Guest Post: Charles Barkley’s Black History Month All Stars

By Gloria DULAN-Wilson

Charles Barkley’s Black History Month All Stars

All Star #21: Leon Sullivan

In 2016, Charles Barkley marked Black History Month with a daily spotlight on local African-American heroes. Many of them didn’t make it into the history books or even the newspapers of their time. But their stories are inspiring and worth knowing. Here’s another look.

20

Leon Sullivan  Civil Rights Leader

(October 16, 1922- April 24, 2001)

Rev. Leon Sullivan—the “LION OF ZION”—used his pulpit and his position as longtime pastor of North Philly’s Zion Baptist Church to organize for local African-American causes, particularly in employment.

From 1959 to 1963, he led area black preachers in organizing “selective patronage” boycotts of local companies—Tasty Baking, Sun Oil, Gulf—deemed to discriminate against African Americans in their hiring, urging black consumers with the slogan “Don’t buy where you don’t work.”

The movement opened up several thousand jobs to black workers and drew national attention, including that of Martin Luther King Jr, who adopted Sullivan’s techniques in his Operation Breadbasket.

In 1964, Sullivan opened the first Opportunity Industrial Center (OIC) - a job-service training program to teach manufacturing skills to Black Philadelphians. OIC still operates today, in 22 states and around the globe.

Sullivan led Zion for 40 years, growing it from 600 congregants to 6,000, and turning it into a community hub (the center still bears his name).

Throughout, he also spent time in South Africa helping to fight and dismantle apartheid and creating a set of rules—now dubbed the ‘Sullivan Principles’ —that serve as guidelines for American corporations doing business in South Africa.

He recalled in a 1999 interview a trip to South Africa that ended with him enduring a strip search at the airport.

“A man with the biggest .45 I’d ever seen said, ‘We do to you what we have to,’” Sullivan recalled to the New York Times. “I stood there in my underwear, thinking, ‘I’m the head of the largest Black church in Philadelphia and I’m on the board of directors of General Motors. When I get home, I’ll do to you what I have to.’”

VOLUNTEER FOR HILLARY CLINTON FOR PRESIDENT - CONGRESSWOMAN MARCIA FUDGE AT PHILLY'S CECIL B.MOORE HDQ. SUNDAY, AUGUST 28

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

For those of you who are politically astute, you know that every little bit helps. We are in a serious battle for the hearts, minds and votes of America - and, though it should be a no-brainer, we can't afford to leave things to chance.  This is no time for political fence sitters; or too busy to be bothered folks who assume things are going to turn out all right.

I just realized that 30 days ago, on July 23, I was at a kick off reception for the media for the DNC at Citizen's Bank Arena - there were thousands of members of the press - mainstream, meanstream, and Black, all together two days before the opening day, July 25, when more than 50 thousand Democrats descended on Philadelphia to nominate HILLARY CLINTON as their candidate for President of the United States.

The hoopla is over, and we're 30 days out - with 67 days and counting - what are you doing?  What have you been doing?  What do you plan to do to make sure HILLARY CLINTON is the next President of the United States, and not the megalomaniac with the orange face and the comb over hair style?

For those of you in Philadelphia, you can contact the local campaign headquarters in your area and sign up for some of the volunteer events that are being planned throughout the city, but for those of you who are outside this catchment area and want to find out what is going on in your community, I've tried to post the link that gets you into your state so you can determine where and when the best opportunity for being a part of the success is.  If I've done it right, you can click on your state, and pull up the information for your self.  If I haven't, the link to this entire piece is below.

Regardless of where you live, or your political affiliation, we all have to come together to prevent American from falling into the hands of fascism.

Someone once erroneously said that Hillary was the "lesser of two evils."  A very stupid statement, since HILLARY is neither "less" nor "evil."  She's actually the best,  most positive, most intelligent, and most progressive choice.  She is also an exciting choice because of all the things she brings to the Country over her years of having served relatively in the background - benefiting all whom she has come in contact - mostly without fanfare, and now to implement proven programs for the nation - I find that most exciting indeed.

So roll up your sleeves; bring your collective creativity and energy together - there's a lot do do here - not just for HILLARY, but for all those who are running on the Democratic line in your city, state, community - we have to think national, but also vote local - and if anybody dares uses the word "backlash" in reference to this - make sure you let them know that the Backlash is on the other foot - and that we plan to replace each and every repuglycon who ever held any kind of seat in any kind of position - from dog catcher, to mayor, to governor, to Congressional rep, to senate - we''re taking ot the trash, applying the toilet paper and the lysol, and cleaning out the mold.
