GUEST POST - NEWSWEEK: Subject: Cuba Uses 'Wonder Drug' to Fight Coronavirus Around World Despite U.S. Sanctions

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

With so many dying and suffering under the pandemic COVID 19, there is a crying need for a cure/remedy to this.  So, you'd think it a country had such a remedy, they'd be sought after and would be receiving as much cooperation as necessary so that not one more life would be wasted  - Right?
Apparently that is not the case - at least not here in the US.  There appears to be a ban on Cuba - something that President Obama had lifted during his administration.  It's known that Cuba currently has the most advanced medical system in the Western Hemisphere.  So much so, that when Italy was suffering under the spreading pandemic, they called on Cuba to help them.

The articles were forwarded to me via two friends, Ernst Perodin and Eric Frazier - who have worked assiduously to keep us inform and to keep up our morale as well.

CUBA USES 'WONDER DRUG' TO FIGHT CORONAVIRUS
AROUND WORLD DESPITE U.S. SANCTIONS

Cuba has mobilized its medical corps around the world to distribute a new "wonder drug" that officials there say is capable of treating the new coronavirus despite the United States' strict sanctions that continue to pressure the communist-run island.

The drug, called Interferon Alpha-2B Recombinant (IFNrec), is jointly developed by scientists from Cuba and China, where the coronavirus COVID-19 disease outbreak first emerged late last year.  Already active in China since January 2020, the Cuban Medical Brigades began deploying to dozens of nations, providing personnel and products such as its new anti-viral drug to battle the disease that has exceeded 400,000 confirmed cases across the globe.  As of Tuesday [March 24, 2020], over 100,000 people have recovered from the infection and more than 18,000 have died.

Cuba first used advanced interferon techniques to treat dengue fever in the 1980s and later found success in using it to combat HIV, human papillomavirus, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and other diseases.  The use of Interferon Alpha-2B Recombinant "prevents aggravation and complications in patients reaching that stage that ultimately can result in death," Cuban biotech expert Luis Herrera Martinez said, according to a recent Yale University Press Blog feature written by the University of Glasgow's Helen Yaffe.  She called the treatment a potential "wonder drug" against the new coronavirus.

Yaffe, who recently authored a book on Cuba's post-Soviet economic experience entitled We Are Cuba!, told Newsweek that she knew of at least 15 countries that have contacted Cuba to request the drug, along with "local mayors and hospital directors who are anxious to get hold of the Cuban anti-viral to meet the crisis."  Interferon Alpha-2B Recombinant has not been approved to treat COVID-19, but has been proven effective against viruses similar to it.

It has been selected along with 30 other drugs to treat COVID-19 by China's National Health Commission.  The World Health Organization will be studying interferon-beta, along with three other drugs, to determine their effectiveness against the new coronavirus.

Cuba's ambitious anti-pandemic efforts are hindered, however, by decades-long U.S. sanctions that one Cuban official described to Newsweek as "the main obstacle not only to respond to major health crises like COVID-19, but the main obstacle to the country's development at any area."

"The lifting of the blockade against Cuba would have an extraordinarily positive impact on Cuba and mostly in the health sector, which has been one of the most damaged areas since the establishment of the blockade almost 60 years ago with more than 3 billion in economic losses," the official added.

Doctors and nurses of Cuba's Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade are bid farewell before they travel to hard-hit
Italy to help in the fight against the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, at the Central Unit of Medical Cooperation in Havana,
on March 21, 2020.  Cuba has dispatched medical personnel to dozens of countries around the world in hopes of helping to
ease a global crisis that has already killed nearly 20,000 people around the world.

The State Department has said it would offer assistance to sanctioned countries facing this new coronavirus, repeatedly mentioning Iran and North Korea but not Cuba in recent statements.  Secretary of State Mike Pompeo did, however, single out the country along with several others earlier this month while discussing the annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices that targeted Cuba over its single-party system, imprisonment of political prisoners and other abuses reported by the U.S.

