GUEST POST: GUARDIAN - "Top economist: US coronavirus response is like 'third world' country"

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

Joseph Stiglitz attacks Donald Trump, saying US on course for second Great Depression - and he's totally right - and like most of the white people on this planet - totally on the late show.  What is it about these people that they can't see the evil and speak and act on it when they see it.  I totally agree with what he says, but he should have said it back in February when it was beginning to appear that T-rump was clueless, useless, selfish, and dangerous.  Traits, by the way, that he's exhibited all along - from the time he began running for president, through the debates with Hillary Clinton, through the day he lied on a stack of Bibles about protecting and serving the country, through every other utterance and action since he became the ersatz president.
Those of us who are Native American or African American know this syndrome all too well.  They turn a blind eye to their own evil, cruelties, frailties, deception, but can see any error we make totally clearly.  Additionally, we can see all too well what is going on, point it out in total detail, but it will never be recognized or valid until someone white comes along and says the exact same thing that we've been pointing out all along.  Now we might not have made the comparison to a "third world country," but we knew enough, from day one, to know that Trump had absolutely no clue or concern about the virus or who it touched, until it hit his Wall Street Cronies and investors - and cast a shadow on his possibilities of re-election.

Stiglitz says that Democrats need to be ready and prepared because T-RUMP FIGHTS DIRTY - which means that this will indeed have to be a true battle for the soul of America - where every vote counts and he will stoop as low as the primordial ooze from which he emerged, along with his co-horts, to "win" the election.

We can't take anything for granted with him.  While his caucasian brothers are slowly beginning to realize that they have a newly formed Hitler who is trying to take over America, most Black people, European, and people of other cultures, knew it from the very beginning. Putin, his sidekick, will be part and parcel of this bogus election, just like he was in 2016 - but T-rump has developed new and more nefarious means of overthrowing this government.  And the "mismanagement of the pandemic" has opened the door to even more egregious acts.

It's not enough to read about it, or listen to statements on TV or watch as McConnell co-signs his bullshit, or he holds bogus press conference to send coded messages to his crew of MagaMaggots, we have to read, and be prepared to make it our business, individually and collectively to use our constitutional rights to resist being forced into a dictatorship, complicated by a major depression - but one in which he and his cronies continue to prosper while the rest of the world struggles under the consequences of not having taken the appropriate action from the beginning.

One of the things that all Americans need to do during this pandemic and crisis of American Consciousness is examine just what happened to us that allowed this to get this far out of hand?  Are we so gullible and complacent, the would allow our country to slide so precipitously into a level of moral turpitude - where children can be separated from their families, where the medical safetynets and other things that made this country "great" and a leader among other countries in the world, down to a level where no one wants to be us or associated with us.  Where we have so given over our power and freedom that all we can do is sit up at night and watch comedians and news analyst blast his actions, but have the power to make it stop.  We enjoy the comedy, but back there in our subconscious minds we know that it's really little more than gallows humor.  Because the next day, a few tweets from a nitwit, can cause chaos, confusion, and the loss of yet another time honored freedom.  Signing away the CDC and health programs that would at least have mitigated some of the carnage we're suffering through the massive loss of lives.  A dithering idiot goes before the cameras and advocates putting Americans back in harms way to re-open businesses because his cronies are losing money.  Whose racist ranters are terrorizing governors of different states to undermine their authority to protect their citizens.  Who now threatens to de-fund the US Postal Service, saying there are no more funds, in a not so slick effort to thwart the possibility of voting by mail.

And now, here we are, sitting on the top of the dung heap of a person whose thumbs should be glued so they can never tweet again, and even the repuglycons are praying that something stops the madness.   Because if we don't reign this in, we will indeed end up being a banana republic.  SMH

Donald Trump’s botched handling of the Covid-19 crisis has left the US looking like a “third world” country and on course for a second Great Depression, one of the world’s leading economists has warned.

In a withering attack on the president, Joseph Stiglitz said millions of people were turning to food banks, turning up for work due to a lack of sick pay and dying because of health inequalities.
The Nobel prize-winning economist said: “The numbers turning to food banks are just enormous and beyond the capacity of them to supply. It is like a third world country. The public social safety net is not working.”

Stiglitz, a long-term critic of Trump, said 14% of the population was dependent on food stamps and predicted the social infrastructure could not cope with an unemployment rate that could hit 30% in the coming months.
“We have a safety net that is inadequate. The inequality in the US is so large. This disease has targeted those with the poorest health. In the advanced world, the US is one of the countries with the poorest health overall and the greatest health inequality.”
Stiglitz said Republicans had opposed proposals to give those affected by coronavirus 10 days’ sick leave, meaning many employees were going to work even while infected. “The Republicans said no because they said it would set a bad precedent. It is literally unbelievable.”

He added: “The safety net is not adequate and is propagating the disease. There is very weak unemployment insurance and people don’t think they can rely on it.”

During an interview with the Guardian to mark the paperback publication of his book People, Power, and Profits, Stiglitz was asked whether the US might be heading for a second Great Depression.
“Yes is the answer in short,” he said. “If you leave it to Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell [the Republican Senate majority leader] we will have a Great Depression. If we had the right policy structure in place we could avoid it easily.”

Stiglitz said that as a result of Trump’s mismanagement, the White House office responsible for pandemics had been closed, funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had been cut, and the US had gone into the crisis without enough testing kits, masks and protective gear. Encouraged by Trump, some parts of the US were determined to reopen in a way that would facilitate the transmission of the disease and lead to a fresh outbreak, he added.

“In those circumstances it won’t be the government enforcing the lockdown, it will be fear. The concern is that people are not going to be spending on anything other than food and that’s the definition of a Great Depression.

“We were unprepared but, even given the degree of unpreparedness, Trump’s decision to make this about politics rather than about science has meant we have responded far more poorly.”

Stiglitz said that if Trump were defeated in the presidential contest in November and the Democrats took control of both houses of Congress there was a chance of the US moving in a more progressive direction, but he warned Republicans would fight dirty in order to cling on to power.

“There is voter suppression and gerrymandering. The Republican party knows it’s a minority party and there is a no-holds-barred struggle going on to make sure a minority party rules America.”
Stiglitz said the current crisis would force countries to make themselves less vulnerable, and this would lead to shorter supply chains and a greater emphasis on self-sufficiency in food and energy.
He added that the complexity of modern production methods meant autarky was not feasible but added: “Fighting global pandemics and climate change require global cooperation. It’s just that the president of the United States doesn’t understand that. (He understands, he just  doesn't give a damn!)

“I hope we emerge from this with the perspective that multilateralism is even more important than we thought. It can’t just be a corporate-driven globalisation. We have to make it more resilient.’###
