Saying Farewell to Dr. Ben

Hello All:

It's been said you never get out of this life alive.  But Dr. Yosef Ben-Jochannan might just be the exception to that rule, because he lives on through his work and so many of the lives he touch through his teachings, his sojourns to Egypt, his appearances on Like It Is with Gil Noble, and his many books on the history of Black people.

DR. YOSEF BEN-JOCHANNAN - DR. BEN 1918 - 2015 REST IN POWER

Some say he was an Egyptologist.  I think that's part of who he was.  He was much more than that - he was a philosopher, a behavior modification expert - for how could you behave badly after you learn that you come from kings and queens; he was wise teacher - because he made his information palatable and understandable to people at various educational levels.  He was a mesmerizer - because he could hold the attention of hundreds of  people who would listen intently for hours without saying a word while he unraveled the mysteries of Black history through Egypt and Africa.   And he must have been quite a lady's man, because he was married three times and had thirteen children - that doesn't happen unless you know how to treat a woman and have a love of family - your own, and the extended family of the Black African Diaspora.

In saying farewell to Dr. Ben, we also express our love and appreciation for his tireless energy and devotion  to introducing us to who we were, who we are, and who we could yet become if we but followed his advice and teachings.

There were many who did - who were privileged to sit at his feet and soak up the great banks of knowledge that poured forth from this great man of wisdom.  Dr. Ben, who was originally from Ethiopia, of Ethiopian and Puerto-Rican parentage brought with him such a wealth of wisdom, knowledge and understanding, that many eurocentric intellectuals who had been brainwashed and indoctrinated in the great schools of caucasian propaganda and philosophy could not believe what he was saying.  How could it be that the basic religions that they were all taught to revere originated in the Cradle of Africa; how could it be that the original Egyptians were BLACK? not eurowhite.  How was it that the original Jews were Black, not the eurocentric interlopers that we are so much more familiar with now.  How is it that the Pyramids, the Sphinx and all the other great monuments were constructed by Black hands, and not some creature from out of space as Daniken tried to convince them (remember that dumb commercial they used to run on TV in the 70's?)  What?

The fact that he went to Non-white universities and institutions of higher learning to obtain his degree caused them to look askance at this great brother of knowledge - but, try as they might, they could dispute, but could not disprove his information.

Dr. Ben literally carried Black people from the US to  tour Egypt twice a year on a sojourn to reacquaint them with who they were really were - for, though Hitler tried, he could not destroy the Black features and characteristics of the Sphinx, Anknaton, Pharoahs, Isis, Osiris, all the hieroglyphs, artwork, and evidence of our genius and ingenuity still remain for those of the modern day world to witness and rejoice.

The only thing running the ignorant, envious subconscious euro-minds was how did this little dark man with the thick accent become so smart; how did he learn so much; how dare he stand up to all of us who represent the bastions of whiteness to the nth degree???  Lefkowitz found out that Dr. Ben was neither intimidated nor impressed by him. 

All I know was what a pleasure it was to sit with this man and listen to him as he held forth on all the wonderful things we had wrought as a people.  It was a double pleasure when he and Dr. John Henrik Clarke got together.  It's like being in Black History Heaven.

2 GIANTS OF BLACK HISTORY - JOHN HENRIK CLARKE AND DR. YOSEF BEN-JOCHANNAN

Imagine this scenario:  You've now got Ivan Van Sertima, John Hope Franklin, Leopold Sedar Senghor, Cheikh Anta Diop, Franz Fanon, John Henrik Clarke, Dr. Yosef Ben-Jocannan, Frederick Douglass, Carter G. Woodson, Elombe Brath, Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, W.E.B. DuBois, and Marcus Garvey all sitting around being interviewed by Gil Noble and Gus Henningberg!!! Wow - that would be a panel and a half.  Now, if we Black men and women and children could, by osmosis, soak up all that collective knowledge; integrate all that wealth of knowledge into our physical, spiritual, mental, emotional beings - if we could consolidate that information into a serious action plan for the education and redemption and empowerment of Black people, we would be heading up at least three states of our own, established or expanded the HBCUs, our children would be the new level of "wizkids" and we'd finally break the shackles off our brains with just the mental muscle power of higher Black thought.

Well, you can almost say that we've come to the end of an era - the passing of Dr. Yosef Ben-Jochannan marks the last of a long and blessed period of wise Black men who were sent here by our ancestors to be the beacon of truth in a mountain of lies.  And, fortunately for us, while Dr. Ben has made his transition to the ancestor angels, we still have one wonderful voice in the wilderness of Mis-education and deception, who is still carrying high the torch of truth - DR. CHARLES BLOCKSON, in Philadelphia - while in his 80s is still telling it like it is - the mantle, then has to be passed on to him.  His body of work is on display at Temple University at Pollett Walk - a man much inspired by the great men already mentioned, Dr. Blockson is as passionate about Black people knowing and honoring their history as Dr. Ben was - he would have been considered "a kid" by the pantheon of scholars just mentioned.

