Guest Blogger JShep We Can Do What It Takes To Progress & Survive - We Have To!

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

I have a blogger friend who goes by the name of JShep - and I love what she posts!  From time to time I will extrapolate it and share it with you, because, thus far, she's not on FaceBook -

I just recently read this and took a break from another article to share this with you.  I hope it brings both insight and action.  This was originally written in 2007 - and in the context of today's issues we've got a lot to do before lunch - and definitely a lot to do before 2016 Election.  We'd better get busy - we already blew 2014 elections which should have been used to change the tide; we're definitely looking at treason on the part of the repuglycons who think they can thwart President Obama and get away with it because we didn't do what we were supposed to do in voting their sorry asses (yes I said it - asses) out of office.
This is not as much President Obama's fight as it is ours - because we are the real targets - they are racists and we handed them the noose by which we can all be hanged.  You may not like what I'm saying, but you know - individually and collectively - that I'm telling the truth.
The ray of hope is that we are now being roused out of our torpor by such issues as Ferguson, Staten Island, Ohio, Los Angeles, Florida, North Carolina and the growing evidence of rampant racist injustice around us.  Enough to galvanize us to stand together.
There are some stirring questions that we must needs answer and begin to build a movement and a base around - immediately, if not sooner,

This is the text of the message I received - read and respond:

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen,

'Knowin' that you can't read fast...I is writing slow'...an ole saying that my family use to say.

We are so Blessed to be Alive Another Day.  If you're reading this...Holla for a brand new day.  I'll get right to the point(s).  Towards the end of this year, I'll be shifting gears.  I won't be sending out the emails to all of you, as I have for over 4 years.  I 'know' that I have provided New Information and Historical Facts.  I've learned so much along the way...and I know 'You' have too...because We All Don't Know Everything.  There are Many of us very Knowledgable about Many things...and that's a Good thing.  There are Many of Us...who are Learning things we may not have known...but Should have known.  I know that's the case for me.

We...African American Black People are in Trouble.  There's Stuff going on, as you are aware of, that's 'Not Right'...'Nor Just'.  A couple of days ago, I was speaking with my Mother (a very Wise Black Woman) about the 'murders' of Black Males and a few other things.  She said...'Black people are going to have to fix their Own Problems'.  Now, you may have thought so already...may not have thought that'...but it was the 'way' she spoke it that kind of 'grabbed me'...and I've thought about it and what that entails.  Now I've been leaning that way, any way, but...it also makes it more 'Necessary'.  You know...Our Parents (those of you Baby Boomers and a little older and a little younger) know that somewhere along the line...We dropped the ball...Didn't reach up to grab the baton...Didn't try hard enough, etc.  Not all of us...but 'just look at Our Communities...Economic Picture..School System...Ownership...Politics...etc.  We...You..I...Us have to Unite.  Others Do.  As I said before in recent email.  Our House(s) is falling down and in need of repair.  We need to "FIX It'...and 'Paint It'.  We don't have to 'back out' because we can't agree on the Color to be painted.  It Needs to be painted.  We Also need Carpenters...Painters that are Experienced...but we Need to 'Teach and Instruct' the young people how to Build and Repair Our House(s).

I want a Family Meeting....Right Away...in this city.  I want it with Members of the African American Black Family to Discuss...Resolve...Plan for 'Living' Arrangements.  We've Had Too Many Black Males Murdered and Incarcerated..Employment Arrangements..Ownership Arrangements...
Educational Arrangements...Safety Arrangements...Politic Arrangements...etc.  If there are to be, and I really hope they would, any Politicians, Pastors, Business Owners, etc to come...you leave your 'Title' outside to talk.  It's not about that right now.  This would be 'Black Man and Woman to Black Man and Woman...and How we will Survive.  However...when we get to that part of it...then put 'That Hat On'...because we'll Need to Talk to you...and have your Undivided Attention....and look forward to....Results.

Here are a few things to think about.....

