URGENT ISSUE: Support Letters Urgently Needed For the Set Top Box Being Opened to African American Independent Broadcasters and TV Productions

Hello All:

Hope this finds you well and in good health.

I'm writing to ask your support and assistance in composing a letter to Ms. Peggy Dodson, the founder and CEO of UBCTV (Urban  Broadcasting TV) who has been in the trenches trying to ensure that the FCC prevails in its efforts to open the Cable and Satellite TV Set Top Boxes to African American and minority independent broadcasting companies.  This will make it possible to have programming more representative and reflective of African American culture as readily available to the viewing public as are HBO, ShowTime, and other major outlets that currently dominate the scene.

Peggy will be meeting with the FCC tomorrow, July 7, 2016, in Washington. DC, where she all be giving testimony before a committee there.   The more support she can garner from those professionally involved in the media, the better.

However, it is of equally vital importance that she hear from those who are consumers as well - because this will affect and enhance what is currently being made available to a broad range of viewing audiences.  

Peggy Dodson is the founder and CEO of Urban Broadcasting TV Network - UBCTV - based in New York City.  She has already made quite an impact in her capacity to provide outletS to formerly overlooked local programs, events and issues; and will be able to link up with other Local Area Black Broadcasters to expand and enrich the vast landscape of television.

Interestingly enough, the FCC and President Obama, along with other Black producers are totally in favor of this option being made available.  However, the opponents appear to be coming from none other than the Congressional Black Caucus, and some misinformed activists.  This is not the place to cast aspersions on them, but to bolster her position.  

Time is of the essence.  The FCC hearing is tomorrow, Thursday, July 7, 2016.  Your voices need to be heard.  Please direct your letters and commentaries to:

EVENT ALERT: MINISTER FARRAKHAN IN PHILADELPHIA TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8

Well, with just a little more than a month left before the 20th Anniversary of the Million Man March in DC, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan will be attending a rally in Philadelphia, PA at the TINLEY TEMPLE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH (750 SO. BROAD ST.)

The doors will open at 5:00 PM, but it has not yet been ascertained what time the Minister will address the audience.

The Million Man March was originally held in DC on October 16, 1995, and actually attracted two million Black men (and the women who love them), in an epochmaking gathering that spread from the steps of the White House to the Lincoln Memorial.

It was a peaceful gathering, and a beautiful sight to behold.  As Farrakhan administered the pledge to the participants, it was a stirring moment etched in Black history.

Many of the Black men who participated went home and fulfilled their pledge to devote their energy to the upliftment of Black people - some ran for office, some opened businesses, some developed affordable homes, some started education and employment programs. 

But now, 20 years later, there appears to have been a deterioration of some of the efforts and energiesd the Minister sought to engender - but not necessarily as much on the part of Black men, as it has been an effort from the meanstream to undermine the good that had been started.  

The Subprime Court eviscerated the Voting Rights act, leaving Black people vulnerable to the jim crow laws of the past; the economic downturn of the mid-2000 - brought to you by the courtesy of former ersatz president George Bush and the Repuglycon party, literally destroyed Black home ownership, Black businesses, and Black investments - leaving families vulnerable to foreclosures and the biggest land grab since the Oklahoma Ruin (Run?) of 1889, when they stole millions of acres of lands from Indians and Black/Indian Families.  

The escalation of privatized prison facilities, and the railroading of young Black males into prisons for non-violent misdemeanor crimes on the part of handpicked paid off judges.  

And of course, the increased number of egregious, heinous, aggressive, fatal shootings of Black men and women by people who call themselves members of the law enforcement, but should have never had a badge or a gun under any circumstances - who probably would not pass a sanity test, and who have been allowed to walk free by "grunge" (nothing "grand" about them) juries - likewise paid and hand picked.

With aggression coming from all corners - especially via the meanstream media's broadbrushed negative depiction of Black men, and of course our own complicit self sabotage, we are in a precarious situation as a people.  

This reunion, and hopefully REUNIFICATION  - of Black men (and women) and the REDEDICATION to our families, neighborhoods, and communities, is absolutely essential.  PHILADELPHIA is 68% Black, and has the largest majority urban Black population in the Northeast - but acts like second class citizens, instead of a major power base.  

The education system is an insult; but no one seems to be able to figure out how  to change it.  The housing situation in many areas is deplorable.  There are adults who need as much remediation as their children need decent educations, but are allowed to continue to live in dysfunctional, semi-literate situations, similar to the way Black people lived in Philly in the 1890s when W.E.B. duBois did his epochmaking 500 in depth, sociological study entitled THE PHILADELPHIA NEGRO.

