GDW EVENT ALERT - JANUARY 6- 23 - 2017

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All & HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

This is my first GDW EVENT ALERT  of 2017 - It's not so much that I'm getting a late start, as it is that Ive been so inundated with activities, I haven't been able to just sit down and write about them in advance.

So, I'm deliberately slowing myself down, and posting events that I think you should be aware of and involved in during this first month of the New Year of 2017.

I heard so many people disparage 2016 and say it was the worst season they had endured.  They were glad to see it go.   I concur - I have never seen a year piled up with so many negatives, invectives and hostilities in my entire life.  I would like to say that 2017 will  be a better year - but it won't get that way by itself.  Remember we may be ushering in the era of American Fascism and Nazism under Herr T-Rump and his henchmen - If anyone thought the negativity stopped abruptly at 11:59 of 2016, and magically turned the page and became all squeaky clean and nice with the beginnings of 2017 - you are living in some sort of fantasy movie - because that's the only place that actually happens.

No, a lot of that madness from 2016 has crossed the line with us and is looking us right in the face - big as life and twice as ugly.  Not that "life" is ugly - just the aspects that we are currently dealing with - that we seem to be "powerless" to affect, are.  It would be stupid of me to say that we are not materially, emotionally, socially, mentally, spiritually, physically, and economically by this madness - because most of the events of 2016 were directly aimed at us - BLACK PEOPLE!!!  The ersatz election was retaliation for our moving forward, for having elected TWICE a strong, fine, powerful, intelligent Black man with an exemplary, loving, wonderful, BLACK Wife and family.  It was retaliation for all of the Black talent, geniuses, businesses, artists, families, who likewise proved that we definitely did not fit the stereotype and mold they continuously and systematically try to force us into.  It was retaliation for those brave men and women who put ethics in front of racism and ego, and chose to make a difference as opposed to just going for self gratification.

We are now entering an age of resistance - we are entering an age of hostility - 2017 - once that oaf takes the oath of office - and his cronies are in place - will make Krystalnacht look like a cakewalk - and if you don't know what Krystalnacht is, it's probably because for the past 40 years there has been a deliberate, consistent, and insidious dumbing down of the American education system.  Krytalnacht is the beginnings of the Nazi destruction of Germany's freedom.  And T-Rump has now formulated his own - with the repuglycons as his goose-stepping henchmen, backed by Russian contacts and affiliations.  If T-rump is scary, then his VP is even more insidious - Pence looks like something Hollywierd would have created as the perfect villain's side kick - he more slithers than he does anything else - which is why he was chosen.

Now, I didn't want to frighten the Beejeebers out of you - this is just to alert you that my GDW EVENT ALERTS,  will, of necessity, be taking a slightly different tone and slant as we begin to really unpack all that has transpired, and focus on what we as BLACK PEOPLE have to do to not only survive, but thrive over the next four years.  A good portion of my announcements will not be just about entertainment and art shows - they will also encompass events that we have to participate in, no matter who is presenting them, so that we can take ourselves out of the equation of being on the late show.  That means that it will include rallies, and conferences - but it can't be just about that - it must include wealth building, survival skills, health programs (not the bogus snake oil stuff - lol), education programs, etc.

Our ancestors survived through worse times than this - true.  But I don't want us to just survive, we have to thrive, grow, and surpass.  And I don't have all the answers, nor do I know where all the events and programs are that are adequately addressing these needs and issues head on - so I am requesting your assistance in this matter - if you are aware of upcoming events, programs, forums, classes, training centers, etc that are relevant to BLACK PEOPLE's progressive survival and education, please forward them to me at eclecticallyblacknews@gmail.com

I will try to post them on GDW EVENT ALERT.   I am especially interested in anything that has or utilizes the principles of MARCUS GARVEY - i.e. building communities, self sufficiency, etc.  We have to get back to basics - it can't just be about resisting crazy police, or dealing with confederate flag waving fanatics.  Let's learn about owning real estate - individually and collectively; home schooling, building, running an patronizing our own businesses in the true sense of what Brother Garvey was about.  Anything about doing business in or with Africa and the Caribbean and our diasporian families throughout the world - Those are essential to our survival - we have to go global and hook up with each other.  And we have to stay locally focused as well because there are things that are happening in our back yards and to our neighbors that we cannot just ignore and shrug it off as if it does not matter.   So, I will be linking up with small locally based organizations, and those relevant churches, that are working to make a difference and post their events as well.