-    What are the Statistics on Employment for Black People at various companies?
-    Why aren't there Black Owned and Operated Hotels and Motels in every Community?
-    Why are there Meeting Places and Rooms available in every Community
-    Why aren't there more Black Teachers in the Schools?
-    Why are the Public Schools being Closed and Torn down in Black communities?
-    Why is there always Promises for new Construction and Shopping Malls in Communities, but few, if any Black Men and Women hired to Work?
-    Why is it so Difficult to Communicate/Meet With Elected Politicians/Officials/Representatives/Servants, or have them Show UP and Speak Up..after they are elected?
-    Why is it that White people can get 'bills passed, issues addressed, changes' quickly...but more often Black People can't or have such a Hassle trying to?
-    What kind of 'Emergency Plan' do we have in place?
-    How can we have 'Food and Shelter' for those people unable to Afford it?
-    Who is Providing Information and Real Services for our Seniors?
-    Why are there so many White people over Social Agencies with Black People as recipients?
-    How is it that Black People can be on a job for years, doing the work, and along comes somebody White...that they have to train...or becomes their Supervisor?  What immediate recourse is there?
-    Why are there so many Black Males Incarcerated?
-    Why does 'One' Judge determine 'sentencing' and 'whether to hear a case'...when the Evidence proves otherwise?
-    Why aren't there more Black Men and Women going into Nursing/Medicine?  Where are they in the hospitals?
-    Why aren't there Courses given in the Schools to Prepare young people, as it was before?
These are just some of the Issues.  Even if we start getting Answers...One at a Time...these need to be Addressed.  Of course there may be other Issues and Concerns that 'You Have'.

This is Our Country.  These Are our People.  These Are Our Children.  These Are Our TAx Dollars that have and do pay for...the Schools...Teachers...Elected Servants...Police...Firemen...Street Repair...Judges.
We as African American Black People have too much vested.
Our Ancestors and Parents Paid the Price.
We're Not Going to the Back of the Bus.
We're Not Stepping Aside for 'Others' to move in the front of the line.
We're Not going to Stand by...while Others work...and We Don't.
We're Not Going to Continue to Have Our Sons and Daughters Murdered and Brutalized.
We Can't Have Our Children 'DisRespect' Us as Parents...GrandParents...Elders...Sisters and BRothers....nor will we Allow Others to.
We Can't have being Afraid to...Leave Our Houses...Go Out After Dark...Being Robbed or Burglarized...Home Invasions...Scams...Red Lining...ForeClosures, etc.
Black Women have said..'I've got to get home before dark'.  Oh No...This Can't Continue.  We Have To See To It!!!!!!!  If Not You...If Not Us...Then Who...Will Do What Has To BE Done?

This is one thing that really 'irked' and 'irks' me.  A couple of years before my Grandmother,  who was 89 years old, passed away, I had driven her somewhere for her to take care of some business.  This young white boy about 25 or so...called my grandmother by her first name...when he started talking to her.  I had to 'check' him real quick on that.  He started to tell me...he does that and she don't mind..and I said...'Don't Do That'...and I Do Mind.  Another time recently...I drove my Aunt, who is my grandmother's sister, to a specialist...and the young white girl calls her up...and starts addressing her by her first name.  Well...she went on in with her...but I had to go to the desk and request that they not do that, because she was an elderly person and needed Respect.  What are 'Young People' being taught...plus..it also should come from the 'Head' People at a company about certain Manners, Respect and Good Customer Service.

Regarding the emails that I have sent out over the years...as I have said before there are Many of You that 'Never Respond' one way or the other...about Anything.  I don't know if you're getting these...reading these...want these or what.  You know if you haven't responded.  I'm not speaking to the people who have responded to questions...or commented...or communicated with me off line.  I feel these Issues and Information concerns us All.  Maybe 'it's all good'....with you...and I hope it is.  But...one day...it just might 'happen to You or Your's.  So it 'Behooves' Us as a People...to be Concerned, Care and Work at making it better....By Any Means Necessary.

