Event Alert: 9/11 - 9/14 2014 - THAT OUGHT TO KEEP YOU BUSY!

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

Today is 9/11 - a day of mindfulness, remembrance and gratitude for all those who lost their lives during the scurrilous attacks on the World Trade Center, and America, in New York City 13 years ago.

Twin Towers Before the Attack with Statue of Liberty in Foreground

Twin Towers Shortly before Second Plane Struck

Beacon of Twin Lights Emanating from Where the Twin Towers Originally Stood

As an eye witness to the attacks from the window of my living room, I can attest to the fact that it was one of the most horrific experiences of my life - and in the lives of all those who lost loved ones. I remember running out into the streets screaming: "They're killing my city, they're killing my city!!!"
The attack on the World Trade Center was an attack on the United States, and an effort to bring down what most consider the financial, cultural, spiritual heart of America - New York City.  They thought that by attacking New York, they would cripple the economy, demoralize Americans, through terrorism.  What they found out, however, was that Americans in general, and New Yorkers, in particular, are made of sterner stuff than that.  Instead of running away from the danger, they ran to the danger to help those innocents who were trapped in the twin towers.  And the rest, as they say, is history.

In New York, Jersey City,  Washington, DC and Pennsylvania, it is even more significant and poignant because  of the many acts of courage and bravery in the face of very real and present danger.  And, while there are many fingers pointed in many directions as to who is materially responsible, this is the day that we honor those who died and have joined the ancestors, and renew the pledge to never, ever forget.  Peace Be Unto All Who Died and Blessings to All Family Members Who Continue to Live in Their Memories.

This is also the first time in New York City that any mayor other than Michael Bloomberg, has presided over the ceremonies.  Mayor Bill de Blasio will officiate for the very first time over this solemn tradition of remembrance and honor.

Stay Blessed.

ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2014 AVENGING THE ANCESTORS COALITION WILL HOST A CEREMONY AND AFRICAN LIBATION IN HONOR OF OUR ANCESTORS OF THE GERMANTOWN POTTERS FIELD.
For those of you who don't know - this was an original Burial Ground for African and African American residents of Philadelphia, who weren't allowed to be buried in white cemetaries Black in the day.  The grounds had been honored until they were desecrated by a housing project that was built on top of it nearly 50 years ago.  The building is now being demolished  to make way for other structures.  Sister Lisa Hopkins, a community activist of Liberian Heritage, has been working diligently with other community members, in negotiating with the City of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Housing Athority, to return those grounds to the sacred purpose for which they were originally intended.  And have successfully reached an agreement to not only not build on it, but to develop a commemorative park setting aside those plots.
The building is being demolished by implosion - a quick, safe and effective method for removing it without disturbing the environment and the community, and hopefully the ancestors.

A New Sci-Fi Play…
Sound Syndrome: SoHo Heartbreaker

Big Man On Campus Entertainment in association with Brooklyn Arts Exchange
presents
Sound Syndrome: SoHo Heartbreaker
An Experimental and Intimate Off-Broadway Experience
Sound Syndrome: SoHo Heartbreaker transports audiences to the not-so-distant future when a new disorder known as Sound Syndrome is beginning to plague the citizens of New York City. According to reports, Sound Syndrome begins when a victim falls into a deep coma after a traumatic event and subsequently experiences illusions stemming from sounds in their immediate surroundings. While the general public believes the disorder to be media propaganda, there is an underground group of believers who warn that Sound Syndrome is indeed real. Believers’ warnings often go unheard despite first-hand accounts of victims being taken and subjected to harsh experiments.

As news of Sound Syndrome spreads, we find a young SoHo bride-to-be named Leona in the midst of wedding planning. During a heated argument with her fiancé Marc, she learns of his affair with her best friend. The news sends Leona plunging into Sound Syndrome leaving Marc desperate to find the doctor rumored to be illegally treating victims. While Leona is lured further into a dark world with mysterious dancing masked figures, Marc must find a way to bring Leona back to reality before it is too late. The deeper Leona falls into the cacophonous fantasy, the more her life slips away. This production features the original script and score of acclaimed music producer Walter Tucker and original choreography by Aurelia Michael (featured with Atlantic Records recording artist Janelle Monáe) and a diverse cast including Miki Michelle, most recently of the Off-Broadway hit iLuminate, brings the provocative story to life.

Fireworks by Grucci to Create “Pixelated” American Flag Over Fort McHenry, MD,  with State of the Art Pyrotechnics

The explosive highlight of Baltimore’s “Star Spangled Spectacular”, the weeklong series of free events to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Francis Scott Key’s “Star Spangled Banner”, will be a pixel-by-pixel pyrotechnic display of Old Glory in the sky above Fort McHenry , a 21st century reimagining of the sights and sounds that inspired America’s National Anthem.
According to Firework’s by Grucci’s President and show designer Phil Grucci, “This performance is unlike any we’ve produced, both in terms of its emotional and patriotic resonance to its technological execution. We will employ our patented “PixelBurst-tm” technology to illuminate a massive flag in the sky above Fort McHenry. A PixelBurst-tm shell creates a single dot (pixel) in the sky.

This will be the largest fireworks show in Baltimore’s history. The fireworks performance will take place on September 13, and will be broadcast live on PBS’ Great Performances. Please visit www.starspangled200.com for further details.  (Of course the image of President Obama will not be included, but this such a great image, I couldn't resist).