The Million Man March 20th Anniversary, which takes place October 10, 2015 in DC, is entitled JUSTICE - OR ELSE.  Some view it as a threat - however, it really serves notice on a lot of levels - not just to trigger happy policemen, but to Black people who need to take principled stands to save themselves and their own families from the inner disintegration of quality of life.

But, of course, the Brother Minister is far more articulate and erudite than I am.  You need to make it your business to be there on Tuesday, September 8; and even more importantly, October 10, 2015 in DC.

The admission to the Tinley Temple is free and open to the public.  There are other activities that you also might be interested in below.

Hello All:

Twenty years ago, in 1995, I had the distinct pleasure and honor to be one of the media to cover Minister Louis Farrakhan's MILLION MARCH in Washington, DC.  It was one of the most exhilirating  moments in my career to stand on that press podium and document this great moment in Black History.  

To witness 2+ million Black men in front of the White house to as far as the Washington Monument and  beyond; and additional millions who were watching and tuning in via TV, take the pledge administered by Brother/Minister Farrakhan has left an indelible imprint on my mind and heart as to what we, as a people, can do when we are galvanized and organized to consolidate our creativity, intelligence, energy, talents, skills, ability - and yes, our love - together.  We are truly an amazing people.

And when we don't - when we allow disparate forces and false info to invade our homes, schools, communities - we are indeed a pathetic, abysmal group of people.   

We are on the eve of the 20th Anniversary of the MILLION MAN MARCH.  Many of our brothers have kept faith with their pledge despite the odds and forces brought to bear against them.  There were many who returned to their homes and communities determined to make a critical, positive difference, and have done wonderful works.  They are to be applauded and emulated. 

There are those who started out with good intentions, but allowed challenges and enticements to pull them off the path.  

There there were those who, unfortunately, just paid lip service, wanted to be part of the crowd, but never really had any intention of fulfilling that pledge.  How sad for them.  

But to all of us - whether male or female - another monumental opportunity is looming on the horizon to take a stand and make a pledge, and to keep it for your and your people's sake and blessings.

On Octobe 10, 2015 - as Rev. T. D. Jakes says - "Get Ready! Get Ready! Get Ready!  The 20th Anniversary of the MILLION MAN MARCH is upon us.  Although Minister Farrakhan does not call it an Anniversary, per se - because he is taking it to the next level. 

The theme is "JUSTICE, OR ELSE!"  And it's appropriate, given the spate of heinous crimes perpetrated against Black people that have been either ignored, or sanctioned by the so called justice system.  It is blatently clear that in the 20 years since the March, the criminal justice system has become increasingly unjust.  The fact that even with hard evidence is provided via video tape, police officers are exonerated for their crimes, it's time for Black people and people from across the nation, to take a stand.  

Start mobilizing your neighborhoods, communities, cities now to participate!

EVENT ALERT: PHILADELPHIA BASED MOTHER'S IN CHARGE (MIC) TO HOLD ANTI-HOMICIDE RALLY IN DC JUNE 6

With the increasing rise in Black on Black crime, police brutality, and fratricide, Mother's in Charge, a Philadelphia based organization has called for mothers from all over the US to come together to press for legislation that would treat homocide as a public health crisis.  

Something definitely must be done when nearly 400 deaths have been because of police abuse of power alone.  The preponderance number of murders, however, are perpetrated by Black people against other Black people - whether in the home, family, school yard, gangs, streets, prisons, or other forms of aggression.  And while I think the rally is certainly laudable, and attention and action need to be taken to stem this rising statistic, the beginnings of all this in in the home.  

That said, perhaps the legislation that originally took the rights of mothers and fathers to raise their children to be good citizens out of the home; as well as took the rights of schools to exercise discipline in the schools, away from the teachers and administrators, need to be reinstated as well.  The fact that schools now have police and armed security guards to monitor the children, something that I never experienced when I was growing up, is evidence that this has not worked - that teachers have had their hands tied when it comes to managing their classrooms.  Parents and teachers  have been demonized for disciplining children.  But the system of discipline they used has been replaced with  armed police officers coming into the schools to arrest  children as young as 5 years old, traumatizing them and their classmates.

Parents have been rendered powerless to discipline their children, giving rise to rampant increases in the lack of respect and/or regard for the rights of others.  When 6 year old child gangs can run amok in a neighborhood, menacing peers and adults alike, and can't be "touched" - there's seriously something wrong with our parenting skills, individually and collectively.

