Hello All!!
Happy BLACK HISTORY MONTH!
96
years ago Dr. Carter G. Woodson started NEGRO HISTORY WEEK in
celebration of the accomplishments of Black people in the midst of a
world that largely discounted us as viable people. Before it morphed
into BLACK HISTORY MONTH, it was always the second week in February - to
incorporate and celebrate two of his personal heroes - President
Abraham Lincoln and the great orator and activist, Fredrick Douglass -
born on February 12 and 14 respectively. I can't emphesize enough that
Woodson selected those dates - so when you hear ignorant jokes about
BLACK HISTORY MONTH being set in the shortest and coldest month of the
year, you can put the ignoramuses straight.
Prior
to starting Negro History Week, Woodson authored several books on Black
history, and launched the Journal of Negro History which brought him
and together with several other scholars to highlight the achievements
of Black Americans.
He
founded he Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ANSLH)
in 1915. Believing that African Americans were not being taught enough
of their own heritage - he intensified his studies and research, and
opened a center at his home on 9th Street in Washington D.C.
One
of his most famous publications, THE MIS EDUCATION OF THE NEGRO (1933)
is as true today as it was when he wrote it nearly 90 years ago - and
sadly, has yet to be fully implemented by most Black educators or
institutions. 100 years ago, in 1922, he wrote THE NEGRO IN OUR
HISTORY.
Though
he tried to expand the celebration of Black history beyond one week, he
was never able to complete the transition - having succumbed to a
sudden heart attack in 1950 at the age of 75. 26 years later, under new
leadership, the shift was finally made to a monthlong celebration.
Dr.
Woodson was a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, which supported
him in the early days of developing his research institution, and
helped fund the publications of his books.
Today
in 2022, with the agressive racist attempts to suppress Black history
in schools and other institutions, it is more imperative than ever that
people become acquainted with Dr. Carter G. Woodson, and programs
developed to re-educate ourselves and our youth with our history. If it
can't be done in regular schools, then formulation of Saturday schools
and Church Auxillary History programs should be developed so that our
history and contributions, as well as the history of our endurance and
resilience under an oppressive government will not be overlooked,
discounted or lost. We are in the midst of a battle for our souls,
freedom and very existence, with racist caucasoids trying to deny our
right to vote, the history of our people, and educational and economic
parity. Thus far our response has been scattered and vapid.
Over
100 years ago without radio, television, computers, or cell phones, Dr.
Woodson managed to reach and teach Black people around the world they
mattered, they had made major contributions, and that they were
victorious! How could we, in the day and age of the most modern
technology do less? -GDW
That
said, Dr. Efaye Williams has made it her mission to celebrate Black
History every day - and provide opportunity for as many contemporary
Black people who contribute to our society to be heard via her radio
show, WAKE UP AND STAY WOKE - so every Wednesday at 10:00AM on WPFW.FM
89.3, she interacts with people who are making great contributions. So
mark your calendars, set your alarms and tune to see who her next guests
will be. You can tune in on your radio, or log on to www.wpfwfm.org -
There are also opportunities for calling in to ask the guests questions
