Good for What Ails You: Dr. Scott Greenberg in Cherry Hill, NJ - And The Osteo Relief Center

 By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

I have been receiving so many distress calls and emails from friends and people, either for themselves, their relatives and loved ones, friends, that I am sharing this information with you that I've been sharing with my friends for at least 8 years now.

Far too many of us are suffering  from arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure; and/or cancer and other ailments needlessly.  The sad thing is that the answer has been here under our noses all the time.  But, at the risk of making the medical industry in New York angry, it has not been in New York City.

In fact, I had to go on a quest to find help when I was nearly crippled from a car accident, that led to even more severe consequences down the line.  The solutions I received from doctors in NYC (and, no, I won't name names) was to take my knee caps and give me artificial ones.

Thanks to The Magaziner Center for Wellness, located in Cherry Hill, NJ, it turned out not to be the case.   My doctor, Scott Greenberg, kept me walking without undergoing major surgery after I was in a near death accident where a driver going 50 miles an hour in a 15 mile an hour zone, rammed my car on the driver's side, nearly forcing me to slam into a telephone pole.   Had it not been for God and his Angels, and the Mercedes I was driving, I would be mush today.  The seatbelt in my Mercedes held me so tightly in place that I didn't go flying through the windshield.   I could see my car heading toward that phone pole, but there were no brakes or steering because the impact had been so severe that all mechanicals stopped working in the car.  All I could see was the phone pole coming at me.  God's Angel whispered to me to turn off the car.  I turned the key in the ignition to off, and the car stopped less than 6 inches from that telephone pole.

I walked out of the car without a scratch on me.  People from the neighborhood crowded around me - the Mercedes was sitting there with the driver's door smashed in, all red and green fluids oozing down the street.   I felt I had experienced a miracle.  A lady who looked just like Rosa Parks brought me a chair and made me so tea, while I waited for the police to arrive.  It was so totally surreal.

After a series of X-Rays that showed nothing substantial had happened, I basically thought I was cool; that I had been a part one of those miracles you read about.  However, two months later, I woke up to find that my entire right side, from my ankle to my thigh was swollen up so much that I could barely walk; and I was in a great deal of pain.

It was then that the doctor told me that I had sustained  a level three meniscus tear in my knee, probably from jamming my feet against brakes in an effort to stop the car - and  would probably require a total knee replacement.  Not something someone who loves to dance as much as I do wants to hear.

After a second and third opinion with the same diagnosis, I decided to do some research on my own, and spent hours on the internet, before finally coming across a procedure called Prolotherapy.  Prolotherapy basically helps regenerate cartilage or re-establish the cushion that has been lost, that results in the grinding, bone on bone situation we call arthritis.  It's a procedure that had been used successfully in sports medicine, but few general practitioners or orthopedic surgeons use it.

Dr. Scott Greenberg, Magaziner For Wellness

THE MAGAZINER CENTER FOR WELLNESS:
At the time there were no doctors in New York or Northern New Jersey who practiced it.  The closest doctor, Dr. Scott Greenberg, was in Cherry Hill, NJ.  That seemed like a world away.   You know how we New Yorkers are, everything has to be at our fingertips.  And, not having a car any more, I probably would have ruled the possibility out, had I not been in so much pain.

In fact, when I finally reached him, I was in so much pain, I was standing in the middle of the street in Brooklyn, NY, literally crying because I could not walk.   I had, at that time, probably been taking about 30+ over the counter pain pills a day, trying to walk.   He told me to come down immediately, and made a space for me in that busy schedule of his - and I do mean busy, people come from all over the world to see him.

Doc Greenberg started me on Prolotherapy.  But he also put me on an aggressive weight loss program (by the time I got to him, I had picked up 60 lbs from not being able to walk.  (when I say he's holistic, I mean just that).  And within 6 weeks it was as though I had never had the accident.  The prolotherapy protocol is great, if you don't have severe injuries.

For those with more serious presenting problems, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is the next level, and far more effective. Those of you in the sports world will remember when Hines Ward was treated with it because of an injury he sustained on the field - he was back out and playing within two weeks, and won the Super Bowl as a result.  And Platelet Rich Plasma was the next intervention Dr. Greenberg used, because of the level three tear.  This procedure is excellent for mid-range problems.  And had the effect of my being able to dance, walk and climb stairs with ease again.

However, Autologus Stem Cell, where you utilize your own blood cells, along with certain precursors, is by far the best protocol for permanent regeneration of severely damaged joints and other areas. And, thanks to Bush's administration, the insurance industry, and the pharmacons, had been prohibited here in the United States - so many patients continued to go under the knife, or take massive doses of drugs to kill the pain, or walk with canes, walkers, and other artifices; rather than be healed forever with a miracle of science that is being used in every other part of the civilized world.

