GDW Event Alert: Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Rainbow PUSH Wall Street Project ECONOMIC SUMMIT--March 21-22

By Gloria DULAN-Wilson
Hello All!

Can you believe it!!!??? It's been 25 years since Brother Rev. Jesse L. Jackson launched his epochmaking Wall Street Project.  I almost remember the exact day he made the announcement from the prestigious offices of Mitchell-Titus LLP Accounting on Wall Street.  That was in 1996, telling the news media, the world, and more importantly, Black people, that he was going to finally focus on the disparity in wealth and access Black people faced in a caucasoid environment.  Rev. Jackson had long held the concept that integration and holding political office were necessary, but not sufficient for Black people to become autonomous and independent in a racist society.  To achieve economic parity, one must understand the economic forces that are brought to bear - especially in a society that gained most of it's wealth from the very backs of our ancestors.  More than reparations - which may or may not come in our lifetime - is understanding, participating in, and controlling the forces of capitalism as it applies to us individually and collectively.

                                                                  Rev. Jesse L. Jackson

I was there at the announcement; I was there at the kick off which was held on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, and in some very cramped areas of the World Trade Center - they tried so hard to make us as uncomfortable as they possibily could, thinking that would discourage us.  I remember the early workshops that were held at Trinity Church, and other bastions of caucasoid largesse - and the walking tour Jesse took us on through Broad Street to show us where our monies were managed.

Throughout the 25 years I've covered the Rainbow PUSH Wall Street Project ECONOMIC SUMMIT, I have been blown away by the wealth of knowledge that has been presented to us!  I've written about it, and encouraged many of our rank and file brothers and sisters to come, observe, learn and apply their new knowledge to their own lives.  I have marveled at the fact that the Rev. Jesse Jackson is a true genius - often underrated by many of his own people, but highly regarded by those in the realm of finance and empire building.

Until the bombing of the World Trade Center, the Summit was held on Wall Street - and then relocated to midtown Manhattan's Sheraton, where it's been held continuously ever since.  Covid=19/Delta/Omicron kept it virtual after that - and this year in 2022, there is to be a hybrid of in person and via Zoom conferences.  And it couldn't come at a more opportune time - with so many forces and sources driving the economic train off the rails at the present time, it will be interesting to see what the predictions are for the future of Black economic development.

If you haven't already done so, register for the upcoming ECONOMIC SUMMIT the information and schedules are  below.

REV. JESSE JACKSON, SR: GUEST COMMENTARY on T-RUMP AND CHAOS & EVENT ALERT on UPCOMING 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF WALL STREET PROJECT

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson
-->

Hello All:

As promised, periodically I will be posting articles relevant to the ECLECTICALLY BLACK COMMUNITY.

This is the 20th anniversary of Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Push Wall Street Project.  Additionally, Rev. Jackson has spent over 50 years of  his adult life as an activist dedicated to the self-liberation of Black people.  As I have reiterated, he is one of my personal heroes.   We find ourselves, as Black people, facing perilous times - as the result of following propagandistic media hype that passed as news, we lost a stellar opportunity to elect a presidential candidate that would have continued to expand programs and policies that would have enhanced our quality of life.

We now, instead, have a megalomaniac in office - who has no compunction about jeopardizing the lives, health, welfare and sanity of this country.  It has a direct impact on us and cannot be taken lightly.   I have  made it known that I would not give T-Rump free publicity.  The only time his name is mentioned is in the context of what it is e need to know or be doing for our own information and empowerment.  Too much time was spent on giving him free publicity by writing up all the "shocking" things he said or did - all part of  his hype.  This served to work in his favor and against us.

Voices like Rev. Jackson and others who tried to give us a head's up were largely overridden by sensationalistic headlines,  who dominated the media without posting the real truth - information cogent to what the consequences would be if he was able to carry out his "promises," were squelched by editors bent on selling papers as opposed to informing or warning their readership.

Hindsight is always 20-20, isn't it?  We are not in reactionary mode - which is just where T-rump wants us to be.  Reacting to everything he says or does.  And, while we are doing that, keeping everyone off balance, protesting, an freaking out, we are much too off balance to fully deal with what must be done going forward to prevent him from taking our country down the toilet.

Whenever possible, I will be posting guest articles that are proactive about the T-rump administration.  There is no ONE way to stop this onslaught - but there is ONE thing that we all should realize by now and that it is that it will take the concerted efforts of all of us to resist and reverse the madness and chaos we find ourselves confronted with today.

