HARLEM WEEK 2012: For anybody who does not live on the planet earth, let met just tell you that New York City is the most exciting place to be right about now. We never do anything small. And that is patently clear when it comes to HARLEM WEEK. Now nearing its 40th year, I can remember when it started out as Harlem Day. Now our week is a little over a month. It was clear from that beginning that we had waaaaay much to celebrate to encompass it in a mere week. So, while we still call it Harlem Week, it really is Harlem month - and by extrapolation, Harlem Year.

Every year Lloyd Williams, the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, and the various community groups, along with an ever expanding group of sponsors, puts together an astounding tour de force so that the impact and importance of Harlem and its denizens in indelibly imprinted on the minds of the residents, participants, tourists, and onlookers.

So get out and get into the flow that is Harlem, and prepare to be amazed.

Harlem residents can experience these Amateur Nights at the Apollo on Wednesdays in August for half-price. You must present a valid photo ID and proof of residence when purchasing tickets at the Apollo Box Office. A limit of two half-price tickets per show.

Obama A Day: Message: In the interest of "AN OBAMA A DAY KEEPS THE MITT-TWITS AWAY" here's my contribution:
The next time you watch a Chevy commercial about how great they're progressing; at the point where Chevy starts talking about how great they're doing, say silently (or out loud) THANK YOU PRESIDENT OBAMA for not letting them shut down the entire automobile industry. The next time you're tooling down the turnpike and see the highway under construction, say THANK YOU PRESIDENT OBAMA for jobs and the funds to keep people employed.

That's it in a nutshell. Harlem Week is on and popping. If you missed the first part, you've still got time to make it up by making it to the rest of the events. While you're out there, stop by Sylvia's Queen of Soul Food Restaurant and give your condolences and pay your respect to the family for 50 years of continued excellent food and service to the Harlem Community.

(A Reprise of the Women’s History Month Commemoration) Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Bldg.,

Join mixed-media artist Wilhelmina Obatola Grant for an art talk and refreshments at the opening reception of visual art exhibition Clock Strikes Thirteen, an homage to 13 well-known Black women who lost their lives to breast cancer.
The exhibition features depictions of Fannie Lou Hamer, Hattie McDaniel, Audre Lorde, Minnie Riperton, Naomi Sims, Danitra Vance, June Jordan, Rosalind Cash, Syreeta Wright, Patricia Roberts Harris, Roxie Roker, Shirley Horn, and Alaina Reed Amini. Clock Strikes Thirteen celebrates these trailblazing Black female ancestors who have impacted society significantly, and who would have undoubtedly made even greater contributions if they had lived longer, healthier lives. Disturbingly, only four of these heroines lived past age 60.
