FRI 12PM: Rally Urging Sen. Casey, Reps. Boyle, Scanlon, Dean, Houlahan, and Wild to Protect and Expand Pathway to Citizenship in Federal Budget
After judge’s decision to end DACA, Congress must protect pathway for 5 million, expand to all 11 million undocumented Americans in budget negotiations
PHILADELPHIA – As part of a national day of action Friday, a coalition of Pennsylvania immigrant justice groups will gather outside the Philadelphia Amtrak station, urging Sen. Bob Casey, Rep. Brendan Boyle, Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, Rep. Madeleine Dean, Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, Rep. Susan Wild and the rest of Pennsylvania’s Congressional delegation to protect the pathway to citizenship for 5 million in the federal budget, and work towards a pathway for all 11 million undocumented Americans. Polling shows that there is overwhelming bipartisan support for a pathway to citizenship for millions of immigrants.
Said Prudence Powell, DACA recipient and Civic Engagement Coordinator at PICC:
“Millions of undocumented Americans and our families have waited a long time to be recognized in the country that is our home, and Congress finally has a proposal on the table. But right now in DC, politicians are trying to cut citizenship out of the budget, while millions of lives like mine hang in the balance. I am tired of living in fear of being taken away from my children, or not being able to support my family if DACA ends. Right now is the time for Senator Casey and all our representatives to stand strong on including citizenship in the budget, and deliver what the majority of Americans support: Fixing our immigration system with citizenship for all 11 million.”

Throughout the year, Pennsylvania immigrants and advocates have called for a pathway to citizenship to be included in the budget, sending more than 1,000 letters and making thousands of phone calls. Women immigrant essential workers held a protest outside of Senator Casey’s Philadelphia office, and delivered a personal letter detailing how one woman’s undocumented status makes it possible for people to abuse and exploit her. In June, more than 45 organizations and elected officials across Pennsylvania sent a letter urging Senator Casey and Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation to support a pathway to citizenship in the budget, and won a commitment for Senator Casey’s support of a pathway to citizenship for all 11 million undocumented Americans, announced at a town hall attended by more than 220 people from immigrant and allied communities.
Last week, the national movement for citizenship scored a crucial victory when Congressional Democrats announced they would include a pathway to citizenship for 5 million immigrant youth, TPS holders, farm workers, and essential workers in their budget package. The stakes were raised when Judge Hanen ruled to strike down the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, leaving millions of lives and futures in the balance.
