AARP Raises Funds For Suffering Senior Citizens - Your Donations are Needed

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

AARP is being pro-active in helping senior citizens who are in crises.  And I wanted to do my part by posting their solicitation on my Blog.

We've been left in a major trick bag, thanks to the Bush Administration's wrecking of the economy; the fact that the Repuglycons are trying to rob Social Security of it's funds and the promise made to Americans nearly 80 years ago by a president who knew he was responsible to human beings, not corporations.

So, if you have it to give, please share it - there is a timeline for this - and the person you help may be your neighbor, your mother or yourself.

We're all - at least most of us - one paycheck away from disaster right now!!

Stay Blessed
Gloria

Since I wrote to you last, I've heard from so many generous people who are ready to help seniors struggling to meet their basic needs. Supporters across the country have shown us that they won't sit idly by while older Americans suffer. But we're still short of our goal of 3,000 supporters -- and we haven't heard from you yet.
There are just hours left for you to make your gift. Right now, UnitedHealthcare is matching all individual donations dollar-for-dollar up to a total of $500,000 -- think of what a difference that could make for older adults who are dealing with issues of hunger, housing, income, and isolation.
Millions of older Americans are counting on your support -- please take a moment to read my message below and make your gift of $10 today to help seniors in need!

Time is running out -- help us meet our goal!
Goal: 3,000 donors
Dear Gloria,
"Is there any hope for somebody my age?"
This is the question we get over and over again at AARP Foundation -- we're so proud to be able to say "Yes!" and help seniors in crisis. But as millions of Americans face issues with hunger, housing, income, and isolation every day, we know we need to do more.
Right now, you have a special opportunity to help us reach vulnerable older Americans. UnitedHealthcare has generously offered to match every gift dollar-for-dollar, up to a total of $500,000!
But we're still trying to reach 3,000 supporters to take full advantage of this offer.
Every year, AARP Foundation helps millions of older Americans, giving them the resources and skills to meet their basic needs and providing hope for the future. Together, we have:
  • Helped seniors -- including a veteran with two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star -- get access to healthy food through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Given older adults on the brink of foreclosure the knowledge and expertise necessary to keep their homes
  • Connected seniors with job training and placement programs through the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) so they can once again buy groceries, pay their bills, and have rewarding careers
…and more. Each time we extend a helping hand, we're building a better world where seniors can live their best lives instead of struggling just to get by. But there are still millions of older Americans who need access to AARP Foundation's life-changing programs.
Will you help us reach them, Gloria? The generous offer from UnitedHealthcare to match gifts up to our total of $500,000 means that we can put a combined total of $1 million to work to help struggling seniors. That could make the difference between hardship and hope for millions of older Americans, and there's not a minute to lose.
Together, we can make a difference for seniors across the country. Thanks for working with us on this important issue.
Sincerely,
Lisa Marsh Ryerson

AND NOW IT'S WINTER - THE GLORIA DULAN-WILSON VERSION

-->

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

My best friend, Annie G. sent this to me this morning (5/29/13).  I read and re-read it several times.  There are many things in there to ponder; but now that 60 is the new 30, I thought I'd take a whack at making this more relevant to us - we who remain and go forward.  Hope you like it. Apologies to Annie G, and to whoever wrote this piece.  My comments are, of course, in RED.
AND THEN IT IS WINTER:
  Beloved...Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about  itself. Each day has    enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34.

You know . . . time has a way of moving quickly and catching you
unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams.

But, here it is ... the winter of my life and it catches me by
surprise...How did I get here so fast? {Too busy having fun, living life, getting in and out of hot water.}
Where did the years go and where did my youth go?{Still got mine in my back pocket} I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. {and now we know they were laughing at us; the same way we can laugh at the kids coming behind us who think they're going to be able to be stupid forever too - cause what you call old and youth is just the level before maturity and wisdom - hopefully they'll make it - a few of us didn't}

But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting gray  {A little Posner, Dark & Lovely, Bigen, or Just for Men or other hair care products will clear that up in a flash - just don't go weird blonde, freaky red, electric blue, or jet black - Black people's hair is naturally Brown/Black)...they move slower and I see an older person now  {Which means you're still here - it's great to be seen on the scene, isn't it?}

