The Kama-Sahlor Group for Cultural Performing Arts
‘Art Saves Lives’

Snow B - a modern retelling of Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs debuts  Friday, August 9th
Snow B is a modern day hip/hop retelling of the classic tale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This story written by Playwright, and Director, Lisa Y. Hopkins was written to address the ills of bullying that can lead to developing low self esteem and clinical depression. The Kama- Sahlor Group utilizes art to save lives to bring awareness to hopefully prevent this social disorder to coming to a head.

The Kama-Sahlor Group for Cultural Performing Arts presents, ‘Snow B,’ on Friday, August 9, 2019 at Parkway NW High School for Peace & Social Justice at 6:30pm. Children from Camp Kama- Sahlor for Performing Arts coming from all over Philadelphia and the suburbs have been cast in this hip/hop culture production.

Several hip/hop musical selections from the 1980’s hit ‘Funk You Up; by the Sugar Hill Label group, The Sequence is remixed to feature the talents of three leading role actresses, Kaila Ramos portraying Quenella, the evil step-mom, Jocelyn ‘JJ’ Butler who represents the mirror telling Queenella that she is not the finest of them all and Kaya Moore portraying the sweet and innocent Snow B.   This stage play incorporates break dance movements and acrobatic movement designed by Jasmine Joseph, a 2018 graduate from the High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) and a Kama-Sahlor alum.

Envy and jealousy play an evil and abusive part in the heart of the evil stepmother, Queenella as she tries to steal Prince from Snow B at the Extravaganz as she prepares an deadly sleeping portion. Will the kiss from Prince save Snow B from the curse? Come and see.

This comedic and family oriented performance is open to the public and ticket information can be obtained by calling the Kama- Sahlor Group @ 215900-1044 or lisayhop@msn.co

‘Heritage’ Showcase Debuts
Friday, March 3rd @ Emlen

The Kama -Sahlor Group for Cultural Performing Arts is a haven for children who have been given the opportunity to freely express themselves through a performing arts platform.
Friday’s March 3, 2017 performance will feature children from K to 10th grades from Eleanor C. Emlen and other northwest regional schools.

The audience will be engaged in multicultural disciplines of dance, African folksongs and dramatic arts  stemming from traditional African Rites of Passage ‘Sinte” Dance at its best, along with a modern Kukere style, Caribbean dance by choreographer Jortae Charles formerly from New Freedom Theater along with  explosive acrobatic stunts.

The children have been trained in African history and culture, African folk music, dramatic arts, public speaking and African and hip/hop dances since October 2016 and are elated to showcase their talents.

As the month of March recognizes ‘Women in History’, there will be a presentation devoted to the women who have contributed to our history such as:  Queen Hatsheput of Egypt, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges and Maya Angelou in the mini-play, ‘Heritage’ written and directed by Lisa Y. Hopkins, Founder of the Kama- Sahlor Group.

A presentation will highlight the song ‘Glory’ from the civil rights film, ‘Selma’ originally performed by John Legend and rap artist Common. This song depicts our iconic leaders, Martin Luther King Jr. during his fight for voter civil  rights and Nasser Ragin an 8th grade rapper from Amy Northwest Middle School and Jaron Elijah Hopkins, an 8th  grade singer from John Story Jenks Academy of Arts and Sciences will both perform  the song as special guests duet.

Kama- Sahlor offered an internship to Parvati Thomas, a 12th grader from Mathematics Civics and Science Charter School for her 8 years of training  experience in African dance, and her professional performances in Kama- Sahlor’s past productions at  the Independent Seaport Museum and at a Juneteenth Festival  held at the Johnson House Historic Site. We also were selected to mentor Syniah Jones, a 10th grade student of Mastery Charter School  from Gratz’s campus who will perform  a solo dance part and portray Maya Angelo in the ‘Heritage’ skit.

The production will debut on Friday, March 3, 2017 for two shows at 1:45pm and 6:00pm at Eleanor C. Emlen Elementary School located at 6501 Chew Avenue in Mt. Airy. Funding was provided by the Philadelphia Activity Fund through Councilwoman Cindy Bass.
