory. The longer we have for the truth about Kavanaugh to come out, the more we can organize and the better our odds of success. That's how we won the fight to stop Trumpcare last year, and it's how we will win this fight. That's why I'm asking:
Brett Kavanaugh has refused to say whether President Trump can pardon himself or be subpoenaed, claiming that he's never thought about it and that these are "hypothetical questions"—despite the fact that Trump himself has claimed that he has the power to pardon himself while he's currently under investigation.2 He won't even discuss whom he has spoken with about the Mueller investigation.
He said the courts should strike down net neutrality.3 He refused to say he'd uphold Roe v. Wade.4
When the grieving father of a 14-year-old Parkland shooting victim tried to shake his hand, he turned his back on him.5

And now, news has broken that he doesn't believe that Roe v. Wade is settled law—even though he told Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski otherwise.6

In short, this hearing is not going well for Kavanaugh at all.

But we need to keep the pressure on—and that means making sure key senators of both parties understand that the public thinks this is a sham, partisan process, and that we want a court that will uphold our rights, not attack our communities. This is the case we're making around the country—and with a new surge of activity in Maine and other key states that could make the difference. And we must act quickly, BEFORE Senators Collins and Murkowski announce their positions, and it's too late to win.
Will you chip in $3?
buzzards of a feather flock together

MoveOn isn't just rallying. In the first 24 hours of Kavanaugh's hearings alone, MoveOn members made over 10,000 calls to the U.S. Senate.

To turn up the heat, MoveOn's Video Lab team is creating powerful ads with the voices of real people who would be hurt. Over the next several days, we're supporting actions in Alaska and Maine, where Senators Collins and Murkowski will cast two of the deciding votes on Kavanaugh's confirmation. We're looking at opportunities to buy ads in Maine's biggest newspaper. We're even working with Mainers who have voted for Collins in the past but feel a vote for Kavanaugh would be a betrayal—elevating their voices across the state.

The stakes in this fight are so high, but I have hope because of the Resistance energy I’m seeing here and the way it’s affecting the senators whose votes will decide the outcome. We won on Trumpcare, and we have a real chance of winning again.
Will you chip in $3 to help turn the pressure up even higher and stop Kavanaugh?
Thanks for all you do.

Guest Post: Move On Launches Save the Supreme Court

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

I had planned to do an Event Alert on the upcoming New York African Street Festival, which kicks off this week end and goes through July 4th; I was also going to brag on how wonderful and successful this year's JUNETEENTH PARADE was, and chastise those who let a little bit of rain stop them from coming out and being a part of history.

But NO!

I could not do that because so much has happened that we have to focus on immediately, if not sooner.

It appears that Subprime Court Justice Kennedy has suddenly decided it's time to retire.  Now, he could be sincere, or he could be paid, or coerced, in order to make it possible for the predator in chief to appoint another injustice to take his place.  Regardless of what his motivation is, it is up to us to make sure that there is a significant number of senators in office by the time the decision comes around to prevent that from happening.   And, if Tuesday's Primaries are any indication, we are well on the way to making that happen, and effecting a 180 degree turn around in this fall from grace we find ourselves in at the hands of T-rump and the repuglycons.

There are several organizations out there that are in the mode of making sure we stay energized and involved - one of which is MoveOn.  I am sharing a letter I received from them in reference to keeping the momentum on.  We have to coalesce with all the organizations that are out there trying to make T-rumps tenure as ersatz president as short as possible, and simultaneously trying to make the change from Red (neck) to Blue.

If the atrocities we are witnessing under this cretin aren't enough to convince you, just remember it can only get worse; and will definitely do so if he has the judiciary in his pocket. If you think it's terrible now - just wait until tomorrow.  And that's exactly what I'm asking you not to do - don't wait!  Don't watch another comedy show; don't post another FB or Instagram or Twitter about this before you take definitive action to seal the deal -we have to support, we have to register ourselves and others to vote, we have to resist, take stands, and we have to send this pariah packing - along with his odd assortment of miscreants.

Kudos to all those who were victorious in Tuesday's Primary - we have to keep the momentum up and the pressure on.   Regardless of where you are, or who you are, you must encourage and reach out to those in states and communities outside of our own to stand up, register, vote, resist.

While this letter was addressed to me, it's applicable to us all.

No one can save America but Americans.

Dear fellow MoveOn member,

History's darkest moments have often been marked by the creation of camps built to house "undesirables," and now, it's happening again—in our country, in our lifetime, and in full view of the world.

I believe that what this administration is doing at the border is a "crime against humanity," and it is on us to stop it. And I'm proud to stand with MoveOn, which is organizing a huge Day of Action—the biggest in its nearly 20-year history.

And now, MoveOn needs to pull that all off AND launch an emergency campaign to help save the Supreme Court from a full-on right-wing takeover in light of Justice Kennedy’s departure in the coming days and weeks.