"The root of the U.S. sanctions is the reality that the Castro regime uses its financial resources to abuse the Cuban people and engage in malign influence around the region, especially in Venezuela. That basic reality needs to change before any scaling back of sanctions could be discussed," a State Department spokesperson told Newsweek.
"Furthermore, the U.S. State Department has documented indicators of human trafficking in Cuba's overseas medical missions each year since the 2010 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report, including, most recently, those included in the 2019 TIP Report," the spokesperson added.  "We urge host country governments to examine the practices surrounding these programs and proactively investigate the contractual agreements associated with Cuba's medical missions in their countries."

The Cuban Foreign Ministry regularly rejects such accusations, arguing that Washington's embargo was instead the true violation of international law and highlighting Havana's humanitarian contributions.

"Despite the blockade, Cuban doctors are working in 59 countries around the world, 37 of which have confirmed cases of COVID-19," the Cuban official told Newsweek.
These countries include Latin American and Caribbean countries such as Grenada, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Suriname and Venezuela but also Italy, which has witnessed the deadliest COVID-19 outbreak to date. The disease has no veritable vaccine or cure yet, but Havana hoped to demonstrate its ability to at least alleviate health crises on an international scale.

"In addition, the world can count on more than 29,000 doctors who graduated in Cuba and who, following their training at the Latin American School of Medicine and other Cuban faculties, will do everything in their power to combat COVID-19," the official said.

At home, Cuba's experience with COVID-19 has been relatively mild. The country of roughly 11.5 million people has so far registered 40 cases and a single death as of Tuesday, according to the Cuban Ministry of Public Health.

The Cuban health sector is highly developed, a priority of Fidel Castro's mid-20th century revolution that placed the island in the spotlight of Cold War geopolitics. "Health is an issue of utmost importance for Cuba, which is why we defend the right of all human beings to receive quality medical care," the Cuban Foreign Ministry said in a statement sent to Newsweek. "Therefore, solidarity is a principle defended by Cuba and our people during more than 60 years of Revolution."

Yaffe explained to Newsweek how "a small, Caribbean island, underdeveloped by centuries of colonialism and imperialism, and subject to punitive, extraterritorial sanctions by the United States for 60 years, have so much to offer the world."

"After the Revolution of 1959, Cuba's socialist state developed a free, universal healthcare system, attaining more doctors per person than any other country in the world. This has been facilitated by free, universal access to education at all levels," she said. "The benefits are distributed globally; some 400,000 Cuban medical professionals have worked overseas in six decades, mainly in poor countries, providing healthcare that is free at the point of delivery."

Before embarking abroad on what's known officially as "collaboration missions," 400 Cuban doctors and specialists are preparing for their missions by training at the Pedro Kouri National Institute of Tropical Medicine, according to the Cuban Foreign Ministry. The Havana-based institute has been designated a health center for treating confirmed COVID-19 cases, though there were few so far at home.

The U.S., on the other hand, is set to become the country most afflicted by the coronavirus. COVID-19 cases in New York State alone exceeded 20,000 on Tuesday, with new cases said to be doubling at a rate of every three days. The U.S. has reported 46,158 confirmed cases, 583 of whom died and 35 of whom have recovered as of Tuesday.
That same day, the Navy announced that a sailor tested positive for COVID-19 while stationed at Guantanamo Bay, the U.S. military base and prison facility maintained without permission on Cuban territory.

People wear face masks as a preventive measure against the spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, in Havana, on March 24. From Tuesday, Cuba—which has so far counted 40 cases of the new coronavirus, which the government says have all been "imported"—will close its borders to tourists for a month and isolate in hotels those who remain.

President Donald Trump's administration has sought help from the international community to battle the disease. State Department officials have reportedly called on foreign aid recipients to provide critical medical supplies, and the president himself appealed to his South Korean counterpart for ventilators, according to a readout of their 23-minute call released Tuesday by the Blue House.