Since President Obama's election, Stem Cell Therapy has now been allowed here in the US, but the insurance companies still were holding it away from the general populous.  Of course, if you had deep pockets, or were self insured, or a member of Congress, you could readily take advantage of it.  And as much as Doc Greenberg liked me, he could not administer it for free either.

The effectiveness of Stem Cell Therapy has been documented over and over.  I have a classmate from Lincoln University who was suffering from severe hip problems, and was told that hip replacement was the only alternative.  I referred him to Doc Greenberg, and he is now on the mend as a result of Stem Cell protocols.

My Dr. Greenberg is an expert in this field, and has been so for quite some time. He was recently honored for his work in this arena.  I highly and emphatically recommend him for whatever your problems might be.  But for those of you with osteoarthritis, ACL issues, and other problems, before you let them cut you, go see him.  Doc Greenberg doesn't need my endorsement.  He's known around the world; but because we Black folks tend to be on the late show, I'm giving you the 411.

I should go on the record and say that they do so much more than just dealing with knees - Diabetes, Cancer, High Blood pressure, weight control - the list goes on - in fact the list is at the end of this Blog.  Many of you remember the actor, Michael Keaton, who suffered severely from Parkinsons' Disease; he is now back to normal after having undergone Stem Cell Therapy (it is hoped that my hero, Muhammad Ali, will do the same).

They're not that far from the Cherry Hill Mall.  It's amazing how many people will cheerfully go to the Mall and shop, but would consider going to a doctor who could mean the difference between life and death, too far to travel.  Go and check them out.  Instead of just praying to get well, or praying for your loved one to get well, while at the prey of insurance and pharmaceutical companies, go to a doctor whose mission it is go get you well and keep you that way.  (The great thing about Dr. Greenberg is that if he can't help you, he'll tell you up front; he won't waste your time or your money.)

But if you think health is expensive, trying being sick.  It will eat up every dollar you got.  Which is why it is so great that we now have the Affordable Care Act - a/k/a ObamaCare - to help in the quest for wellness. The Magazine Center for Wellness is located at 1907 Greentree Rd, Cherry Hill, NJ 08003,  (856) 424-8222.

Below I am including a copy of their weekly newsletter in which he discusses Stem Cell Therapy and what it does for you.  It's not just about arthritis.  We're in the 21st Century folks, the horse and buggy medical protocols are no longer viable.

OSTEO RELIEF INSTITUTE :
For those of you who do not want to travel to Cherry Hill, or are not facing the same challenges I was dealing with, I also want to give kudos to the Osteo Relief Institute in EdgeWater, NJ.  They're stone's throw from Manhattan, and, while they don't do Stem Cell Therapy (yet), they do  provide Platelet Rich Plasma, hyalagan, physical therapy and other protocols for back, knee, ankle and joint pain.   They also have a full complement of exercise machines for patients, to ensure their protocols are progressing appropriately.  They are professional, friendly, and take all forms of insurance.  They're located at 115 River Road, Suite 901, in Edgewater, NJ (201) 840-1980.  A short trip from Port Authority or the George Washington Bridge.

It's time to stop suffering and start healing.  So we can walk, dance, and run again without surgery, drugs, pain, or a cane.

Mesenchymal stem cells in joint disease and repair:

For those of us effected by osteoarthritis we know the impact it can have on quality of life. The research surrounding an effective treatment for osteoarthritis has yet to find an approved pharmacological intervention, biologic therapy or procedure that prevents the progressive destruction of the osteoarthritis joint. Stem cell injections for osteoarthritis (your own stem cells) can help maintenance healthy tissues by acting as repair cells or to reduce inflammation. The injection of Mesenchymal stem cells has produced promising outcomes in preclinical models of joint disease. (1)

Researching stem cell injections for osteoarthritis
In dealing with knee osteoarthritis, research notes that conventional treatments for osteoarthritis have demonstrated only modest clinical benefits and without cartilage repair. However, what research is also confirming is that stem cell therapies have shown encouraging results. They have confirmed feasibility and safety and strong indications of clinical efficacy were identified. Patients exhibited rapid and progressive improvement. . . “Stem Cell therapy may be a valid alternative treatment for chronic knee osteoarthritis. The intervention is simple, does not require hospitalization or surgery, provides pain relief, and significantly improves cartilage quality.” (2)

Advancements in Treating Chronic Joint Pain with Stem Cells
If you suffer from crippling, degenerative joint disease – stem cell therapy may be the breakthrough treatment you are looking for.