Some are in better and some worse shape than me...but, I see the great change...Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be. {No! Now we are walking towers of wisdom; we are the trail blazers; we are the ones that made it possible for those coming behind us to move forward; the way those who came before us did for us - By the way - thank God for OLD, and for having achieved OLD; I'd far rather have achieved OLD, than died too soon, or gone before her time.  Give me "Old" over Dead any day!}
Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! {Now that we don't have to be anywhere unless we wanna be and now that we can set our own time, we can take an hour shower to jazz, blues and old school, while the rest go rushing off to an overrated rush hour - been there, done that - designed the tee shirt!}
And taking a nap is not a treat anymore ... it's mandatory! {It's called a POWER NAP.  We never know what new concept is going to come to mind.]Cause if I don't on my own free will  {WE INVENTED POWER NAPS TO GIVE OUR CREATIVE MINDS TIME TO INCUBATE}... I just fall asleep where I sit!  {Use that time to imagine something beautiful that you'd like to be, do, or have - hey, ya never know}.

And so...now I enter this new season of my life unprepared for all the
aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do
things that I wish I had done but never did! {Of course, we're keeping an eye on Stem Cell and OBAMACARE.  Health Spas, Massage Therapy, Vitamin E, Glucosamine/Chondroitin, aquarobics - antidotes to bad joints.  Meditate on health, don't ruminate on disability.  Don't plan to be out of the game for too long - those plans are still on the drawing board.}
 But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I'm not sure how long it will last...this I know, that when it's over on this earth...it's over. {But in the meantime, I'm going to get out there, party, see my friends, do new things; do some of the old things better; write, flirt, travel, and come up with a new way to enjoy this winter  - house parties, theatre, jazz clubs, yacht parties, cook outs; cook ins; legacy planning} A new adventure will begin!  {NOW!!}

Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things I should have done, but indeed, There are many things I'm happy to have done: {MAKE A LIST OF AT LEAST 100 THINGS YOU'VE DONE THAT YOU'RE EITHER PROUD OF OR YOU'RE GLAD YOU DID - GOOD, BAD OR INDIFFERENT - I DARE YOU - STARTING RIGHT NOW:
 #1 ___, #2 ___, #3 ___, ....................................................It's all in YOUR lifetime.

So, if you're not in your winter yet...let me remind you, that it will
be here faster than you think.{And just think, you're here to enjoy it.  There are so many who never made it past Spring, shot Summer to pieces, fell through Fall, completely botched winter.  And we're not only here, but we got several phases of winter to go through.}

So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! {AND DO IT WELL - SAVOR IT - IT'S TO BE ENJOYED}Don't put things off too long! Life goes by quickly. {i.e. Deliberate but don't procrastinate} - AND DON'T DO DUMB STUFF UNDER THE ILLUSION OF STAYING "YOUNG" - HE SAID CHILD LIKE, NOT CHILDISH}.  So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! {REMEMBER:  When life gives you winter, buy a mink coat - apologies to the Peta people - }
You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today {And make sure your doctor is on your side, and not in your pocket - so you can be here tomorrow, too}; and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember {we are the trailblazers; if they won't listen, put it in a book, put it on a cd or dvd, or casette tape - they will get to winter in their own time, and will be trying to remember what you tried to teach them Black in the day - it's called a living legacy}...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past {THEY HAD BETTER}!

"Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one.
LIVE IT WELL! ENJOY TODAY! DO SOMETHING FUN! BE HAPPY! HAVE A GREAT DAY - {AND WHILE YOU'RE AT IT, DO SOMETHING MEANINGFUL}

Remember "It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and
silver."  - Mental, spiritual, social, psychological, financial, emotional, and physical health should be in balance as much as possible.  And keep your SOUL intact  - AS FOR GOLD AND SILVER (MONEY) DON'T KNOCK IT IF YOU HAVEN'T TRIED IT - IT HEALS A MULTITUDE OF ILLS}.
LIVE HAPPY IN 2013 --- AND BEYOND!!!
 LASTLY, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING
(HERE'S THE FUN PART, FOLKS!):

TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN, YET THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE SO - ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS ( AND YOU CAN START AGAIN TOMORROW TO HAVE EVEN MORE FUN).