Washington has previously rejected Havana's offers to assist during national emergencies such as Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the city of New Orleans and surrounding areas in 2005. The Cuban official told Newsweek that, as of Monday, "no official request for help has been received" from the U.S. amid the current crisis.

Nor were there any signs of sanctions relief despite urgent pleas Tuesday from top United Nations officials.

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres called for a global ceasefire as well as the removal of all international trade barriers and restrictions in order to jointly curb the rapid spread of COVID-19. U.N. Human Rights High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet called specifically for sanctions to be lifted against Cuba, North Korea, Zimbabwe and Venezuela.

"The majority of these states have frail or weak health systems. Progress in upholding human rights is essential to improve those systems—but obstacles to the import of vital medical supplies, including over-compliance with sanctions by banks, will create long-lasting harm to vulnerable communities," Bachelet's statement read. "The populations in these countries are in no way responsible for the policies being targeted by sanctions, and to varying degrees have already been living in a precarious situation for prolonged periods."

Following a burgeoning detente under the administration of former President Barack Obama in 2015, Trump has expanded economic restrictions against Cuba. Washington has long sought regime change in Havana but now struggled to oust another leftist, U.S.-blacklisted government in Caracas, where embattled Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro continues to receive support from Cuban officials in spite of Trump's tightening sanctions on both countries since 2017.

"In the months prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cubans were already experiencing shortages of oil and basic goods, like soaps and foodstuffs, because of the tightening of the U.S. blockade," Yaffe told Newsweek.  "They were also suffering from scarcities of some of the inputs required for their world-leading biotech industry."

"This is despite the fact that almost every country in the world condemns the U.S. (unilateral and extra-territorial) blockade, evidenced by the U.N. General Assembly vote for 28 consecutive years," she added. "Now is the time to demand an end to sanctions that stop Cuba from getting access to the resources it needs to fight this deadly pandemic, both for their own population and for the global beneficiaries of Cuban medical internationalism."

Response to The BlackLists' Article: "Ebola – Open Letter to the ECOWAS presidents"

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

I'm glad someone is addressing the ECOWAS Presidents about the seeming Ebola pandemic.   For those who are not familiar, ECOWAS is the Economic Community of West African States, and is comprised of: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.

However, regardless of whether this virus is natural or man made, people are dying - a cure and preventative measures must be developed ASAP!!

My query is whether or not Africa has the appropriate research laboratories to make this happen?  Do they have the appropriate medical personnel and research technicians to bring this to fruition?  If not, then they should be partnering with Japan, not the euro-centric powers to find the cause/cure - they're more thorough.  The Cuban medical field is also a great resource - having already sent 461 doctors to Africa to help with prevent further spread of the disease and deaths, they also have very advanced medical technicians who may be instrumental in finding a cure.

Step out of the neo-colonial dependency box and begin to develop your own autonomous sources and resources.   This is the opportune time to clean up those places in Africa that harbor bacteria and viruses; begin to teach the people preventative measures, while simultaneously developing your own internal autonomous economies to support yourself without dependence or eruoamerican funding sources.

Africa has all the natural resources it needs - and some of the best educated and brightest minds, as well.  Now is the time to put them to good use.

I pray for my brothers and sisters - that they are able to stem the tide of this epidemic; but I also hope this is the beginning of the United Continent of Africa where you turn to each other and not on each other.  You've got oil, diamonds, gold, and other natural mineral, vegetable, and animal resources in abundance; you have some of the smartest people on the planet.  Stop looking at this as a matter of condemnation, and view it from an opportunity to put in place those measures that would transform Africa into a more modern, yet humane, developed, yet communalistic, continent where all our Black brothers and sisters can live, thrive and grow.