The Magaziner Center for Wellness has long been a recognized leader in utilizing advanced, non-surgical options for degenerative joint disease, arthritis, tendonitis, and for quick, strong repair of sports’ related injuries. This now includes Stem Cell Therapy for patients coming to our Cherry Hill, New Jersey regenerative orthopaedic center.

What is Stem Cell Therapy?
As practiced at the Magaziner Center for Wellness, Stem cells are derived from the patient. Mesenchymal stem cells are found in the bone marrow, fat, and possibly in other tissues and are responsible for rebuilding and regenerating the body.

These stem cells help the body renew and heal itself. Mesenchymal stem cells are also able to differentiate into ligaments, tendons, and cartilage, and maintain a special role in the non-surgical treatment of osteoarthritis, treatment of chronic pain, and sports injuries.

What is so promising is that that stem cells may have the potential to prevent a knee, hip, shoulder or ankle replacement or fusion, repair a torn rotator cuff or labrum, and heal a meniscus tear of the knee. Our body possesses the power of repair in the stem cell, but it often will need to be concentrated in an area of injury or chronic degeneration to be truly effective.

Symptoms associated with the following conditions possibly treated by Stem cell injections for osteoarthritis:

* Rotator cuff tendonitis                          * Biceps tendonitis
* Osteochondral defects                           * Osteochondritis dessicans
* Labral tears of the hip and shoulder     * Chronic epicondylitis (tennis and golfer’s elbow)
* Non-healing fractures                            * Osteoarthritis
* Ligament injuries                                   * Degenerative disc disease
* Sciatica                                                    * Chronic neck and back pain
* Headaches                                               * Post concussion syndrome
* TMJ                                                          * Chronic groin and hamstring strains
* avascular necrosis of the hip

Stem cell therapy is performed by extracting stem cells from the body, purifying them, and then injecting them back into the damaged area. The stem cells cannot work alone, and they require help from growth and support factors found in other tissues and blood.

We follow strict FDA guidelines in the use of stem cells, and at no time do we manipulate, expand, or grow stem cells in culture. We believe the best stem cell therapies are derived from the patient in high concentration, and placed back into the area of treatment. Manipulation and replication of stem cells in culture may inactivate these cells and may also lead to the development a of mutation that could lead to cancer. The use of the patient’s own adult stem cells, as is performed at the Magaziner Center, avoids this problem.

The area of injury or arthritis is treated with both stem cells and platelet rich plasma (PRP). If stem cells are the seeds in the lawn, PRP is the fertilizer that helps the lawn grow. PRP, a combination of growth factors and platelets naturally found in the body, provides cell signals and nourishment to help the stem cells flourish and develop into new joints, ligaments, tendons, and other body parts. PRP not only triggers stem cell development, but can also help stem cells regenerate on their own inside the body, and can also attract circulating stem cells to the area of injury. We have used PRP alone in the treatment of many injuries and pain problems.

Most cases of stem cell and PRP treatments are successful, and avoid the pain, disability, down time, and risk associated with major surgery. There is minimal recovery from a stem cell or PRP treatment, usually mediated by soreness in the area that was treated, and there is also a risk of bruising. There have been no reports of serious adverse effects in the scientific literature when adult mesenchymal stem cells are used in these procedures. Afterwards, the patient is encouraged to use the joint normally, and follow up treatments of PRP are given in monthly intervals to continue to allow the stem cells to do their work. Since stem cell treatment is very safe, it can be repeated in the joint if necessary to obtain optimal results. Also, having treatment with stem cells would not make a person ineligible for surgery.

Our treatment plan of joint injuries and chronic pain is also unique when compared to other practices. We have specialized, since 1999, in the non-surgical treatment of joint injuries, using techniques such as prolotherapy to regenerate joint tissue. As of 2010, we had performed over 45,000 of these procedures. This experience allows us to take a dual approach to joint injury with the use of stem cells and PRP to treat within the joint, and the use of prolotherapy to strengthen and regenerate the supporting structure of the joint.  Orthopedics from a holistic view  is also followed in several ways, as we look not only at the injured joint, but at where the problem originates, whether that is with a tilt in the pelvis, abnormal gait (walking cycle), spinal misalignment or, for example, with acquired weakness in the foot leading to excessive pronation and a drop in the arch.

Furthermore, the whole person is treated at the Magaziner Center, where a full discussion of diet, exercise, lifestyle, and supplementation is reviewed. We employ medical weight management programs if necessary to help take pressure off the joint. We believe a comprehensive and cohesive approach to joint injury will yield the greatest results and help to prevent surgery. We have had the opportunity to treat anyone from professional athletes to patients who have suffered for decades with chronic pain, and invite you to schedule a consultation with us to see how we can help you.