This is Rev. Jackson's Commentary, followed by the information and link to registering for his upcoming 20th Anniversary RainbowPUSH Wall Street Project which takes place in New York City, February 15-17.

Stay Blessed

Gloria

Trump shows he revels in dangerous chaos
BY JESSE JACKSON
January 31, 2017

President Donald Trump’s most recent provocation — suddenly issuing an order banning the admission into the United States of refugees and immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries — created chaos and fury that had to be expected.

Airports across the world were engulfed with demonstrators. Judges issued emergency orders staying enforcement of parts of the order. Families found their children studying abroad unable to return home, or their loved ones attending a funeral stranded in an airport. Translators who had risked their lives for American soldiers in Iraq suddenly found their green cards useless and their lives at great risk. Both intelligence professionals and State Department diplomats have protested the order.

Trump clearly revels in this chaos. He proves to his voters that he’ll fulfill his campaign promises, despite opposition. He shows them that he’s getting things done. He postures strong on securing Americans against foreign terrorists. He defines his opponents as bleeding heart liberals, more concerned about rights than security, more internationalist than nationalist. He views this all as a win.

Trump’s act is based on a lie: that America is not careful in vetting those refugees from battle zones that seek refuge in our country from violence or persecution. In fact, our vetting is already among the most stringent in the world. Trump told the Christian Broadcasting Network that Christians would be given preference over other religious groups, asserting falsely that under Obama, “If you were a Muslim you could come in, but if you were a Christian, it was almost impossible.” In fact, last year we admitted virtually as many Christian refugees as Muslims, despite the fact that far more Muslims are at risk and seeking refuge. But this president has shown that he’s prepared to act on the basis of “alternative facts” when he so chooses.

The real problem is that the unintended consequences are likely to be far more dangerous than doing nothing. For ISIS and al-Qaida, the order is gift. It feeds their argument that the Muslim world is facing a war on Islam led by the Great Satan (the U.S.) intent on persecuting Muslims.

The anger and hatred generated will make it more difficult for moderate Muslim leaders to cooperate with the U.S. At home, a Muslim community under siege — and faced with rising hate crimes — is likely to become more closed, not less, and less cooperative, not more. If we will not respect their rights and security, they will be less likely to be concerned for ours.

Across the world, the order reveals an America that is frightened, not strong, and insular, not expansive. Trump has just mocked his own argument that our allies should bear a fair share of the defense burden, for he’s made it clear the U.S. will not do its part in offering refuge to the displaced — many of them driven from their homes by wars that we started or continue. And America’s claim to be a champion of human rights has just been weakened by our own actions once more.

The irony here is that Trump gets the threat wrong. Seven countries were singled out for special prohibition — a ban on all travelers, not just refugees for 90 days, visa or no visa. Not one person from those countries has killed any Americans in a terrorist attack inside the U.S. The perpetrators of American terrorist attacks in Boston, San Bernardino, Calif., Fort Hood in Texas, and Orlando, Fla. — did not come from the countries banned, and all were radicalized homegrown individuals.

Similarly, the hijackers of 9/11 did not come from the countries that are banned. They came from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Lebanon, none of which are on the list.
There must be some other reason than terrorist threat for the selection. It may not simply be coincidental that the countries listed for bans are those where Trump’s company does no business, while the nations from which the 9/11 attackers came — and yet are exempted — are places where Trump has done or tried to do business.

Democrats have said they would try to get the order rescinded for its trampling of human rights, its lack of preparation and confused definitions. The real question is whether Republicans embrace this action or make their opposition known. Trump is happy to mock Democrats. His aides know that he has to learn to work with Republicans who control majorities in both houses of Congress.

Thus far, Republicans such as Sens. John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Jeff Flake have risked Trump’s wrath by objecting to the order. It is revealing that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell chose to duck — saying the courts would decide whether the order is constitutional — while House Speaker Paul Ryan chose to embrace the order rather than criticize it. These are not profiles in courage.

BLACK VOTERS MUST SHOW UP FOR MIDTERM ELECTIONS - TIME TO SPONSOR VOTER EXPRESS BUSES TO CARRY THEM TO THE POLLS

-->By Gloria Dulan-Wilson
I just read an article posted in THE ROOT, entitled "If Black Voters Don't Show Up for Midterms, 'Shame on Them.'"

While I've been saying the same thing, I think we all need to do more across the country than just criticize.  We have to be the facilitators to make sure that they have the means to participate, en masse, in the elections.