Also remember, it wasn't until England and America faced these very same kinds of pandemics that they began to clean up their communities, educate the people, develop better health measures and laws, and come up with the medical and physical preventatives to the diseases out.  Their own scientists began doing research to come up cures for polio, smallpox, chicken pox, measles, cholera and a whole host of other diseases.

Africa can do the same and develop the same measures - and better.

Ebola – Open Letter to the ECOWAS presidents  by Chinweizu

AS the spectre of Ebola stalks the world, people everywhere are looking accusingly at the ECOWAS presidents. Like the commandants from whose prison a jailbreak of very dangerous prisoners has just happened, they had better have a damned good explanation of the event or face court martial, etc. The citizens of ECOWAS demand no less. How can these presidents allow such a thing to happen on their watch and disgrace all Africans?  Aspersions of all sorts are being cast on us as incompetent to manage our countries.

Africa is being demonized as this mysterious human backwater from which strange diseases emerge to afflict the whole world. Before long it will be argued that Africa should be re-colonized by the West to protect the whole world from the deadly incompetence of its corrupt black misrulers.

Cancellation of conferences

In the meantime, the economies of ECOWAS countries are suffering. Their tourism sector has already been hit by postponement and cancellation of conferences, group tours, private visits etc. In farming villages economic activities are being disrupted as the people flee for safety.

And when the entry bans being urged in the USA and elsewhere are imposed, there will also be the cost of social disruption as family members, barred from entry into America and Europe, cannot visit one another. Students back home on vacation may not be able to return to their campuses abroad, nor will importers be able to make quick trips abroad to buy and bring in goods.

Emergency trips abroad for treatment of other ailments will be affected. Until the epidemic is ended, the economies of ECOWAS will be seriously hit and the economic and social coats will keep mounting. And the epidemic can’t be ended without knowing its causes and therefore the effective ways to combat them.

After all, if you don’t understand it you can’t fix it. I, as a concerned ECOWAS citizen— and I believe many other Africans would join me in this—therefore demand an emergency ECOWAS Summit on Ebola at which the ECOWAS presidents should set up a public and independent Commission of Enquiry comprising eminent international judges and jurists to investigate the event and find answers to some pertinent questions:

On February 18, 2006, I delivered a public lecture at Muson Centre, Lagos, titled “Lugardism, UN Imperialism and the prospect of African power.” In it I mentioned a book, published in 1997, whose title should be the starting point of discussions on how to contain and end the Ebola epidemic of 2014. It was Emerging Viruses: AIDS & Ebola – Nature, Accident or Intentional? by Dr. Len Horowitz , (Tetrahedron, LLC., 1997; ISBN:092355012-7;$29.95)

That title, from nearly twenty years ago, suggested that AIDS and Ebola may not be natural viruses, but lab-made viruses. For the purposes of investigating this Ebola epidemic, and until a better hypothesis is offered, let’s start with the hypothesis that this Ebola epidemic has been caused by a lab-made virus.

Virus epidemics
If it is a lab-made virus, then how come it is now suddenly proliferating in West Africa, in the Mano River basin countries (Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea)?  How many genetic engineering labs using recombinant technology are there in those countries? Who operates them?  That’s where, in my view, the ECOWAS Presidents should begin their inquiries if they want to protect their populations from this and similar virus epidemics in future.

Here are some of the pertinent questions to be put to the proposed ECOWAS Commission:
  • Is the Ebola virus natural or artificial, i.e. lab-made? Logically, it is either natural or artificial.
John Dramani Mahama Ghana's new President
                 President John Dramani Mahama  GHANA

Here is an editorial in The Observer (London), Sunday, October 5, 2014, telling of the first death in this epidemic: “On December 26, 2013, a two-year-old boy fell sick with a mysterious illness whose symptoms local people and medical workers had never seen before. Within two days, the boy was dead.”