~Your kids are becoming you {IT'S ABOUT TIME! I WORKED ON THEM HARD ENOUGH}.....but your grandchildren are perfect!

~Going out is good. Coming home is better! (ESPECIALLY AFTER 3 IN THE MORNING)

~You forget names.... But it's OK because other people forgot they even
knew you (NOW THEY'RE OLD!)

~You realize you're never going to be really good at anything ... especially golf. (BUT IT'S FUN TRYING ANYWAY!!!)

~The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don't care to do them anymore. (I CHANGED THAT LIST LONG A GO - GOT SOME NEW THINGS I'M WORKING ON - WATCH AND BE SURPRISED)

~You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed. It's called "pre-sleep." (YOU'RE RIGHT ABOUT THAT ONE!  I LOVE MY LOUNGE CHAIR - JUST THE RIGHT HEIGHT FOR MY COMPUTER TOO! AND IT MOVES AT THE COMMAND OF THE REMOTE CONTROL - WHEN BEDS START DOING THAT, WE CAN TALK!)~You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch. (YEAH - THAT DOES TAKE SOME TRAINING - BUT BACK TO THE REMOTE - FAST FORWARD, REWIND, FREEZE FRAME, CLOSED CAPTION - ETC.)

~You tend to use more 4 letter words ... "what?"..."when?"... ??? (LOVE)

~Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it's not safe to wear it anywhere. (WEAR IT ANYWAY - NEVER LET LOW LIFES INTIMIDATE YOU INTO NOT ENJOYING YOU)

~You notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless"?!!! (YEAH, GOTTA WORK ON THOSE MICHELLE OBAMA ARMS)

~What used to be freckles are now liver spots. (BACK TO THAT HEALTH SPA! NEED ANOTHER SALT RUB AND MASSAGE)

~Everybody whispers (EXCEPT IN THE JAZZ CLUBS).

~You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet... 2 of which you will never wear.(AND WON'T GET RID OF EITHER)

~But Old is good in some things: Old Songs, Old movies,
OLD SCHOOL
and best of  all, OLD FRIENDS!

Stay well, "OLD FRIEND!" Send this on to other "Old Friends!" and let them laugh in AGREEMENT! (YOU KNOW ME, FOLKS, I'M THE ICONOCLAST - WE'RE NOT GETTING OLD, WE'RE GETTING READY - AND WE'RE GETTING BETTER, AND BETTER, AND BETTER - WE'VE ALREADY REDEFINED OLD, ANY WAY.

It's Not What You Gather, But What You Scatter That Tells What Kind Of Life You Have Lived.
SO LET'S DO THIS - WE'RE 2 GOOD

President Obama Standing Firm in the Face of Lies and Distortions

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

With all the lies being swirled about by the meanstream press, Mitt-twits, Ryan, Akin, and others in an effort to undermine President Obama, I would be totally remiss if I let this day end without sending this wonderful message to the President via Joel and Victoria Osteen.

Everybody needs a boost every once and a while, and that is as true of President Obama as any of the rest of us. And since I know that Blacks in America are praying for him every day, I thought I'd share this with him and the rest of us.

I received it online about 1:30 am on the morning of August 22, 2012 and thought, "how appropriate." The meanstream media is using scare tactics, alleging that he is trying to stop welfare and reduce benefits, cut Medicare, and other blatant lies, leaving several low income and middle class recipients in a quandry as to who to believe, what to do, and what will happen.

And President Obama handles all these slings, arrow, trickery, lies, and deceit with a smile, and a firm resolve. Here is the message from TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria Osteen:

"Anytime you set out to do something great in life, there will be critics. If you’re going to be a great {PRESIDENT}, businessperson, coach, student, leader or employee, there will be opposition. The more success you have, the more opportunities there will be for distractions. The higher you go, the more haters will come out. When you start stretching to a new level and pursuing what God has placed in your heart, the jealous people, the critical people, and the small-minded people come out of the woodwork and start making negative comments, but you don’t have to let that distract you.