Knowing that you can never know everything about Black history or Black people, I am in the process of re-reading and re-learning what I've learned from these great men - there has been so much that has been obscured by modernistic BS ersatz pseudo education - and one must go back for a deepening of principles - or one will find oneself walking around talking like some the Hollywierd melanites  (you used to call them Oreos) who've made it big and are now honorary "white."

Dr. Ben has certainly left a treasuretrove of books and videos to tap into so that if you didn't have the pleasure, you can most definitely avail yourself of those immediately if not sooner.  It would be wonderful to find that at least one of his thirteen children - if not all of them - are carrying forward their father's illustrious work.  What a wonderful tribute to him as a man and a scholar it would be. 

The last time I saw Dr. Ben was at Sylvia's Queen of Soul Food Restaurant in Harlem.  We was with a mutual friend, musical artist Onaje Alan Gumbs, who frequently went to visit him and take him out.  He love the restaurant, and the people there loved him and came over to wish him well on such a regular basis we finally had to request that he be allowed to eat in peace.  That was a measure of how well loved Dr. Ben was in our community. 

Many a forum held at the Harriet Tubman school had one leaving promising him or herself to go home and immediately look up that information; or with a resolve to never make a negative statement about Black people and our heritage again.  The level of clarity Dr. Ben left you with was kind of like the sun pouring in through heavy grey clouds. 

Dr. Ben educated people where ever he found them 7 years at Malcolm/King University in Harlem; 15 years at Cornell; and more than 60 years in Harlem in churches, schools, living rooms, as well as 50 years in Egypt.  But he was no dictator - or a fanatic - he gave you the information, gave you the proof, by you had the responsibility of inculcating it or not.  Some of us have done better than others; some never got it.  Some never heard it.  Some of us have forgotten it.  But it could never be said that he didn't share his wealth of knowledge freely with his brothers and sisters; he did not hoard it for monetary or some sort of elitist personal gain.  Knowledge not shared is useless.  And Dr. Ben loved his people too much to let them go through life ignorant.

We are coming together next week, April 9th and 10th to bid Dr. Ben's spirit farewell - but we know he hasn't gone far from us because there is still so much more for us to learn, be, do, have.  He's given us some awesome resources to work with - coupled with our minds and intelligence, I know we're going to make him proud.  We can do great things!

A Black Man Responds to a White Woman's Letter Alleging the Black Men Prefer White Women over Black Women

I just want to thank the brother who wrote this wonderful tribute to Black Women - and truly hope you find the love of your life in a beautiful, deep dark chocolate sister who is smart, sweet, loving, sincere, sexy, spiritual, whole, harmonious, fun,  perfect (for you), and complete - and that you be a blessing to and for each other, and enjoy a long, loving successful marriage like Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, Will and Jada Smith, Barack and Michelle Obama, Ruby and Warner Dulan (my parents), Silas and Zady Dulan (my grandparents - 63 years). 

I am posting this on my blog www.gloriadulanwilson.blogspot.com/ECLECTICALLY BLACK NEWS; sharing it on FaceBook, and emailing it to my friends - in hopes thy will likewise email it or share in some way with both their sons and daughters - as well as a few "old heads" who have left the tribe. 

Let me set the record straight on something the "white woman" said in her statement:  Berry Gordy's wife is not white - she is Brazilian and Black; Larry Fishburne's wife is Latina (Black) - don't get it twisted - it's still 1 tenth of one% of Black Blood that makes you Black - Black Blood is the most powerful blood on the planet.  It has the power to change everything with just one drop - don't let the pigmentation and hair grade fool you - there used to be a penchant for light skinned Black women to pass for white - some of the men did it too.  But Brazil - a country that is 80% African Blooded heritage - do the math. 

I've long since lost concern about Black men who marry white women - It's no longer my concern - I admit it used to infuriate me, until I deliberately went after a guy who was involved with a white woman. I was determined that he was too handsome, smart and powerful to be involved with her, so I took him - literally.  I "won."  And wow, what a mistake that was - sometimes people are where they are and who they are because of their mentality.  We made it for a short while, long enough for me to realize that that brother needed to be right where he was - he didn't or wouldn't work; he had no real interests or ambitions - he was just "handsome" - he talked a good game, but would not or could not walk in talk   Just like Black men like a strong Black women, we, too, like a strong, intelligent, resourceful, active Black man - we support each other - which is OKAY - but for me to carry him?  Not! Sent right back to Helga - where they lived happily ever after. 

I come from a family of FINE BLACK MEN - they're not just fine in terms of their good looks, but because they are educated, work hard, play hard, love hard, are spiritual, intellectual, proud of their Blackness, loyal to and supportive of their families.  My Dad, Granddads, Brother, Uncles, Cousins, handsome Son and handsome Son-In-Law = all FINE BLACK MEN - you know them when you see them.  I'm proud to know the difference between a playboy and a real man - and proud to have had the privilege of having wonderful, real Black men in my life. 

There are, I am sure, a great many sisters and brothers who can say the same.  So we need to make this a MUTUAL ADMIRATION SOCIETY.  Give each other kudos, props, respect, love, and support.