For this weekend's event alone, MoveOn is going to need security, staging, signage, hundreds of volunteer marshals, Jumbotrons, top-level video technology, additional staff—and that's just in Washington, D.C. MoveOn is also pouring time, technology, and resources into promoting 600+ events across the country, recruiting tens of thousands of people to attend, training volunteers, and more. In total, Saturday's events are expected to cost $1.1 million.
I'm shattered by every image, audio clip, and horrific story coming from the camps—let's be honest, prisons—where immigrant children are being kept, and by the devastatingly callous response from the White House.

And the horrible fact is that, as you read this message, more than 2,000 families are still separated, Gloria. Yesterday we learned that contrary to Donald Trump's executive order, the administration will NOT be reuniting these children with their families until their parents drop their asylum cases and agree to be deported.1

That's right, this administration—from the party of family values—is now using children as hostages in an effort to punish their parents.

And they are laughing at us as we fight back. Earlier this week, during a speech at the White House, Jeff Sessions mocked activists like you and me and joked—to raucous applause—about separating parents from their children.2

I think we should show Mr. Sessions exactly who it is he's dealing with, don't you?
That's why this weekend, MoveOn members are gathering in cities across America to take part in more than 600 Families Belong Together events and march to demand that these families be reunited—immediately—and that children not be used as pawns in this administration's disgusting games.
And just so there's no confusion: Children and parents must not to be reunited, only to be then held in prison camps. Media attention has started to shift away from this critical issue, so continuing to shine a spotlight on this crisis is incredibly important, which is why I will continue to speak out, and why I hope that you will, too.
This is a frightening and devastating moment. But I'm still inspired. And I have hope. I'm inspired because I see hundreds of thousands of Americans taking action and proclaiming that families belong together.
I see footage of faith leaders, doctors, nurses, and folks who want to help heading to the border. I see business owners, cultural leaders, and civic organizations using their voices and platforms to resist and encourage others to do the same.

And I see communities across our country preparing to take to the streets in more than 600 cities this Saturday, June 30, to take part in Families Belong Together rallies, in what will be one of the largest days of action since the Women’s March in January, 2017.

I'm grateful to MoveOn members, because you—along with the National Domestic Workers Alliance and hundreds of other partners—are helping to create and support the 600+ events across the country, which will follow in the footsteps of the Women's March and March for Our Lives and support the flagship rally in Washington, D.C., where tens of thousands will gather within earshot of the White House

I know that this is an enormous undertaking—but it is an essential one. It's what's required in this monumental moral, historic, and political moment—which is why I have a simple request for you:
Thanks for all you do.

Ben & Jerry - More Than Just Great Ice Cream

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

I'm sharing this email with you because in 6 months we have a make or break date with fate - and we can either change the trajectory of this country or blow it forever.

Most of you only think of Ben & Jerry as purveyors of great ice cream, and have no doubt enjoyed their products over the past few decades.  But they are also activists and have been so for quite some time

The links below gives you a brief insight into some of their activities and beliefs:

https://www.benjerry.com/values/issues-we-care-about/democracy/dear-president-elect-trump

https://bthechange.com/activism-as-brand-identity-part-of-ben-jerrys-flavor-and-a-lesson-for-other-mission-driven-companies-cf7d61d0860e

I'm posting the letter I received below because they spoke on something that's been bothering me for quite some time - and in light of what's ahead of us, I'm starting now to try to keep before us the fact that this upcoming Mid-term election is as pivotal in recapturing the Democratic majority, as was the Mid-term of 2010 when we fumbled the ball and lost it by sitting on our votes and have been stuck on stupid ever since.  As I receive letters from various political entities and activists whose politics are correct and whose opinions I value, I will be sharing them  with you.

As with all letters from political activists, there is a financial solicitation - and you can choose to contribute, or not - as long as you remember that the reason the repuglycons have been able to prevail is because they have been able to buy elections, or subvert opinions via propaganda bought from bogus news broadcasts such as Faux (Fox) News, etc.  Our contributions, no matter how small, help these activists and candidates level the playing field.

Hi, fellow MoveOn member!
It's Ben and Jerry, the ice cream guys.

We're worried

We aren't experts on elections the way that MoveOn's team is, but we've been activists and MoveOn members for a long time. And it doesn't take a professional to know that Donald Trump is totally out of control and that Republicans in Congress are doing nothing to stop him.

Trump and his Republican buddies came within spitting distance of repealing Obamacare. They passed a $1 trillion tax cut for millionaires and billionaires—and Trump says that he wants to cut taxes AGAIN.1 The Environmental Protection Agency is currently headed by a man who is gutting every environmental protection that he can lay his corrupt hands on. And that's just the very tip of the iceberg.

If Democrats don't take away control of the House from Republicans this fall, Trump and his administration will continue to dismantle our democracy, the gap between the super rich and everyone else will continue to grow, and things are certain to get far worse—worse than we can even fathom right now.

There is good news, though: If MoveOn is able to run the massive elections program it has planned, Democrats have a good shot at taking back the House this fall and sending the Republican leadership packing. We've been awed over the years by the kind of organizing that MoveOn does, and we have great confidence in this program.

