July 11 - 29, 2018
The Peculiar Patriot confronts the complex and critical issue of mass incarceration. With more than 2.5 million people behind bars, America is the world’s leading prison superpower. The Peculiar Patriot examines the human impact and inhuman machinery of the prison industrial complex and shines a glaring light on the racial disparities that feed the draconian system. The play follows protagonist Betsy LaQuanda Ross, a self-proclaimed Peculiar Patriot, as she makes regular visits to penitentiaries to boost the morale of her incarcerated friends and family, navigating love between barbed wire. As she shares neighborhood updates and gossip and reminisces about family, Betsy delivers a shrewd indictment of the criminal justice system in her own authentic and inimitable style, with a heavy dose of humor to boot.

Israel Houghton

I can't say enough about this brother - ISRAEL HOUGHTON - I am a fan for life- ever since I first saw him when he served as praise and worship leader on Joel Osteen's Ministry at Lakewood Church, to the three times I had the privilege of seeing him live in concert - you cannot sit there with that magical miraculous onslaught of music that he and New Breed continue to deliver consistently - and not leave inspired and ready to face everything.  In fact, I listen to his music almost every day before going out into the community to set and uplift my mood for the day.  I miss his presence at Lakewood Church - I used to call him, Cindy Cruse Ratcliff, Da'Dra Crawford Greathouse and Steve Crawford the A-TEAM OF PRAISE AND WORSHIP - their voices blended together so beautifully.
Make it your business to catch this inspirational tour de force!!

iBuyBlack - Community meeting
(10:00AM-12:00Noon)
This is the last major community meeting before the upcoming, epochmaking JUNETEENTH PARADE which takes place in Philly on June 23 - Vendors, Volunteers, merchants, participants, community leaders, elected officials and Philadelphians of good will are invited to come out and show support, pitch in, and learn what's in store as we launch the greatest ever solute to our ancestors and the celebration of the announcement of freedom from slavery that took place over 150 years ago.  This is truly history in the making - and you definitely want to be a part of it PHILADELPHIA - how sad it would be to be sitting here and not be able to say to your children, family and friends that you didn't know it was going on or that it was going to be that good.
The meeting takes place at Masjidullah - 7401 Limekiln Pike, Philadelphia, 19150

ODUNDE 2018
(3:30-5:30PM)
You are in for a major treat at this year's Dialogue on Women's Leadership because one of the most dynamic women I have ever had the pleasure of meeting will be the KeyNote Speaker, Her ExcellencyArikana Chihombori-Quao.  I had the honor of meeting and interviewing her at last year's Constituency For Africa Conference in Washington, DC, and boy, was I blown away - she was dynamic, forthright, insightful, courageous, entertaining and ON A MISSION FOR AFRICA'S FUTURE!!! I put that in all caps because her vision for Africa so much mirrors what we recently resonated to when we saw the epochmaking movie, BLACK PANTHER and WAKANDA.  It was as though she had spoken it into being though she and the director and writer had never met!!! What a vision - and she is looking to accelerate Africa's progress using African power, creativity, intelligence and ingenuity.  In fact, she makes me believe that under her leadership, WAKANDA is an eminent possibility in the near future.
Bring paper and pen, because you are gonna wanna take notes.  Seriously speaking, though, if we can each take even a small piece of her insight and wisdom with us into whatever it is we are looking to accomplish, we can't lose.
The event is co-sponsored by City Council Representative Jannie L Blackwell and Congressman Dwight Evans - RSVP to the Hon. Stanley L. Straughter -  slstraughter@verizon.net

Alert to my brothers and sisters in Los Angeles and surrounding areas - or those who are headed there for the summer - please check out this play:

Michael Kelly is the son of author/activist Deborah Kelly (The TurnAround).   The  premiere of his new play, Villain, the story of the immediate aftermath of a white police officer shooting an African American, unarmed teen. In writing this play,  he wanted to start a dialogue about how a tragedy like this can happen and why it is allowed to happen in our society. The play will be presented at the Hollywood Fringe Festival on June 10,13,16,17,21,24.

Michael contacted me to ask that I post it in my blog, and stated, "We need as many people to see this play as possible, so that this message can reach a bigger audience in the future. This is a very important story to me and it should be told now.  I have attached the postcard with the dates and times. You can purchase tickets at http://www.hollywoodfringe.org/projects/4968