This article was written in Sister2Sister Magazine by a white woman who explained her attraction to Black men.  She also explained why Black men are likely to choose women like her over Black women.  After the letter was written, a Black male gave his response.  The initial letter and response are both listed below:

Dear Jamie: I’m sorry but I would like to challenge some of your Black male readers. I am a White female who is engaged to a Black male-good-looking, educated and loving. I just don’t understand a lot of Black female’s attitudes about our relationship. My man decided he wanted me because the pickings amongst Black women were slim to none. As he said they were either too fat, too loud, too mean, too argumentative, too needy, too materialistic or carrying too much excess baggage. Before I became engaged, whenever I went out I was constantly approached by Black men, willing to wine and dine me and give me the world. If Black women are so up in arms about us being with their men, why don’t they look at themselves and make some changes. I am tired of the dirty looks I get and snide remarks when we’re out in public. I would like to hear from some Black men about why we are so appealing and coveted by them. Bryant Gumbel just left his wife of 26 years for one of us Charles Barkley, Scottie Pippen, the model Tyson Beckford, Montell Williams, Quincy Jones, James Earl Jones, Harry Belafonte, Sydney Poitier, Kofi Anan, Cuba Gooding Jr., Don Cornelius, Berry Gordy, Billy Blanks, Larry Fishburne, Wesley Snipes… I could go on and on. But, right now, I’m a little angry and that is why I wrote this so hurriedly. Don’t be mad with us White women because so many of your men want us. Dear Jamie: I would like to respond to the letter written by A Disgusted White Girl. Let me start by saying that I am a 28-year old Black man. I graduated from one of the most prestigious universities in Atlanta, Georgia with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management. I have a good job at a major corporation and have recently purchased a house. So, I consider myself to be among the ranks of successful Black men. I will not use my precious time to slander white people. I just want to set the record straight of why Black men date white women. Back in the day, one of the biggest reasons why Black men dated white women was because they were considered easy. The Black girls in my neighborhood were raised in the church. They were very strict about when they lost their virginity and who they lost it to. Because of our impatience to wait, Brothers would look for someone who would give it up easy without too much hassle. So, they turned to the white girls. Nowadays, in my opinion, a lot of Brothers date white women because they are docile and easy to control. A lot of Black men, because of insecurities, fears, and overall weaknesses, have become intimidated by the strength of our Black women. We are afraid that our woman will be more successful than us, make more money than us, drive nicer cars and own bigger houses.

Because of this fear, many Black men look for a more docile woman. Someone we can control. I have talked to numerous Black men and they continuously comment on how easy it is to control and walk over their white women. I just want to set the record straight. I want A Disgusted White Girl to know that not all successful Black men date white women. Brothers like Ahmad Rashad, Denzel Washington, Michael Jordan, Morris Chestnut, Will Smith, Blair Underwood, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Chris Rock all married strong Black women And, to flip the script, there are numerous white men, in and out of the spot light, who openly or secretly desire Black women over white women. Ted Danson, Robert DeNiro, and David Bowie to name a few. I just don’t want a disgusted white girl to be misinformed Stop thinking that because you are white that you are some type of goddess. Remember, when Black Egyptian Queens like Hatsepshut and Nitorcris were ruling Dynasties and armies of men in Egypt, you were over in the caves of Europe eating raw meat and beating each other over the head with clubs.

Read your history! It was the Black woman that taught you how to cook and season your food. It was the Black woman that taught you how to raise your children. It was Black women who were breast feeding and raising your babies during slavery. It is the Black woman that had to endure watching their fathers, husbands, and children beaten, killed, and thrown in jail. Black women were born with two strikes against them: being Black and being a woman. And, through all this, Still They Rise! It is because of the Black women’s strength, elegance, power, love and beauty that I could> never> date anyone except my Black Queen. It is not just the outer beauty that captivates and draws me to them. It is not the fact that they come in all shapes, sizes, colors and shades that I love them. Their inner beauty is what I find most appealing about Black women. Their strong spirit, loving and nurturing souls, their integrity, their ability to overcome great obstacles, their willingness to stand for what they believe in, and their determination to succeed and reach their highest potential while enduring great pain and suffering is why I have fallen in love with black women. I honestly believe that your anger is geared more toward jealousy and envy more so than snotty looks. If this were not so, then why do you continuously go to tanning salons to darken your skin? If you are so proud to be white, then why don’t you just be happy with your pale skin? Why do you continue to inject your lips, hips, and breasts with unnatural and dangerous substances so you can look fuller and more voluptuous? I think that your anger is really a result of you wanting to have what the Black woman has.

BOTTOM LINE: If I were looking for a docile woman, someone I can walk over and control, I would give you a call. But, unfortunately, I am looking for a Virtuous Woman. Someone that can be a good wife and mother to my children. Someone who can be my best friend and understands my struggles. I am looking for a soul mate. I am looking for a sister and; unfortunately, you do not and CANNOT fit the bill. No offense taken, none given. Signed, Black Royalty Wow!! We must pass this on to make the day of the Black Queens and remind our Black Kings of what they have Old..! 

This indeed was a great letter.  And, again I applaud the brother who wrote it.  And to my Black sisters, be yourselves, be proud of who you are, wear your natural beauty and show your wonder talents and creativity - don't imitate the imitators.