Dropped, Robbed, Had and Sentenced
I also thought about Our Mental Health. With the tides (1. tides of discontent and/or 2. A time and a season) of an ever changing landscape, in which we live, it is Crucial for Us/We, the Survivors, Descendants, Tax Payers, Loved Ones, Psychiatrists/Psychologists (Drs Alvin Poussaint, Julia & Nathan Hare, Richard King, Frances Cress Welsing, Na'im Akbar, and others), Doctors, Pastors and Others to try to Prevent, Our Black Men, Women and Youth from slipping through the ‘cracks’ and ‘open pits’ that Exist. They have been “Devoured” and are being ‘Swallowed up, right here in our Communities and throughout USA. How many Men and Women do you see walking the streets..swinging at the air..with a look of Scowl..talking to themselves, etc. Those who have ‘given up’ and ‘called it quits’ on Life, excused themselves from their Responsibilities and Obligations, committing ‘Black on Black’ crime and ‘Suicide, abandoned their Children and Families, not taking their medication, etc..and not Realizing...They were “Dropped, Robbed, Had and Sentenced”.

In the Beginning of the unwilling “Middle Passage”, We were ‘Had’ by some African Traitors, ‘Robbed’ of our Freedom, ‘Dropped’ into the waters, ‘Dropped’ in America and ‘Sentenced’ to not ever seeing our African Families left behind.
Mental Shock - Mental Torture - Only the Strong Survived

Dropped off at Plantations, We ‘Had’ to work from sun up to sun down, thus being ‘Robbed’ of our Free Will to Escape (though some did), and ‘Sentenced’ to Inhumane Conditions.
Mental Shock - Mental Torture - Only the Strong Survived

Men being ‘Robbed’ of their Manhood, Women ‘Had” by Massa, couples were ‘Robbed’ of a true Romance and Matrimony...’Sentenced’ to Guilt and Shame.
Mental Shock - Mental Torture - Only the Strong Survived

As grown Men ‘Dropped’ to their knees, Women crying out..”Lord Help Me Please”, while they ‘Had’ to let go while being ‘Robbed’ of their Child..’Sentenced’ to a life of Misery.
Mental Shock - Mental Torture - Only the Strong Survived

Fast Forward to Today...through the years of Racism, Discrimination, Segregation, Jim Crow Era, Last hired/first fired, Assimilation, Integration, Lynchings, Cross Burnings, Black Wall Street, Rosewood, Church Bombings, Protests/Rallies, Dog Bites, Affirmative Action, Riots, Racial Profiling, Police Brutality, Driving While Black, Downsizing, Out Sourcing, Red  Lining, Voter Fraud/Suppression, Health Problems, No Health Insurance, HIV/Aids, Black College Closures,Foreclosures, etc.
Mental Shock - Mental Torture - Only the Strong Survive

Over 20 years ago, (WMD’S}Weapons of Mass Destruction a.k.a. ‘Guns’ and ‘Crack Cocaine’were “Dropped” in the Black Neighborhoods to try to wipe us out. (Congresswoman Maxine Waters, a Great Warrior, waged a fierce battle to expose those responsible for unloading the genocidal Crack Destroyer) We were “Robbed” of Our Brightest Stars, like a Thief in the night. Our ‘Potentials’ (young men and women who could, would and should have been the next Dr Ben Carson, Mary McCloud Bethune, Shirley Chisolm, Marva Collins, Mayor Harold Washington, Ossie Davis, etc.) were “Had” by careless shooters, drive by shootings, crack addicted Mothers, etc. Drug Sales have escalated Gang Wars in neighborhoods, that have become Fortresses. 15..20..25 Year..Unfair Mandatory Drug “ Sentencing” has ‘Robbed’ the Life out of Our People. Grieving Parents/Relatives/Friends have been”Robbed” of their Loved Ones and “Sentenced” to a Life of Heart Break and Ache.
Mental Shock - Mental Torture - Only the Strong Survive
We have to draw a line in the sand. Life is too Precious. We All have to Do Something. Children need their Parents. The Parents need their children. We All Need Each Other. We Need Jobs, Affordable Housing, Health Coverage, Good Educational System . Seniors can not be taken Advantage of or be Afraid to walk the streets. All of this is and has been “Stressful and Unwarranted” thus Breaking the Mind and Spirit.