This suggests that it was not something previously known in the area. Hence it could not have been naturally present or endemic in that ecosystem. If it were a natural and therefore ancient member of the ecosystem of the Mano River basin, it would have manifested there long enough before now for the local population to have developed some immunity to it and to have knowledge of it – as with malaria. Ergo, it is a recent introduction to the area. And it is probably an artificial virus.
  • If Ebola is a lab-made virus, who manufactures it?
  • Is there any patent on the Ebola virus? If so, who owns the patent?
  • Who brought the virus to the Mano River Union countries (Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea) and in sufficient quantities to infect so many as to have killed some 3000 in the ten months since that first death in December 2013?
  • Have any labs in those countries been working on Ebola?
  • If yes, who set them up and who operates them?
  • Where precisely are they located?
  • How did the virus get from the labs to the village where the boy lived?
  • Was the escape to that village accidental or intentional?
Some other intriguing questions that ECOWAS presidents should direct the Commission to investigate include:
  • Is it true that researchers from Tulane University, New Orleans, USA, have been operating in the area for about ten years under the leadership of one Dr. Robert Garry, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at Tulane University School of Medicine?
  • Have they been conducting any experimental treatments on citizens of the region (e.g., injecting monoclonal antibodies)?
  • What are the declared purposes of the Tulane University research project?
  • Do they include detecting the possible use of hemorrhagic fever viruses as bioweapons?
  • Have they also been investigating the use of monoclonal antibodies as a treatment for Lhasa fever and other viral hemorrhagic fevers?
  • If so where? On-site in Africa or outside Africa?

  • SIRLEAF
              President SIRLEAF  - LIBERIA
  • What treatments have such investigations produced for Ebola?
  • Have these treatments been made available to the Ebola victims in West Africa? And how soon after the epidemic began?
  • What precise roles have Dr. Robert Garry, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, and Dr. James Robinson, Professor of Pediatrics, been playing in this research?
  • What do Profs Garry and Robinson have to say about the origins of this epidemic?
  • What role has Corgenix Medical Corp been playing in the Tulane research?
  • What does Douglass Simpson, president of Corgenix, have to say about the origins of this epidemic?
  • Are any US Government agencies or UN agencies associated with Tulane University in this research?
  • What role has the World Health Organization been playing in the Tulane University research?
  • Who funds this Tulane University research project?
  • Is it true that the Cubans sent help before the UK and USA? If so, How come the big countries were tardy?
  • Did the governments of the affected countries (Liberia, Sierras Leone and Guinea) sign agreements permitting the research and trials in their territory?
  • Were any risk assessments done before the arrangements were agreed?
  • Were they given financial incentives/ rewards to allow the research?
  • Did they clear these arrangements with the other ECOWAS countries?
  • Are these governments in any economic arrangements with China?
  • These are 30 pertinent questions. Let an ECOWAS Commission of eminent jurists be set up, and let them help a frightened world to find and listen to the evidence.
Artificial Ebola virus
If the ECOWAS investigation upholds the hypothesis that the Ebola virus is lab-made and new to the ecosystem of the Mano River basin, then whoever they were that brought this artificial Ebola virus to West Africa are prima facie responsible for causing this epidemic.  And they have a legal and moral obligation to supply any cures they have developed and in sufficient quantities to eradicate the epidemic within a month.

The fearful citizens of ECOWAS, the fearful people of Africa, indeed the fearful people of the whole world need answers to these questions. And it is the responsibility of the ECOWAS presidents to
start providing the answers without delay.

Ebola – Open Letter to the ECOWAS presidents

There have been statements that the US has a patent on the Ebola virus - which may or may not be true.  The first epidemic of Ebola broke out over 20 years ago in parts of Africa, and either was subsequently contained, or cured - there appears to be no record of how the first outbreak started, or what stopped it.  It's time to revisit that as well.

But while Chinweizu's  30 questions are being pondered, the first and foremost concern has to be WHAT IS THE CURE, HOW DO WE GET IT; AND HOW BEST TO ADMINISTER IT TO OUR PEOPLE?