If you are under pressure today, if the critical voices are coming against you, know that it’s because you are making a difference. Don’t let them throw you off course. Instead, dig your heels in, set your face like a flint, and say, “I will not get distracted. I will not get drawn into battles that don’t matter. It doesn’t matter what others think; it matters what God thinks! Today, look beyond the critics. Stand strong in adversity. Press forward to what lies ahead and win the prize of life that He has prepared for you!
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, today I choose to let go of the negative voices, offenses and hurts from critical voices. I choose to focus on You and the good plan You have for me. Give me Your peace and joy as I move forward in the victory You have prepared for me in Jesus’ name! Amen" — Joel & Victoria Osteen

Now, in the interest of “separation of church and state” let me say that this is a spiritual message, not a religious one; and I trust that it will be accepted in the spirit of which it was intended. GDW

That said, it appears that President Obama has already been following those very principles, as he takes on the lies that have been hitting the media as of late. Interestingly enough, it's apparently one of those “let's throw it up against the wall and see what sticks” news reporting types. Under the principle that by the time the truth surfaces, a sufficient number of people will have been so intimidated, they most likely will not have done their own due diligence, so that by the time the truth does come through, they will have panicked hundreds of others.

It really means that the President spends as much time doing damage control and debunking the lies, as he does with getting his own message out. However, the Obama campaign has wasted no time in hitting Mitt Romney on his lies about Medicare in an advertisement his campaign has been running in the last several days. The ad had been misleading seniors that Romney would not cut medicare for seniors, when in fact that is exactly what his plan calls for. Additionally, pick Paul Ryan’s budget plan calls for vouchers for seniors, and privatizing Social Security.

According to National Memo: “Paul Ryan has been boasting that he welcomes a debate on medicare because the Republicans have been using their mothers to scare seniors that Obama had cut medicare by $716 billion. Obama's ad uses the independent non-partisan AARP (which represents seniors) to rebut Romney’s lies, and the ad will run in several battleground states, including North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada.

The sad thing is that, since many of the battle ground states are, by definition, dominated by Rep-ugh-blicans, we have to make sure that the messages are getting through. So here's my recommendation: For those of you who have relatives in these states – and if you've immigrated to New York City, it's more likely that you do, than not, make yourself a committee of one to communicate with your relatives, friends, associates, classmates in these states, keeping them abreast of what Obama is doing, and the effort on the part of the detractors in their states to distort the truth.

If they are computer literate, or have a relative or friend who is, forward information via the internet, via email, to them. Get them into chat rooms and make sure they are saturated with the Good News about Obama's Plans for them. You have no idea how deprived they are of current information – especially the seniors, who, like my Mom, will probably never use a computer (she's 89); or my brother, who's computer is sitting on a desk in his home, never hooked up.

Send them updates. Call and have a conversation with them. Mail them material. Don't assume that it will be done by the local – although they are doing their best, it never hurts to hear it from a loved one, someone who is a little closer to the action.

We, as humans, do have the tendency to catastrophize about subjects, especially when we don't have current information. If you have it, share it – here in this neighborhood, and the neighborhood you left behind. Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania California (yes, California), are in dire need of updates and info. If it was possible, I think it would be great to take bus loads to each of these states (we're going to Pennsylvania on the 25th) so people can see and hear first hand, what the rep-ugh-blicans are trying to suppress.
When in doubt, you can log on to the President's Website, or the White House, and get updated.

In the interim, feel free to also appropriate the Osteen message for your own personal use, share it with friends, and at the same time share the fact that as in 2008, when Presidential Candidate said “Yes We Can”, in 2012, not only are we saying “Yes We Can Again,” we are saying “Yes We Will” RE-ELECT PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA.

NEW YORK STATE LEGISLATORS PLEASE STOP MESSING WITH OUR FAMILIES: PRESERVE KINCARE PROGRAMS

by Gloria Dulan-Wilson

I woke up to this alarming message from AARP this morning, and couldn't even do my basic meditations before I got this off my chest.

I am sure that I stand with so many families throughout the state of New York, as well as the host of families right here in the down state areas of New York, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, Westchester, Long Island, etc, who are really kind of tired of having to remind you that people come first, then things.