We Can’t Give Up on the Homeless, the Schizophrenic, the Bipolar, the Foster Care Children, Single Mothers with their children, boarded up houses, Lifeless men and women. There’s still Drugs Infecting our communities . The Residue of the Crack Epidemic (WMD) is still present in the “Village”.
While working in Los Angeles at one of the four Homeless Missions on skidrow, there were so many Black Homeless Men and Women, living in the Shelters, Living on the streets in cardboard boxes, Unclean, Some Turned Out, digging in trash cans for food, Given UP...it was pitiful. They had fallen through the ‘cracks’. They were Educated, Had Families, Fathers, Doctors, previously had good paying jobs, Veterans of Viet Nam, Home Owners, etc. More than likely...you have or had a family member ‘down and out’. We have skid rows in every inner city. But Remember..Therefore but the Grace of God go I.

Time is of the Essence!!! We Are Fam-I-Ly!! What about our 40 Acres and a Mule? REPARATIONS DUE!!!     -END

RON KARENGA CELEBRATING A FOREST FIRE OF STRUGGLE

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

Just received this epistle from Maulana Ron Karenga - his take on the Ferguson/Staten Island/police brutality pandemic that pervades our society today.  Though there are some things that I disagree with, in the main I concur with most of his statements.

Having been the founder of Kwanzaa and the annunciator of the Nguzo Saba, principles by which we should all try to live, I have a lot of respect for this great sage; as well as for my friend Bo-Keem Nyrere, who forwarded the article to me.

I'm sharing it with you, and to those of you who will be gathering later this morning to board buses to DC to show your displeasure, unity, concern about what is happening to us as a people, individually and collectively at the hands of racist cops who have literally been given a license to kill Black people; and those in the judicial system who uphold the law in the name of "just us" whites.

Travel Safely
Deliver the message
Respect President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder, because they are just as much a victim of racist whites as we are - don't get it twisted.

Stay Blessed &
ECLECTICALLY BLACK

In this Season of Celebration:
A Forest Fire of Struggle

Dr. Maulana Karenga

It is an irony and tragedy of history that as we come into this season of celebration of Christmas and Kwanzaa and of calling for peace and bringing good in the world, unfortunately, we lack the justice necessary for peace and sadly, good is sacrificed regularly on the altar of systemic violence against the vulnerable and oppressed of the world. It is a season for calling for good will and increased kindness and caring, and yet we are unwillingly caught in a context that replaces hope for harmony with hostility and needed security with a heightened sense of vulnerability and apprehension for us as Black persons and a Black people. Thus, we find ourselves demanding and looking for ways of protection against the so-called and self-defined "protectors", otherwise known as the police. And we know in our heart of hearts that there will be no relief without resistance, no change without audacious challenge, and no promising future except that fashioned and forged in righteous and relentless struggle.

Yes, in this season which brings calls for peace on earth, war ravages the world, not only in faraway countries against vulnerable peoples, but also here at home in our targeted and oppressed communities, treated as zones of occupation by militarized occupation forces known otherwise as police. And we are forced to face the hard and illusion-resistance fact that, as we said in the 60's, we might not, ourselves, be at war, but we are clearly in a war, a war against us as a people and especially against Black men. It is what is called a "low-intensity" war and dishonestly justified by a racialized and racist reasoning which racializes crime and then criminalizes a whole race, an entire people. Having criminalized the race, they can be killed under the color and camouflage of law which is reinforced by pervasive social sanction.
And this, of course, as Malcolm taught, turns the victims into criminals and the criminals into victims, the dead into demons and the killers into demon slayers, pretending to be frightened and forced to defend themselves. Even in earlier times, we as a people had hoped for and expected more from America, and in a time which now seems so long ago, most of us saw a new opening and opportunity in the campaign and election of President Barack Obama. But we soon were relieved of our most outrageous illusions about racial justice, social change, shared power and the possibility of a new America simply through elections.

