Just got this invite from PFAW (People For The American Way) and thought you'd be interested in it. They are having a conference call about the assault on our right to vote - They, meaning the repuglycons and the subprime court.  

DEAR ALEX HART:  

I think we should develop a universal voter registration card - that is like our passport - name, address, state, date of birth, photo i.d., with a swipe or indicia so that it can be scanned for authenticity, and it should be the standard issued to the bearer by the US Government - and only issued to American Citizens - 18 and over; it should be issued free of charge, with the only cost being that of the photo - because it's a  free right and responsibility for adults to register to vote - and it should be mandatory - the political affiliation is optional; it can then be tracked by either tapping it against a verification device, scanned, or swiped like a credit card. 

When voting, the person simply selects the candidates he or she is voting for, and then once selected, swipes the card through a reader to indicate that he has made his decision.  Once done, the computers register the vote, and the person is precluded from voting again elsewhere that particular election.  

This universal voter registration card is calibrated to the state the person is from, and makes it possible for him or her to vote in his or her local election, no matter where he or she is in the world.  It also cuts down on the arguments about different voting regulations, since all the states have to abide  by the regulations set out by the Federal government.  It mitigates discrimination from state to state because it is mandated and regulated by the Federal Government - which demands equal rights for all.  

I also think the voter registration card should be given to each adolescent as he or she turns 18, along with a mandatory voter education training to be administered by their high school (in much the same way schools have driver education training classes). 

I further think that states that violate a citizen's right to vote should be precluded from receiving any government funding until they relent and repent.  It is a Federal offense and a violation of that individual's or group's  civil rights and should be treated as such. Any and all individuals who are party to such violations should be fined and jailed.  

DON'T DEBATE IT - JUST DO IT!

Voting rights are under attack. 

Across the country, the right to vote is being eroded by state and local legislation that disproportionately targets people of color, immigrants, and young people. Just last month, for instance, Alabama -- which already has a controversial voter ID law -- shuttered 31 driver’s licenses offices in mostly black counties, making it that much harder for tens of thousands of people to get the ID they need to vote. Election Day 2016 will be the first presidential election in 50 years in which voters will not have the full protections of the Voting Rights Act, in the wake of the 2013 Supreme Court decision in Shelby v. Holder that gutted a key provision of the VRA. And since the next president will almost certainly have the opportunity to nominate at least one new Supreme Court justice, next year could determine the Court’s future -- and the potential for more devastating 5-4 decisions like Shelby. 

That’s why, one year out from the 2016 election, PFAW is hosting a member telebriefing next week to recap the rampant attacks we’ve seen on voting rights recently (and will continue to see in the run-up to the election), and what we can do on the federal, state, and local levels to counter them. We’ll be joined by PFAW Director of Outreach and Public Engagement Diallo Brooks, as well as PFAW board member and former chairwoman of the United States Commission on Civil Rights, Dr. Mary Frances Berry.

EMERGENCY EVENT ALERT: PEOPLE FOR THE AMERICAN WAY CONFERENCE CALL TODAY - BE IN IT!!

2014, as I keep reiterating, is a pivotal year - not one to be viewed from the sidelines, or a wait and see posture; but one where we have to be involved up to our hair lines; especially if we want to see all the things we worked so hard for and voted for to bear fruit.  

I'm reposting this from PFAW = PEOPLE FOR THE AMERICAN WAY - they ae hosting a call in today for an upcoming senate briefing to get Citizens United Repealed.  For those of you who may be unfamiliar with that little gem that was imposed upon us by the Subprime Court - it's the one that says that corporations are the same as human beings, and therefore can donate as much money as they want to a political campaign.  
It's the same subprime court that has tried to reverse our right as citizens to vote; and also gave major corporations the right to imminent domain regardless of what the purpose of building the property was, without your right to recourse, or even equitable compensation.

PFAW has gathered 422,000 signatures thus far - which is ridiculous when you consider how many people the Citizens United law has harmed - that should be ten times the amount. 

I highly recommend - urge - that you be a part of the call this afternoon, and the cause going forward.  

One thing about it - if we do what we're supposed to do with voter registration, petitions, campaigning, and keeping our neighbors and each other informed, in the loop, involved and on the case, we will have major victories on our hands all over the US; we definitely won't be bored, and we can begin to breathe a sigh of relief that President Obama now has the majority and the backing he needs to go forward in helping restabilize this country - therefore us - individually and collectively.