This is a rather long entrée into my GDW EVENT ALERT - but, at the beginning of a new year, where we don't have a clean slate, where a part of the year has already got the markings of disaster, we have to stop staring at the evil, and refocus on our own need to be the good we seek - and I am in hopes that I will be part of the process and progress going forward.  And I look forward to your feed back to tell me how I'm doing.

Stay Blessed &
ECLECTICALLY BLACK

Gloria

Happy New Year!

MILLENIALS ARE PLANNING TO MARCH
Tiana Price didn’t consider herself to be much of an activist, but in the wake of the election of Donald J. Trump,
the 20-year-old community college student is committed to fighting his policies over the next four years.
“My generation can’t be complacent,” she said. “We have to march and rally. We have to make a whole lot of noise.
And then we have to plan and be strategic.  That’s how we can honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”
On next Saturday, January 14, 2017,  Price and more than a dozen of her college-aged friends will make the
two hour trek from Richmond, Virginia to join Reverend Al Sharpton and National Action Network for the
We Shall Not Be Moved March and Rally.
“Reverend Sharpton is right. We can’t sit on the sidelines,” said Price, who is worried about potential cutbacks
to federally financial aid and voting rights. “The Black community has got to stand up and take a stand. That’s
what Dr. King would do.”
The timing of the march comes just days before Trump will be sworn in as the next commander in chief. The
push toward progress which started with Dr. King in the 1950s and 1960s and continued with the election of the
nation’s first Black president, is now under serious threat.
“We’ve got to find a way to move beyond hashtags and empty rhetoric,” said Raheem Wilson, 21, a third-year
college student. “Twitter, social media and slogans are okay, but if  we want progress, we have to put our bodies
on the line. It does not matter what era we are living in, marching does not get old.”
From Chicago to Cincinnati, thousands are making plans to be a part of this historic gathering.  Trump’s recent
cabinet picks is an indication that progressives will be engaged in a contentious fight to protect civil rights.
Marilyn D. Jones, 76, is encouraged by those who will gather outside of the National Sylvan Theater (located at Independence Avenue Southwest & 15th Street NW, Washington, DC) next Saturday for a light rally, followed by a
march from National Sylvan Theater to West Potomac Park via Independence Ave SW beginning at 11am. At noon,
she will be among those who plan to rally at West Potomac Park, directly across from the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” said Jones, who attended the March on Washington in 1963 and was among the
more than 200,000 participants who gathered on the Mall in 2013—50 years later—with Reverend Sharpton and
NAN to recommit themselves to Dr. King’s dream.
“Rain, snow, sleet or hail will not keep me from this march,” said Jones, who will be walking alongside her 19 –
year-old grandson. “Reverend Sharpton has put out the call and we will be there.”
Momentum for the march is still going strong. Reverend Sharpton held a pre-march rally at Mount Carmel Baptist
Church in Philadelphia on Thursday evening, and was joined by NAN’s Pennsylvania State leader Paula Peebles
who is organizing several buses to travel to the rally.
There is still time to get in the action. If you are interested in reserving a seat or registering a bus, please visit www.themarch2017.com and complete a brief form so that we can contact you quickly.  For questions or concerns,

How to Stop the School-to-Prison Pipeline for Girls of Color
Wednesday, January 11 at 2:00pm EST
Black girls and other girls of color disproportionately experience harsher school discipline than their peers.  According to the most recent data released by the US Department of Education, Black girls are suspended six times more often than white girls. Punitive, rather than restorative, approaches to conflict often push Black girls out of school and into the juvenile justice system. Advocates, educators, and policymakers alike are looking for solutions to address school climate and safety with an intersectional racial and gender lens.
PushoutJoin us for an exclusive webinar — part of our 25th Anniversary Celebration — as we discuss promising solutions with author and social justice scholar Dr. Monique Morris. Dr. Morris will highlight policy and system change strategies to address the issues she highlights in her groundbreaking book Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools (The New Press, 2016). She will be joined by her colleague Aishatu Yusuf to discuss the important work and research she and Dr. Morris have engaged in.
