EVENT ALERTS: APRIL IS FULL - CAN YOU KEEP UP?

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

Now that we've gotten over the March Madness, and the spate of April Fool Jokes from last Friday, we're deep into the second week of April already, and there's a lot going on - so let's see what's up!

[How many of you did a leap for joy temporarily when they said that T-rump was withdrawing from the race - and that Chris Christie had resigned as governor of New Jersey??  Yeah, I fell for it too - oh well - April Fool! LOL]

Now you know this is not an exhaustive list - just some of the events that I feel are significant, and that you might want to partake of - NYC and Philly have so many dynamic events going on until it would take cloning yourself in order to make even half of these events- and of course you don't want to dabble, you want to spend quality time. So enjoy!!!!

PHILADELPHIA:

FRIDAY, APRIL 8, 2016/2:00PM:  The great Dr. Charles Blockson, the foremost expert in Black History, and  Paxton K. Baker will speak at Temple University's Sullivan Center, 1330 Pollett Walk, at 2:00 PM.  Dr. Blockson has, to day, over 200,000 personally collected African and African American memorabilia, documents and artifacts - which are now on display at Temple University's Blockson Collection.
Event at Temple University- A Conversation with Charles L. Blockson and Paxton K. Baker” being held on Friday April 8th at 2:00 PM. I’ve been informed that Dr. Blockson was the guest speaker at the Fifteenth Anniversary Celebration of the Echoes of Africa Event in August 2015 and that his many years of research and work have been priceless for the African-American, African, and Caribbean communities.

THE GREAT DR. CHARLES BLOCKSON: Historian/Activist/Speaker:FINE BLACK MAN
Now, if you want to see someone who truly loves Black people and what we've accomplished, you have to check out Dr. Blockson - now in his mid-80s, he is just as fiery now as when he first began is collections nearly 70 years ago.  I am ever amazed at his energy and enthusiasm, and is ardent concern that we as a people do not go the rest of our lives ignorant of our history and accomplishments.  I will be sitting front and center.  I just love Dr. Blockson - he's of the genre and generation of John Henrik Clarke and Dr. Ben Jochannan.

SATURDAY, APRIL 9, 2016: MKA INSTITUTE, Molefi Kete Asante Institute for Afrocentric Studies 5535 Germantown Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19144
Dr. Daryl Taiwo Harris - “The National Political Election: Where Shall Black People Go?"  Daryl Taiwo Harris is an associate professor and former chair of political science at Howard University. He was the recipient of a 2014-2015 Fulbright Distinguished Research Award. The scholarly focus of his teaching and research is the philosophical underpinnings of Black political phenomena. His work combines methods of Africological and political analyses with the goal of advancing Afrocentric understandings of the world. In exploring the nuances, interstices, and subtleties of previous critical works, Harris has found that the opening for innovation in the way we assess racial and cultural conflicts remains wide open. Harris has taught Black Politics and political theory courses, first at the University of Connecticut and then at Howard University, his current institutional affiliation since 2003.

The 2016 political election cycle portends to be one of the more interesting ones in recent memory.  This is mainly because of what is transpiring among the Republican contenders seeking the nomination.  It is also interesting because the Democratic party seems poised to nominate Hillary Clinton as its standard bearer, who may very well be elected as the first woman president.  Through it all, however, what has yet to be adequately considered is Black public policy interests.  This presentation, therefore, endeavors to gauge the style and substance of Black agency, and what contributes (or hinders) to actualizing Black interests.  In so doing, a range of election strategies will be critically examined to determine the implications each has on Black political expression.

SIDNEY POITIER RETROSPECTIVE APRIL 9 - 17 in ASTORIA, QUEENS, NY
SIDNEY POITIER, HOLLYWOOD'S FIRST BLACK LEADING MAN, TO RECEIVE NINE-FILM RETROSPECTIVE

Actor, director, activist, and humanitarian, Sidney Poitier was a pioneer on many fronts: He has been called Hollywood's first black leading man, and was the first African-American actor to win an Academy Award, in 1963. Poitier emerged as an iconic movie star during the dawn of the civil rights struggle, and during a time when there were few opportunities for black actors or directors in Hollywood. He projected a sense of dignity, moral strength, and determination balanced with cool poise. From April 9 through 17, 2016, Museum of the Moving Image will present a nine-film retrospective of Sidney Poitier.

The series, Sidney Poitier, is organized by guest curator Mia Mask, Associate Professor of Film at Vassar College, and the co-editor with Ian Gregory Stachan of the new book Poitier Revisited: Reconsidering a Black Icon in the Obama Age (2015, Bloomsbury). Informed by the essays in the book, the film series invites viewers to take a fresh look at Poitier's career, which is varied and complex, and includes significant work as a director as well as an actor.

Mask will introduce No Way Out, which marked Poitier's feature film debut in 1950, and Buck and the Preacher, his directorial debut, both screening on the opening day of the retrospective (April 9). The series also includes Edge of the City and Paris Blues, both directed by Martin Ritt; The Defiant Ones, in with Poitier co-stars with Tony Curtis as escaped convicts bound together; the Southern crime story/police procedural In the Heat of the Night; the Broadway hit play by Lorraine Hansberry adapted for the screen, A Raisin in the Sun; and two comedies in the 1970s he directed, Uptown Saturday Night and Let's Do It Again, which starred a who's who of African-American comic actors. Most films will be presented in 35mm. The complete schedule and descriptions can be found HERE
