As
we get closer to Juneteenth - Saturday, June 19, 2021, the excitement
is mounting. There are so many activities and festivities planned this
year - doubling up on the fact that we were not able to be together in
2020, and aided by the fact that the US Senate just voted unanimously to
make Juneteenth a national holiday - the full ratification is awaiting a
vote from the house - SO NO ONE HAS A REASON TO NOT CELEBRATE, REJOICE
AND MAKE THE MOST OF THIS JOYOUS OCCASION!
Be there for the Juneteenth Festival in Malcolm X Park 5100 PINE STREET - PHILADELPHIA
As
many know, JUNETEENTH is already a holiday in Pennsylvania and
Philadelphia in particular and is widely celebrated from the beginning
of June up to the actual date of June 19th.
Philadelphia
kicked off Juneteenth 2021 on June 7th 2021 at City Hal, with speakers
and celebrities and political figures gathering to recognize the
importance of the day and it's meaning to Black people worldwide.

PHILADELPHIA
IS ONCE AGAIN PULLING OUT ALL THE STOPS TO CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH. And a
great deal of gratitude has to go to the JUNETEENTH FAMILY, under the
leadership of brother Kofi Asante, sister Tamara Staley, Starlene Bey,
and other dedicated members of the Philadelphia Juneteenth Family; as
well as Ron Brown who heads up Juneteenth Philadelphia - who
have
worked tirelessly to make this one of the most spectacular celebrations
ever! Come out and catch the spirit - bring your family, friends,
children and your soul.
In keeping with the good news, ICYMI:
The Senate has unanimously passed a bill to establishJuneteenthas
a federal holiday!!!
Juneteenth, which takes place annually on June 19, marks the true end of
slavery in the United States. It commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union
Army General Gordon Granger proclaimed freedom from slavery in the
state of Texas, nearly two years after the Emancipation
Proclamation. The holiday has been celebrated in 47 states and the
District of Columbia, but now, if passed through the Senate, will be
recognized on a national level.
Senate
Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., made the motion to pass the
legislation, and no other senator objected. Earlier on Tuesday, Sen. Ron
Johnson, R-Wis. — who blocked the bill from passing last year — dropped
his objection to the holiday.
"While it still seems strange that having taxpayers provide federal
employees paid time off is now required to celebrate the end of slavery,
it is clear that there is no appetite in Congress to further discuss
the matter," Johnson said in a press release. "Therefore,
I do not intend to object."
The bill now goes to the House. If it passes, Juneteenth will become the
11th federal holiday. Sen. John Cornyn and Rep. Sheila Jackson, both of
Texas, first proposed the bill last summer amid national protests over
themurder
of George Floyd, but it did not garner enough support.
Cornyn tweeted his response to the passing of the bill, writing: "Happy
that my bill to recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday just passed
in the Senate. It has been a state holiday in Texas for more than 40
years. Now more than ever, we need to learn from
our history and continue to form a more perfect union."
Senate unanimously passes bill to make Juneteenth a federal holiday - now let's get the FOR THE PEOPLE LEGISLATION PASSED

I
would be totally remiss and out of line if I didn't mention JUNETEENTH
in my home town of OKLAHOMA CITY. I grew up celebrating Juneteenth with
my family, friends, neighbors every year. It was a massive family
gathering with everyone bringing a dish and playing games. Of course
they've morphed into concerts, parades and other forms of celebration.
Yay! OKC!!

September fairly whizzed by - moving in and out like a locomotive - you hardly had time to catch your breath - there was one event after another - nonstop - And October is doing pretty much the same thing. We are literally 30 days from November 8 and counting. A lot to do and so little time - so we have to be on top of it to make sure we make it through victoriously!!
So, while our social calendar and activities are important - we've got some pressing matters that everyone should be aware of and a part of - we don't need anyone to drop the ball at this point. Way too crucial to ignore.
For that reason, I'm dividing my GDW EVENT ALERTS INTO THREE PARTS - there's just too much to encompass in cone publication - although in the past I've actually tried to do so.

We are excited to join the #BlackWomenVote campaign, a nonpartisan project by Higher Heights, this Thursday, October 6th from 7:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. EDT for a National Telephone Town Hall.
We invite you to join in on this important and timely conversation, as we gather thousands of Black women from across the country to discuss mobilizing our communities to vote this November.
October 6th would have been civil rights activist, Fannie Lou Hamer’s 99th Birthday. Fannie was an amazing woman that fought to ensure that we had a voice in the political process.
As we pause to celebrate her life and legacy, we will also discuss strategies to ensure that our voices, votes and leadership matter in this election and beyond.
To participate on the call, you MUST RSVP at http://bit.ly/bwvtownhall. You will receive a call on Thursday at 7:30 pm. EDT to the telephone number you included in your RSVP.
Many are questioning if we can activate Black women voters this election, turn them out to the polls and motivate them to organize their communities. The answer is yes!
I think you would agree that when you fire up a Black woman she does not go to the polls alone, she brings her house, her block, her church, her sorority and her water cooler. Join in and learn more on how to activate your network and our community in the #BlackWomenVote, a 30 day campaign to mobilize thousands of Black women to the polls.
If you need more information or have questions please contact Higher Heights at BWV@HigherHeightsforAmerica.org or reply to this email to reach National Action Network.

It's possible the entire presidential election could come down not just to one state, but one city.
The Los Angeles Times just called Philadelphia "the most important target for Hillary Clinton in what ranks now as her most important state."1
What's our best shot at stopping Trump and his campaign of hate? Making sure there's a big voter turnout in the City of Brotherly Love.
WFP activists are taking a bus trip from NYC to Philadelphia this Saturday, October 8th to knock on doors for Hillary Clinton in a state that's being called her "firewall" against Trump. Can you join us?
But watching the polls doesn't turn out voters. And right now, the one thing we can do to make sure we crush Trump's campaign of hate is to turn out as many voters as possible in swing states like Pennsylvania.
The bus will be departing Saturday morning from downtown Manhattan at 9:30am and returning before 7:30pm. Your seat on the bus is free, but space is limited. If you want to join us on the bus, please register now:

Are you around Thursday in Philadelphia? We would love for you to join us to help elect Hillary and other Democrats!
I know that this team has always stepped up when we needed you to -- and helped to knock on doors, make phone calls, and even register people to vote. But as Election Day gets closer, we need you more than ever.
The stakes are too high -- if we don’t do our part, Donald Trump will win. But every time you step up, Gloria, we get one step closer to making sure Hillary is our next president. That is why it’s so important that you join us on Thursday.
You have a chance to make a difference in this election. Can we count on you to help Hillary and Democrats win?
Join us on Thursday -- and let’s get to work:
Thanks,
Corey Dukes