That said, I applaud the organization's efforts to bring national attention to the problem - it's one leg of the need for a holistic approach to what it is that's undermining the growth, development and well being of our progeny.  Let's cut out the violent movies, TV shows and games - or at least put them in perspective so that they know that they're games, but are not meant to be part of real life or interaction with their peers.  Let's make sure they're receiving the nutrients that don't aggravate their moods, but enhance their growth and development.  And screen those peers who have yet to be raised in responsible homes with educated parents who are life oriented, spiritually conscious, and proudly Black. 

The press release below, that I received from IBW will give you detail as to when, where and how to become part of the rally.  If you have young or adolescent children, I urge you to participate - as well as to begin joining forces with organizations that are providing positive, proactive programs that engage the talents and creativity of your children at an early age; while helping them develop the social skills that will see their friends, relatives and associates as allies, not adversaries.

As the mother of three, grandmother of five, and surrogate grandmom to three, I know it isn't easy; but it is necessary.  No amount of rallying is going to take the place of the value system in the home being rigidly enforced - so that they grow up balanced and are in turn able to raise their own the same way.  I truly pray that this rally will have the success for which it is intended, but also that we, Black people of America, begin to truly redirect our own inner workings to step away from the meanstream and forge our own community ethos, as other groups have managed to do successfully.

PRESS RELEASE Standing For Peace And Justice Against Rampant Killings in Black Communities National Rally to Focus on Homicide as a “Major Public Health Crisis” Washington, DC, June 3, 2015….Black families across the country are being traumatized and whole neighborhoods are being destroyed by an epidemic of homicide that’s sweeping the nation and thousands plan to gather in Washington DC on Saturday, June 6 to demand that the country’s political leaders develop a public policy agenda that addresses homicide as a public health crisis. Led by Mothers in Charge (MIC), a grass roots Philadelphia-based organization with chapters in six states, families and community residents from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, New York and Washington DC are expected to gather at the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday morning to draw attention to homicide as a national tragedy. Two dozen organizations that are members of the Institute of the Black World’s (IBW) Black Family Summit, along with several other national organizations from around the country are supporting the MIC’s Washington rally under the banner of “Standing for Peace and Justice.” “Murder has claimed the lives of our loved ones, traumatized our families, and damaged our neighborhoods and communities for too long,” said Dorothy Johnson-Speight, executive director of Mothers in Charge, who lost her son to senseless violence a few years ago. “We call on all people of good will to stand with us to reduce the violence and heal our communities as we stand and speak for those who speak no more.” Leading up to Saturday’s national rally, the organizers have put out a “call to action” not only to the public policy makers but also to members of the business, health care, education, faith-based and non-profit sectors to increase awareness of homicide and violence and to expand research, programming and funding related to this epidemic. Recent studies indicate that homicide is the leading cause of death among African-American men ages 15-34 in the United States. Most of these cases are preventable. In the USA, the rate of unintentional death for children under the age of 18 is 10 times higher than the rate in other industrialized countries. The likelihood of a youth being murdered in the USA is 13 times higher than in other industrialized democracies. Homicide and gun violence have severely impacted both the mental health and physical safety of community residents, particularly in the inner cities of America. Exposure to violence has been linked to depression, to domestic abuse, to increased rates of aggression, to forms of anxiety disorders such as post-traumatic stress and to physical conditions such as asthma and obesity. “Our children are not innately more violent than children in other advanced countries,” says Dr. Ron Daniels, President of the Institute of the Black World (IBW). “The use of violence is a learned response. The presence and easy access to illegally-owned guns means that when our children and youth have disputes, rather than a fist fight, it has become a gun fight. Compared to other industrialized countries, the widespread presence of handguns accounts for these statistical differences in youth homicide, murder and injury.” To build momentum for the June 6 rally on the Mall organizers will convene a Congressional Forum slated for Friday, June 5th at the Rayburn Office Building (Basement B-18, 9am-Noon) to discuss strategies for policies and programs that address homicide as a public health crisis. Led by Cong. Danny Davis of Chicago and supported by Cong. John Conyers of Detroit, a panel of legal experts, advocates and persons who have been impacted by homicidal violence will focus on advancing legislation and expanding trauma and community-based services for victims of homicide. Organizers say that access to such services requires sustained commitment and coordination across diverse partners, sectors and stakeholders. Integral to prevention and reduction efforts is changing societal norms and values. The issue of homicide goes beyond an “urban problem” and encompasses US society’s tolerance for violence, for racial discrimination and for rampant inequalities in the areas of income, housing and education, all of which are contributing factors to gun violence which takes the lives of some 30 youth per day in the USA. “With our Call to Action we are emphasizing the need to act now to solve the major public health crisis of homicide,” said Johnson-Speight. “To reduce homicide and violence in our communities we need public policies that support our efforts on the ground.
