GDW EVENT ALERT: Germantown Juneteenth Presentation at Lucien Blackwell Library Wednesday, June 12

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

History is in the making, indeed!!  And actually has been unfolding under our very noses for decades.  Pennsylvania is now on the path to making JUNETEENTH AN OFFICIAL STATE HOLIDAY - and Ron Brown  - Mr. Juneteenth - founder of the Philadelphia Junteenth Committee will be going over the significance of the entire Juneteenth Week, historically and currently in this 400th Commemoration of the enslavement of Black people.

As a kid in Oklahoma City, OK, i grew up celebrating Juneteenth - where all the Black families would gather together and commemorate how far we've come.  There would be cook outs, picnics, fireworks, speeches.  Of course, as a kid, all this went completely over my head. What I remembered, at the time, was all the good food, the fun, games, and loving the opportunity to be out with my cousins and friends - ripping and running through the park, and watching the fireworks.

At the age of 10, the significance of Juneteenth really began to hit home as our teachers told us about how the brothers and sisters in Texas were lied to, and held captive for two additional years, even though the Emancipation Proclamation had been, and had gone into effect in January of 1863.   Oklahoma had been designated as Indian Territory - set aside for the Five Civilized Tribes - but there was a goodly portion of Black Families that populated the area as well - from 1835 - the beginning of the Trail of Tears; and those who had silently stole away across the Oklahoma/Texas and Oklahoma/Missouri Borders - where they could not be compelled to return because, during that time, until 1889, it was illegal for whites to be there.

The tradition of Juneteenth began to be celebrated in Oklahoma shortly after the end of the Civil War - and has continued to the present time.

The legislation that is now before the Pennsylvania State Government is monumental - and should be applauded and supported.  Kudos to Ron Brown and all those legislators and community activists who have supported it.

"Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated day to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. 2019 also represents the 154th Anniversary of Juneteenth celebrated in the United States.
2019 is historically significant – it represents the 400th anniversary – 1619 – of when enslaved Africans arrived in Hampton, Virginia aboard a Dutch ship.  They were the first Africans on record to be forcibly settled as involuntary laborers in the North American British Colonies." Johnson House Historic Site

You should be there this evening at the Lucien E. Blackwell Library!  Your Children should be there, as well.  This is monumental!  Every Black person in Philaldelphia - regardless of their age - should be there!  This is about Us!  For Us!  By Us! And you should also participate in the various Juneteenth celebrations that are taking place throughout Philadelphia, including Germantown Juneteenth Festival, on Germantown Ave., Saturday, June 15, from 12:00 PM - 7:00PM- See Below for links to information on other Juneteenth Events through Philadelphia.

                                      @ 6 PM, Wednesday June 12, 2019

History in the Making, Juneteenth HB 619 was introduced by PA House Republican Sue Helm and has multiple co-sponsors; please observe HB619 link ttps://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/billInfo/billInfo.cfm?sYear=2019&sInd=0&body=H&type=B&bn=0619, or the below attachment.

HB619 passed the House Chambers on May 6th 191-0, declaring Juneteenth a state holiday in Pennsylvania. HB619 was sent to the PA State Senate on May 17th 2019; whereas HB619 passed out of the PA Senate State Government Committee, on June 6, 2019. HB619 is now headed to the PA Senate Floor for a vote and passage on the Senate floor on June 17th. Pennsylvania’s Governor Tom Wolf awaits HB619, for signage into law on 06-19-2019, Juneteenth Day; in the 400th commemoration year of 1619.

Ron Brown, Northeast Regional Juneteenth Director, Founder and Chairperson of Pennsylvania Juneteenth Coalition, will give a presentation on Juneteenth’s National and Philadelphia origin.
Philadelphia’s Juneteenth origin began on June 19th 1863. Philadelphia Freedom March ended in Texas with the freeing of the last slaves in Galveston Texas on June 19th 1865. Ron Brown a native Philadelphian founded Germantown Juneteenth Coalition (GJC) in 1995. GJC hosted one of PA’s first Juneteenth Celebrations, in Germantown PA in 1997. GJC 1997 Juneteenth celebration has evolved to a Coalition of Juneteenth Celebrations, taking place in counties throughout the State of Pennsylvania.
Ron Brown will present on Juneteenth’s PA HB619, its origin, its status, and how its passage on June 19, 2019 will establish Juneteenth as a state legal holiday in Pennsylvania; history in the making in the 400th Commemoration of 1619.
Ron Brown will present on how Pennsylvania’s Juneteenth Celebration also commemorates June 19, 1863, the date on which the PA Abolitionist Society and the Union League of Philadelphia members gathered for a meeting to enforce President Abraham Lincoln Emancipation.

PA's first Abolitionist  Society and the Union League received the assistance of Octavius Catto, Frederick Douglas, and Harriet Tubman to precipitate the enlistment of what would become 11 Regiments of 10, 940 African USCTs in Camp William Penn (CWP), the first and largest federal training camp of USCT’s enlisted in the Civil War. CWP’s 6th, 8th, 22nd, 41st, 43rd, and 127th Infantries fought and defeated the Confederate Army at the Siege of Petersburg, VA. The six USCT Infantries were re-organized to form the 25th Corps, which defeated and precipitated General Robert E. Lee's surrender to Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, and the Union Army.

USCT of the 22nd Infantry of the 25th Corps, was assigned, and led President Abraham Lincoln's  Funeral Procession on April 25th, 1865. The 22nd Infantry was then assigned to, and did capture John Wilkes Booth and Lincoln's assassins on the Eastern Shores of Maryland.

The 22nd Infantry rejoined the 25th Corps and was mustered to Texas. The 25th Corps was assigned to surround and guard General Gordon Granger as he read General Order # 3 to enslaved Africans outside of the Osterman Building, the Union Headquarters, in Galveston Texas on June 19, 1865.

General Order # 3's reading led to the eruption of a spontaneous celebration in the streets of Galveston Texas, and the assembled Africans named the day, Juneteenth, which evolved from the combination of June, the month in which the celebration occurred and  teenth, June 13th to June 19th (June-teenth), the length of time of 25th Corps Freedom March through Texas.

Juneteenth represents the date slavery finally came to an end in Galveston Texas, the last slave in the last slave state in the United States. Whereas 45 States, the District of Columbia, and other countries have designated “Juneteenth NATIONAL FREEDOM DAY” as a special day of observance in recognition of the emancipation of all slaves in the United States.
