HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVERYONE!!!
And we have much to celebrate - Not only do we have many great ancestors who have made history but our contemporaries and our peers are making history in real time.Kamala Harris, The Late Cicely Tyson, Stacey Abrams, Raphael Warnock, TaNihisi Coats, Ben Crump, Maxine Waters, Regina King, Black Women 4 Biden, BLACK LIVES MATTER, Hakeem Jeffries, Amanda Gorman, Michelle Obama, Barack Obama, Arikana Chihombori-Quao, Sheryl Lee Ralph, LeBron James, Dr. Brenda Allen, Dr. EFaye Williams, New York Attorney General Letitia James, Marcia Fudge, Michael Choard, Stephen Kinsey, and so many others are making a difference in real time - and these are only a few of thousands. It's time we became more acquainted with them and those who are not making the headlines, but are nevertheless doing some wonderful things in the community of Black People. The list is growing exponentially - and it's our responsibility to learn who they are, what they've accomplished, teach our children and our peers, and begin to demand the schools include them in the history and civics lessons so our children learn who they are as well. Failing that, as the first, and primary educators for our children, we should make sure they are surrounded by books, images, and information that is rich with the info about their accomplishments. While we're at it, it is imperative that our children and our educators - especially our Black educators - learn about the writings and contributions of Dr. CARTER G WOODSON, the founder of Negro History Week, upon with BLACK HISTORY MONTH is based. Had it not been for him, we probably would have a great deal of the info we currently have.
Tomorrow, another history maker, Philadelphia's own, Dr. Molefi Asante, is guest speaker on the AFROCENTRIC PARADIGM, presented by the INTERNATIONAL AFRICAN ARTS FESTIVAL (also known as THE AFRICAN STREET FESTIVAL). Make sure you tune in. It's going to be enlightening, inspiring and informative.
This is not only our history, it's our present and our future.
If we don't honor and support it, we lose the real sense of who we are and what we have done and can do.
