.ICYMI or were watching Netflix: Social media is trying to distort and destroy Positive Black Images

Hello All

 Disgusting cartoon rip off of Black TV series Good Times by Netflix - this is an insult to Black people to present such negative distortions of Black Family Entertainment

Now that I have your attention:

In 2004-05 meanstream media moguls suddenly cancelled all Black positive image TV shows and replaced them with what I call the who- hates-who genre.  Sadly most of us didn’t notice, didn’t blink an eye, day a word.  We have now been saturated with the most negative, distorted, divisive versions of Black culture - inculcating it into our daily interactions with each other to such an extent we automatically expect the worst of each other.  So now meanstream media is doubling down and denigrating some of our most treasured, positive TV shows and inundating them with hate, negativity and disrespect starting with GOOD TIMES  - the 1970s TV show that featured a Black Family that loved and supported each other, despite poverty and other problems. One of the biggest culprits is NETFLIX - who has released a pilot filled with disrespect, children with guns, hypersexualizing young Black girls - !!!

 

 

 I wonder whether any of these   producers would want to have their own children exposed to these kinds of negative images.  But we can't just blame the producers and writers - we parents and viewers have a share in the responsibility for allowing these programs into our homes, subscribing to the media, and sitting there watching it with our children instead of making sure their viewing is something positive, empowering and creative.  In my article, "How Not To Raise A Vidiot," I taught parents how to pre-screen programs to make sure they were appropriate for their children.  Now, more than ever, we have to make sure our children are not being programmed by negative media. 

While it may have appeared to fly low under the radar, CEMOTAP - a Black activist organization  - which means Committee To Eliminate Media Offenses To African People - held an emergency tribunal on this latest insult to Black people, and have issued a call for action from Black people, educators, officials, parents - including cancelling subscriptions to Netflix and consequencing the producers and participants in this gross distortion of Black people.

HOW DOES THE PHOTO ABOVE COMPARE WITH THIS ORIGINAL CAST OF THE HIT FAMILY ORIENTED COMEDY SHOW "GOOD TIMES?"

No one loves comedy more than Black people - but the kind of degenerate, distorted, disrespectful depiction of our people, culture, family values and race has to stop immediately, if not sooner.  Not only does it harm our children’s self image, it sends signals to others about who we are.

CEMOTAP is asking all Black subscribers to cancel their Netflix subscription; circulate and sign cease and desist petitions, protest producers of Netflix shows.  Provide positive alternative viewing for yourself and your family.  Start watching some of the vintage Black tv shows they still have currency until newer, positive shows are produced.