MoveOn's elections program is bold, inspiring, and genuinely grassroots-fueled. MoveOn's endorsing 100 progressive congressional candidates, developing new, cutting-edge methods of voter persuasion, and providing the training and tools to thousands of activists around the country who will lead and organize in the races that will determine who'll control Congress come November 7.

Will you chip in $5 a month and help MoveOn end Republican control of Congress in November, so that we can finally put some checks and balances on Trump? (You might even win a year's supply of free ice cream!)
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation, but I'd still like to enter the contest.
If the delicious possibility of free ice cream isn't enough to convince you to donate right now, then here are three more reasons:
  1. Polls say that the election is getting closer, and that the Democratic Party's edge is basically gone.2 It’s now, essentially, a coin flip. 50-50 odds. Or maybe worse. One recent poll put Democrats just one point ahead, and another puts them three points ahead. (And if either result holds, Republicans will win because of gerrymandering.)3,4
  2.  Republicans are copying MoveOn's elections model. This year, a GOP Super PAC funded by billionaires, called the Congressional Leadership Fund, is trying to copy MoveOn and is building a person-to-person field operation to go door to door to talk to millions of voters face to face. Its staff and volunteers have already knocked on more than 1 million doors.5
  3. The GOP is raising money at a record-breaking rate, while MoveOn's grassroots fundraising to combat the right isn't keeping up the pace. And we desperately need MoveOn's leadership in this fight: As we mentioned earlier, the polls are tightening, and MoveOn's amazing, strategic, innovative work is crucial to helping Democrats win this November. And MoveOn doesn't take money from corporate lobbyists—this work is fueled by all of us, by individual donors banding together to create real people power.
MoveOn's a key leader in the fight to make our future a better one. Will you chip in $5 a month to support MoveOn? If you do, we’ll sweeten the deal for you!
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation, but I'd still like to enter the contest.
Thanks for all you do.

SIGN THE PETITION - CITIZENS UNITED HAS TO GO!!!

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

This is the year we have to get it right regardless of who's in the majority - Repuglycons or Democrats - in the interest of making that happen, there are several key petitions that are being circulated that are pivotal to the overturn of egregious transgressions over the rights of US Citizens.  One of those is to overturn the CITIZENS UNITED law enacted by the "subprime court"   -  (they stopped being "supreme" a long time ago).

Please read and sign the petition - pass it on to your friends and relatives and associates - this is where WE THE PEOPLE can make our voices heard.

STAY BLESSED

On Sat, Jan 17, 2015 at 4:25 PM, Jay Henderson, Democracy for America <info@democracyforamerica.com> wrote:

Five years ago, our country suffered one of the most damaging blows ever dealt to our democracy, when the Supreme Court handed down the awful Citizens United decision.

Since this devastating decision came down, major corporations, the Koch brothers, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have poured untold millions into races up and down the ballot. As a result, the 2014 midterms turned out to be the most expensive election in history.

That's why Citizens United has got to go. And that's why, for the last 5 years, Democracy for America members across the country have been fighting back.

In 2012, DFA partnered with Senator Bernie Sanders to support a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. Nearly 85,000 DFA members added their name to that petition.

Now we're taking the fight directly to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce -- which has flooded politics with dark money in the aftermath of Citizens United -- and we need your help.

On Wednesday, January 21 -- the fifth anniversary of the Citizens United decision -- we're joining more than one hundred organizations from across the country to deliver 5 MILLION signatures to the Chamber's headquarters in Washington, DC.

Together with our allies, we will send a clear message that our democracy can't be bought and that those who try will be exposed and opposed.

Before Wednesday's historic petition delivery, will you help DFA reach 100,000 signatures in support of Sen. Bernie Sanders' constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United? Click here to add your name now.

At Democracy for America, we've made significant progress along with our allies in fighting the corruption of Citizens United:
  • In more than 600 cities and in 16 states, DFA members have helped lead several campaigns to go on the record against Citizens United -- like DFA activist Michelle Sutter's incredible work in California to pass the Overturn Citizens United Act.
  • We've helped successfully elect strong progressives, like Senators Al Franken and Tammy Baldwin, who -- along with 53 other Senators last year -- stood strong in favor of a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.
  • Because we need a Democrat in the White House to take back the Supreme Court and reverse Citizens United, with the support of 87.6% of DFA members, we joined with MoveOn to build a movement that can convince Elizabeth Warren to run for president. Today, DFA and MoveOn kicked off the Run Warren Run campaign in New Hampshire, days after opening up operations in Iowa.
With 80% of Americans opposing Citizens United, it's clear that people across the political spectrum are sick of money corrupting politics and want Citizens United to be reversed. On Wednesday, we'll take one big step toward realizing that vision.

Add your name in support of Senator Bernie Sanders' constitutional amendment to repeal Citizens United -- and help DFA reach the 100,000 mark before Wednesday's delivery!

Thank you for fighting back with us.

P.S. We've also got some late-breaking news! Sen. Bernie Sanders will join us on Wednesday at 8pm ET for a DFA Live conference call following Tuesday's State of the Union speech by President Obama. We'll discuss several issues -- including the fight to overturn Citizens United -- and Sen. Sanders will answer your questions live. Want to talk with Bernie?