For his rightwing enemies fell on all four in their attempts to discredit, block and defeat him. His party and progressive allies lent only the silence of lambs and the self-camouflage of chameleons. And Obama, himself, "went patriot", praised his problematic and self-congratulatory country, courted his enemies, and implemented many of their policies and had the "audacity" to attempt to lecture his most faithful supporters. But Anna Julia Cooper had told us we can never imagine that the elevation of one man counts or substitutes for the elevation of a people, and that the whole people, women and men, as well as children, must benefit from any claim to progress or an upward and forward social thrust.

There are faint hints President Obama has, in part, at least now, seen a light cast across the horizons of history by the fires of struggle in Ferguson that have spread all over the country. But we all know again that without a Movement to make demands, educate, mobilize and organize the masses of our people and others, and sustain the struggle, all concessions by the established order are tactical, all promises ephemeral, and all gains subject to reduction and reversal at the opportune time. It is a fundamental Kawaida teaching that one spark in the right season and under the right conditions can set a whole forest on fire. The struggle in Ferguson is that spark in a season of rightful anger after a long history of police and general systemic violence and oppression. But the conditions for this spark to become that forest fire of radical, even revolutionary, change that Malcolm prophesized and promised can only come from a self-conscious and sustained Movement rooted in righteous and relentless struggle.

And so here we are again, at still another critical juncture in the history of our people and this country, struggling to secure the most basic of human rights for Black men and boys and Black people as a whole: the right to life, to security of person and the right of presence. Here it is important to understand that the right to life and all these other related rights are rights of actual persons and a people. If Black life and lives are to matter, to have meaning and value, then this meme and principle must take concrete form in the respect, protection, well-being, fulfillment and flourishing of the people themselves, Black people. Moreover, it is important to reaffirm the dignity and rights of Black people, the sacredness of their lives, the rightfulness of their need to have the capacity and conditions to live free, secure, good and flourishing lives without constant threats and practices of varied forms of violence by the police and the larger system.

To build a Movement and set a forest fire of radical and revolutionary change, we must, as I've said elsewhere, begin by holding our ground, building and expanding our gains and pushing the battlelines and lives of our people constantly forward. And pushing our battlelines forward means expanding our concerns and struggle for Black people themselves, so that our arc of engagement includes not only resistance to police violence, but also involves struggle against systemic violence as a whole and struggle for the creation of the capacity and conditions to free ourselves, be ourselves, and build with others the just, good and sustainable society and world we all want and deserve to live in.

This also means, above all, staying united and in motion and practicing self-determination in all that is planned and pursued. Indeed, as we've said before, there is no substitute for an aware, organized and engaged people, constantly involved in a multiplicity of actions to define, defend and promote their interests with rightful attention to the interest of others and the world. A historic spark has set a city named Ferguson on fire and the question is: will a Movement emerge to become the forest fire that Malcolm counselled could and would engulf and righteously transform the country as well as ourselves? And as Malcolm reminds us in his deference to history and commitment to struggle, surely-"Time will tell".

Video: Police lied. Mike Brown was killed 148 feet away from Darren Wilson's SUV - YOU DO THE MATH!!! NAN to Rally

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All!

The following needs absolutely no conversation or introduction - it speaks for itself - I just wanted to go on record and say what we have all known from the beginning: DARREN WILSON AND THE FERGUSON POLICE DEPARTMENT LIED ABOUT THE GUNNING DOWN OF MIKE BROWN!!!