Families first. Get it? This means that when it comes to budgetary issues, cuts to such issues as kinship programs should never have been on the table in the first place. And to see a headline of this nature from AARP, where many of you who sit there in office right now probably would not have made it had it not been for some relative who stepped in and took care of you when a parent could not, is absolutely ludicrous. And likewise, there are many of you who are known for having helped those in your community who were abandoned by family members or left without family members for reasons beyond their control.

Why such a measure would even be on the table, except to increase funds to help them do even more, I do not understand. What I do know, is that New York is headed for a collision unless it really goes after the real source of the dollars that we need to plug the gaping holes in our budget -- those miscreants on Wall Street. Somehow they have become sacred cows. Somehow, because they are the "big dogs" they are getting a pass, while focus is on the small fish who have little to no clout.

The phrase HELP MAIN STREET, NOT WALL STREET, needs to have a corollary: PUNISH WALL STREET, NOT MAIN STREET. Jesse Jackson once that you have to get the money back from where the money went. Well that's where the money, the ancillary jobs, the industries, etc. went. Our families should not have to bear the brunt of this issue.

So let's stand up to Wall Street and their threats, and make them pay restitution to New York for having put us in the middle of this madness to begin with. Our children, regardless of who their caregivers are, deserve the benefit of knowing that their legislators are on their side and supportive of their living, growing and thriving in a state that cares about them and their families.

Below is the article I received from AARP:

Across New York State, approximately 400,000 children are being raised in kinship families, by grandparents and other relatives. These families are not part of the formal foster care system. They are our traditional, timeless “child welfare” system.

Family members care for children when parents are unable to do so for many reasons. In fact, most children in informal kinship care would be in foster care were it not for grandparents and other relatives. Numerous studies have found that children living in kinship families have better outcomes than children in foster care. The average total cost of placing a child in the foster care system is $46,000. It saves the state money to keep children in the informal kinship system and not place them in an expensive foster care system.

Programs that help these caregivers are now being threatened by the proposed state budget. These programs are not only effective, they save money for the state and its localities. Please click here to learn more and send a message to your legislators urging them to protect these caregivers and the children they support.

I lifted this from the letter I received from AARP. Not having all the computer skills to repro it the way I received it, however, means that you are receiving only the text, as opposed to text and graphics. However rudimentary it may appear, the contents are the same. So please, cut, paste and complete the form and send it to your New York State Assembly member and your senator. Wouldn't hurt to write Governor Paterson a letter as well.

Kincare Programs Could Save the State $46,000 per Child
AARP strongly recommends that the Legislature restore the $2 million in funding to OCFS and the 10% that was cut from the Navigator program. This money will go a long way to helping thousands of Kincare families. It will also save the State money, and, very importantly, it will produce better outcomes for children.

REJECT CUTS TO KINCARE PROGRAMS:

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a constituent, I am extremely concerned with the Governor's proposal to severely cut funding to Kincare programs in New York State. These programs provide case management, respite, support groups, advocacy and legal assistance. They are the only support for more than 350,000 children in private kinship arrangements. I am writing to ask you to reject the Governor's proposed $2 million in funding to OCFS and the 10% that was cut from the Navigator Program in the 2010-2011 Executive Budget.

These programs are not only effective, they save money for the state and its localities. In New York, the average cost of a child in non-specialized foster care is on average $46,000. The average cost of kinship programs is approximately $500 per child. The total cost of all of the state's kinship programs is less than the cost for just 136 children in foster care.

In addition to cost implications, there are numerous studies showing that children raised by family members live in safer and more stable homes than children in the care of non-relatives. A recent study, published in the June 2008, Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, found that children living in kinship families have better outcomes than children in foster care.

I urge you to reject these cuts and fully restore this critical funding which helps thousands of New York families, saves the state money in more expensive foster care, and achieves better outcomes for children.

Please keep me posted on your efforts to protect grandparents and other relatives raising children in New York State.

Sincerely,

Now if you complete this, you can email it to AARP and they will direct it to your legislator. Or you can go online to AARP and download the actual petition letter and it will reach your representative. Regardless of what you decide to do, you need to do it ASAP. Rudimentary is better than nothing.

Naturally, I signed the petition and it will be presented to my Assemblymember this morning. In the interim, I hope that when you receive it, you will do the same. We are not just in a battle for money and finances, there is a balance being struck here for ethics, decency and moral purpose.