Let's get back to some real, old fashioned, Black in the day, grass roots measures to make sure that our people are represented at the polls in massive numbers.  When we first began voting, fifty (50) years ago, the responsibility of all our civic and civil rights organizations to hand carry our Black voters to the polls - whether we used vans, buses, or individual vehicles -  whatever.  It was an act of solidarity in the face of racists who were doing everything they could to block or intimidate them to keep them from voting.

Guess what - we are facing those very same threats today - by use of electronic and social media, TV ads, trickery lies, deceit; bogus ID requirements - our people are the prime targets of voter nullification across the country.  It's criminal, but it is also demoralizing and can have a negative affect on the numbers who turn out.

So,  it is not enough to admonish our people!!  We should have a Get On The Bus - Get Out The Vote movement across the country!  We can call it the BLACK VOTER EXPRESS! Or whatever you choose - but you get my drift.  Sometimes we're so sophisticated, we overlook the obvious.  There's definitely strength in numbers - so instead of criticizing, let's activate and actualize!  Let's show that we haven't forgotten what we learned from our ancestors.

NAACP, Urban League, Rainbow Push, National Action Network, 100 Black Men, Men Who Care, all the Sororities and Fraternities, all the Churches, Mosques, and  Community Based Organizations can coordinate and carve up their various communities into sectors - from Florida to Washington State; from California to Maine and all across the country, whether we are in the millions, thousands, or just two  - We can come together and hand carry our registered Black voters to their respective polls.  That way we are guaranteeing that they will show up. We can't afford to leave anything to chance.  If you're not an organization, get a neighborhood buddy system or just take your next door neighbor with you - and if you have time, have some coffee or tea later and congratulate yourselves on a job well done.

Churches that have their own vans can work with their congregations - and the vans or buses can either pick up the elderly at their homes, or arrange to have them meet at the church and transport them to their polling places.  Let's not make this rocket science.  It's quite simple.

GETTING OUT THE VOTE IS GOING TO TAKE ALL OF US - DON'T ASSUME EVERYBODY HAS IT TOGETHER, OR THAT EVERYBODY IS AWARE OF THEIR RIGHTS.

The following is the article that appeared in THE ROOT -

If Black Voters Don’t Show Up for Midterms, ‘Shame on Them’

The black vote can make or break some pivotal elections. The Root speaks with two political observers who say it’s time black voters started wielding that power in ways that matter.

Two women vote in the presidential election Nov. 4, 2008, in Birmingham, Ala. Mario Tama/Getty Images
What we do know is this year’s midterm Senate races will be tight—what we don’t know is just how tight. Despite constant spinning in the news cycle, most Americans either don’t know a big election is coming up or don’t care. In the last major midterm of 2010, only 41 percent of voters turned out or 91 million ballots counted—just 30 percent of the population. Are you OK with that?
That said: The African-American vote could play a decisive factor in congressional races in some key states, including places we keep hearing about, like Georgia, North Carolina, Louisiana and Arkansas (and in places where you don’t think black folks live but do, like Colorado and Kentucky). Are we really all that into the election (and really into what President Barack Obama is saying about it)? How far could Republican voter-ID and voter-suppression strategies go in keeping polling places as brazenly Caucasian as the cast of Friends?
This week’s installment of The Take turned to Hampton University journalism professor Wayne Dawkins and former GOP congressional candidate Lenny McAllister for context. Dawkins is author of City Son: Andrew W. Cooper’s Impact on Modern-Day Brooklyn, and McAllister is a KDKA and Pittsburgh Cable News network host.
Wayne Dawkins (@waydaw): Based on the campaign messages, the six Senate battlegrounds are unpredictable. The Arkansas, Georgia and North Carolina Senate races are lively.
Lenny McAllister (@lennymcallister): Republicans should take the Senate, but there is not the same wave of conservative passion hitting the airwaves and the campaign trail as there was in 2010. Because of that, there is a small, but distinct, opportunity for the Democrats to barely hold on to the U.S. Senate. The GOP has yet to cast aside the political-bogeyman mantra that the party has with non-Republican voters. Will independents break with the GOP in 2014 the same way they did in 2010? That is the question that will be answered in November. As of now, the answer appears to be no.
WD: Sure, black voter participation is normally down in off-cycles, but that could change this year. Look at what happened in Mississippi last spring. Republican Senate incumbent Thad Cochran was locked in a nasty primary fight with a Tea Party candidate. Cochran asked black voters for their votes, making the case that if he lost, Mississippi would lose experience, influence and bacon. The Tea Party candidate appeared too extreme compared to conservative Cochran.
African-American voters engaged and pulled Cochran over the top. Those voters should remind Cochran that they did him a huge solid. If voters of color care about reformed health care, student loans and consumer protection, they can’t afford to sit out this midterm. Otherwise they shouldn’t whine if they feel oppressed.
LM: The black vote plays a big role in this race, as it does in every race. The question is: Will the black electorate finally “get it”? Namely: 1) The black vote can swing every election; 2) The black vote should demand more from elected officials and candidates on a daily basis—not biannual basis; and 3) The black vote should be a “woo-able” electorate—not a voting bloc that remains in one camp without expectations of progress or results for our communities. With that in mind, I don’t know if the black electorate will come out en masse as it did in 2008 or 2012.
WD: If voters of color are a) not paying attention to the voter-ID stories and b) indifferent about those stories, shame on them. The Supreme Court has already rendered verdicts on three cases—restrictive voter-ID laws were upheld in two states but stricken in one—and the court was about to give its opinion regarding the Texas case. Voters of color came out strong in the 2012 presidential election when there was evidence of voter suppression and rich people trying to buy the election. It was a great moment when people fought the power at polls. That energy needs to return for this November’s midterm congressional elections.
LM: I do not call voter validation a “strategy” to “work for Republicans.” There is a reasonable expectation for voter-validation measures to be in place. The question with that issue is how they are implemented, from time frame to methodologies, to ensure that all eligible Americans have the right to vote.

