IT'S JULY - LOTS TO DO - LET'S CELEBRATE!

Hello All:


Well, we made it through Black People's Month - also known as June - we dominated that month - with so much to do and to celebrate:  Black Music Month, Caribbean Heritage Month, Odunde, Juneteenth (nationwide).  But, if you think you can sit back and coast your way through the summer - you are totally mistaken.  It's really getting ready to ramp up - and I've only included a few relevant events.  There's a ton of stuff happening - entertainment, forums, workshops, demonstrations, during the month of July - not to mention the most significant:  The celebration of the BIRTH OF THIS NATION. (There are some who celebrate it, and some who don't - I suggest you take the time to appreciate the issues on both sides of the line)  

Me, I'm up for sitting by the waterfront and enjoying the fireworks; roasting franks over open fire; making my own popcorn and just chilling out enjoying the day.  Sometimes you just have to take a break and chill.   And after back to back activities throughout June, that's exactly what I'm going to do.

The 40th Street Summer Series—co-produced by University City District, Penn, and The Rotunda—has grown into one of the most popular outdoor summer events in University City. This free outdoor series features internationally-recognized talent in one of “West Philly’s picturesque open green spaces” (Philadelphia Weekly). In the past, the Summer Series has featured internationally-acclaimed acts such as the Millennial Territory Orchestra, Man Man, and the Sun Ra Arkestra, playing free outdoor concerts that capture the soul of the neighborhood.

The "Voices Of Africa" Choral & Percussion Ensemble

VOA has now become an "African Cultural Arts Collective" that works with a variety of committed African Cultural Artist from around the Diaspora.

Cooley High, with its focus on the coming of age of a group of teenagers, offered a contrast to the Blaxploitation films that had arisen during the late 1960s and early ‘70s. Rather than focusing on larger-than-life protagonists and outrageous crime syndicates, Cooley High depicted the everyday lives and problems of typical urban high schoolers and their families, and helped to usher in a new type of black cinema. Over the years, it has showcased films from all parts of the world, representing such countries as Angola, Nigeria, Jamaica, New Zealand, Rwanda, Canada, Mozambique, Egypt, the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Brazil, Kenya, Fiji, Mexico, the U.K., South Africa, England, Japan, France and of course, the United States. With the pulse on the international film market, PAFF has opened the minds of its audiences, and transported them to far-away places and back home again. “Over the years, filmmakers the world over have become more sophisticated in telling their stories,” says Asantewa Olatunji, the director of programming for PAFF. “In our ever-shrinking world, it is so important to understand the experiences and points of views of diverse peoples and cultures.”   Last year, more than 40,000 people attended the film festival, which has long been a highly anticipated event in Los Angeles attended by local, national and international guests. Preferably, films should depict positive and realistic images and can be of any genre — drama, comedy, horror, action/adventure, animation, romance, science fiction, experimental, historical/epic, etc. PAFF accepts features and shorts both narrative and documentary.   COMPETITION: The PAFF competition categories are: Best Narrative Feature, Best Narrative Short, Best Documentary (Short or Feature), Best Director — First Feature, Best Web-Series, plus a variety of Audience Favorite Awards. Films in competition must be copyrighted no earlier than 2019. With the exception of Audience Favorite Awards, films are judged by industry professionals.