As an aside, I met his parents in Washington, DC during the Congressional Black Caucus, at the New Washington DC Marriott Marquis Hotel, where they were honored by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for their bravery.  His parents, both wonderful and gracious under the circumstances, have wisely taken this to the International Arena of the United Nations for crimes against humanity.  I applaud and respect them for taking this stance.  It's what Malcolm X had tried to do in "We Charge Genocide" when he was gunned down by agent provacateurs who then tried to blame it on Elijah Muhammad and Min. Farrakhan.

As it has been made patently clear, it is still happening in egregiously increasing numbers at the hands of so called law enforcement officers who have declared open season on Black people, and then try to use any bogus excuse for their actions, under the misconception that it is their word as whites against ours as Black people.  And as Malcolm said: AIN'T NO MORE DAYS LIKE THAT!

For 104 days, the police have lied and said Mike Brown was killed 35 feet away from Darren Wilson's SUV. It was actually 148 feet.
This distance is essential to the defense and how Darren Wilson must demonstrate that he "reasonably feared for his safety." At the point in which Mike Brown ran half a football field away, how reasonable is it for an armed officer to fear anyone?
On the afternoon of August 9, 2014, Officer Darren Wilson shot and killed Mike Brown, an unarmed teenager, in Ferguson, Missouri. Below is the first video filmed from Canfield Drive, where the shooting occurred, showing the exact measurement between where Darren Wilson's SUV was parked and Mike Brown died. After that, we methodically debunk the lie that Mike Brown was killed in close proximity to Darren Wilson's SUV.
Our starting point, which is 17 feet behind the driver's side window of Darren Wilson's SUV, is this yellow fire hydrant next to the storm drain.