Rainbow/Push WALL STREET PROJECT 2010 in New York City January 13 - 15

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

If it’s January, it must be time for Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Wall Street Project. And if you haven’t already done so, this is the time to register and get your business cards dusted off, your resumes ready and your business suits out of mothballs, because you just might meet your next employer there.

Below isthe basic information on the upcoming events being held at the Sheraton Hotel in Manhattan, 53rd and 7th Avenue. For further information or to register go on line an follow the prompts.

The concept of THE WALL STREET PROJECT was originated by Rev. Jesse Jackson when he realized that racism extended beyond segregation of neighborhoods, jobs and schools; it also encompassed economics (read MONEY) as well. Realizing that there was indeed a need for comprehensive involvement on the part of Black people in the realm of money and economic parity, he held the first Wall Street Project at the World Trade Center.

However, since 2008, it has never been more blatantly pointed up than in the past year during the aftermath of massive economic down turns, toxic mortgages, job shortages, lay offs and firings that ran over the Black community -- nationally and internationally -- like a mack truck on a mission.

Not only does the Black community financial literacy from the most elementary to the most advanced level, but we need to develop some serious "con-solidarity" (my word) -- a means by which we amalgamate our efforts to develop our own on-going financial institutions.

Hopefully this is what will be provided over the next few days that the WALL STREET PROJECT is in town. If it isn’t then perhaps you might want to come with some of your own ideas in order to help the project in the establishment of such a protocol. One which links our Main Street to our own new version of “Wall Street”. Where we develop our own mutual funds, triple tax free municipal bond funds; credit unions; home buying protocols. Art there some direct business linkages that can be developed between African Americans, Africans, Afri-Caribbeans, South Amercians, etc? that would be of mutual benefit to us all? These are some the burning questions that need to be answered. Our paradigm shift should be part and parcel of the upcoming Wall Street Project.

In the mean time, as always, there are plenty of opportunities and options for networking and uniting. See you there.

Our workshops, plenaries, roundtables, breakfasts and luncheons, along with our 2010 Career, Professional Development and Health Expo accentuate the positive and the outstanding individuals and businesses in enterprise today, while addressing the economic, entrepreneurial, career, social justice and community interests and concerns that are unique to men, women and children of African American, Hispanic and other diverse cultures. The Economic Summit also spotlights the accomplishments, goals, progressive vision and strategies for success of those who although traditionally and systematically road-blocked from access to economic opportunities, continue to infuse American and International business with creative, value added propositions.

Special Guest Economic and Financial Experts:
Marc H. Morial, President and CEO, National Urban League, Jim Reynolds, Loop Capital, Donna Sims Wilson, President M.R. Beal, Chris Williams, Williams Capital, Mellody Hobson, Ariel Investments, Bernard Beal, CEO M.R. Beal, Maceo Sloan, CEO NCM Capital Management and more!