Our end point is 2943 Canfield. Notice the building number in the back of this photo below where Mike Brown's father and family members are standing over the exact location where Mike Brown was killed.
Mike Brown's family at 2943 on Canfield at the exact spot of Mike Brown's death
Watch us measure the distance below.
So: 131 feet, 1 inch (distance between the fire hydrant and where Mike Brown died), + 17 feet (distance between the fire hydrant and the driver's side door of Darren Wilson's SUV) = 148 feet. The St. Louis-area police have continued to advance this lie for over 104 days since Mike Brown was killed on Canfield Drive on the afternoon of August 9 in Ferguson, Missouri. Here we will methodically expose this lie and examine just why it's so important.
On this past Monday, Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency in Missouri in anticipation of some level of unrest regarding a decision from the grand jury in the Darren Wilson case. Covering this decision, and the case in general, CNN authoritatively states that Mike Brown was found 35 feet away from Darren Wilson's SUV. Watch just the first 20 seconds of this video to see how Erin Burnett frames the case,
Where the Lie Began On August 10, 2014, St. Louis County Police Chief John Belmar held his first press conference on the shooting of Mike Brown by Officer Darren Wilson of the nearby Ferguson Police Department. His force had been called in to take over the investigation for the much smaller local department. The shooting had occurred less than 24 hours earlier, and the tensions on the ground in Ferguson were already red hot and boiling over.
Six different witnesses on the scene claimed that Mike Brown was shot at repeatedly from behind before he turned around, faced Darren Wilson, verbally surrendered, and put his hands in the air. Wilson, having already shot at Mike Brown at least six times while he fled, then fired off a barrage of four quick shots at the surrendered Brown he was looking at face to face, killing him on the spot. With his lifeless body face down on the road, Mike Brown’s blood literally flowed down Canfield Drive for more than four hours. The shooting and the aftermath that evening, which included bringing police dogs to the scene, infuriated residents as never before, and the anger was spreading rapidly across St. Louis and into the nation.
When Chief Belmar sat down the next day to brief the press on his summary of the facts, he stated at 1:13 (and then even more emphatically at 6:01) in the video below, "The entire scene, from approximately the car door (of Officer Wilson) to the shooting, is, uh, about 35 feet."
See his video below and pay attention to the statements at 1:13 & 6:01.
At that time, when the chief said the "entire scene" was just 35 feet in distance from the "car door to the shooting," every observer accepted it as a negligible fact and thought little about it, instead zeroing in on why Darren Wilson stopped Mike Brown in the first place and why a police officer would shoot a young man who was surrendering with his hands up. It turns, out, though, that the distance Mike Brown fled was not 35 feet, as was stated in the press conference and cited in hundreds of articles since. Nor was it 45 feet, or 75 feet, or even 95 feet, but approximately 148 feet away from Darren Wilson’s SUV. Below, you will find photos from the day of the murder, maps, infographics, and more to confirm for you that the distance was more 500 percent farther away than originally claimed by Chief Belmar and subsequently quoted as fact in almost every narrative of the case.
While the initial reporting of this distance from the chief could have been an error, albeit an egregious one, it seems clear now, after over 100 days of requests for the police to clarify this discrepancy have only produced silence, that it wasn’t an oversight, but a deliberate misrepresentation of the facts.
What reason would the chief have for so seriously understating the distance by more than 110 feet? Well, how far Mike Brown fled matters greatly, and the St. Louis County Police Department could have many reasons for purposely understating it. One doubts, though, that they expected to be caught telling this lie. When it was first told, while matters were tense in St. Louis and spreading on social media, nobody had any idea that this case would grip the nation and the world.
Without even using this space to dive into the actual shooting of Mike Brown, it appears that some base level misconduct can be suspected when the St. Louis County Police Department has repeatedly refused to address the discrepancy in distance.
When the police came out the morning after Mike Brown was killed and deliberately included the distance between the SUV and the shooting, it successfully created a very particular narrative. The arc of their initial story, magnified in importance by the absence of even one official report, is that Darren Wilson shot and killed a young man who, in a short distance from the SUV, posed him grave harm. How far Mike Brown actually fled, how far Darren Wilson chased him, and where each of them were in relation to each other and to the SUV, are facts of paramount importance. If Mike Brown fled over 148 feet away from Darren Wilson, it clearly suggests that Brown—unarmed, shot, missing a shoe, in lounge clothes—feared for his life and not the other way around.
Furthermore, police, in many cases, use the distance in which a suspect flees and the distance between them in an encounter as evidence to prove they were reasonably afraid for their safety—which is required by law.
What follows is evidence to the contrary. Mike Brown fled at least 148 feet away from Darren Wilson's SUV. If the police will lie about this fact, what else have they openly lied about? Did they present this false distance to the grand jury? Why does the media continue to advance this lie? Here are the facts.

Here is a rarely seen panorama of Canfield Drive moments after Mike Brown was killed. Few images better display that the distance was not a very short 35 feet than this one.

This is Darren Wilson's SUV. Where you see it here is exactly where he parked it to confront Mike Brown and Dorian Johnson for jaywalking. Out of sight in this image, to the left of the driver's side door, is Mike Brown's hat (shown in a later image below). Approximately 16 feet behind the SUV is Mike Brown's black sandal, which came off while he was running. Please notice the fire hydrant to the right of the SUV.

On the center left is Darren Wilson's SUV from the opposite angle. Notice the two orange cones next to the driver's side door. That's Mike Brown's red St. Louis Cardinals hat next to it.

Using this image, let's create starting line A. As effective landmarks, please notice the fire hydrant on the right and the sloping entrance into the apartments.
From the back of Darren Wilson's SUV, Brown fled over 131 feet down Canfield Drive. The exact location where Brown died is today marked by a memorial in the middle of the street.

This is ending line B. Mike Brown is the blurred figure on the ground. That is Darren Wilson, visibly uninjured in every image of him from that day, standing to the right. According to eyewitnesses Dorian Johnson, Tiffany Mitchell, and Piaget Crenshaw, Mike Brown turned around, faced Darren Wilson and his SUV, and put his hands in the air.

Using Google Maps, the approximate distance from the front of Darren Wilson's SUV to where Mike Brown was shot before falling down is actually 148 feet.
(Thank you to Argus News for measuring and filming the measurement of the distance.)

Now that you know, what are you going to do about it?  The National Action Network (NAN) has released a list of national protest sites - which is growing even as I write this:

Rev. Al Sharpton spoke at Mike Brown’s funeral.

Al Sharpton’s National Action Network released its list of national protest sites across the US following the St. Louis County grand jury decision on the Mike Brown case is announced.
The New York Times reported that Obama met with Ferguson protesters on November 5th and urged them to “stay the course.”
NATIONAL ACTION NETWOK(sp) (NAN) CHAPTERS TO MEET AT FEDERAL COURTHOUSES ACROSS THE COUNTRY WHEN THE FERGUSON GRAND JURY DECISION IS ANNOUNCED
November 19, 2014 (New York, NY) — In anticipation of the impending grand jury decision in Ferguson, MO, National Action Network (NAN) Chapters are encouraging community members to join them when it is announced. Regardless of what the decision is, NAN chapters in over 20 cities around the country will gather. If the decision is to indict Officer Darren Wilson, they will focus on what would be a teaching moment on how to deal with national legislation for policing. Moving forward they would also focus on how they can prepare for the trial. If the Ferguson grand jury decision clears him of criminal charges then NAN will call for protests to remain peaceful and for the federal government to come in with a federal grand jury to move for civil rights charges on excessive force. NAN will continue to also call for federal intervention in cases such as Eric Garner in Staten Island, NY.

EVENT ALERT: TOWN HALL: Ferguson and Beyond (LIVE WEBCAST AUG 27 6:30PM EST/ 5:30 CST)

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

STAY BLESSED

I am sure the police and the rednecks and repuglycons of Ferguson and the rest of the world would like to think that now that Michael Brown's funeral is over, things can go back to business as usual.  But, ain't no mo days like that!  The world has been galvanized, and this will not end until justice has been served, the police attack/assault mode against Black and Brown brothers and sisters has been reigned in, and the perpetators have been punished.

There has been a lot of complaining on the part of the repuglycons, who were clearly upset to find that people who attended Michael Ferguson's funeral also registered to vote while there.  Well, they can expect to see a lot more Black and Brown people registering as they prepare to make sure that there are no more situations such as have existed in the community of Ferguson, where the Blacks are in the majority, but the whites are running the show, riding roughshod over them with impunity.

No more CYA (cover your ass) lies, where they keep telling one after another to see which one is going to finally be believed. No more low wages, high taxes, and under representation in the major positions that matter - Police, city government, education, etc.  Ferguson's paradigm shift is going into high gear and taking other Black communities along with it.

And while Attorney General Eric Holder, President Obama, and Rev. Sharpton are playing their roles in this, there is something that we, ourselves, must do as well.  Because, no one can do our doing for us. There is an old African proverb that says: "If the people will lead, the leaders will follow."  We it's time for WE, THE PEOPLE to lead.

Below is an invitation to be part of a livestreamed town hall meeting coordinated by the Institute of the  Black World 21st Century.  Take some time out to sit down and catch up with what others are doing in our behalf.  Be prepared to replicate some of the strategies in your own communities.

I truly hope it doesn't take a similar wake up call, such as the one tragically endured by Ferguson, Staten Island, Los Angeles, Florida, and other major communities where Black people are disrespected by Police on a regular basis, to get our act together and make sure that we obtain and maintain the balance of power - we do this through out votes; we do this through uniting our communities, from those next door, to those across the street and around the block; to those across the city, the state, the nation.

It's our wake up call - if you snooze you lose.  We can't afford to be on the late show.  Pass this information on - make it viral and make it your business to tune in.  If no one else will save you - save yourself.

Stay Blessed &
