THE PHILADELPHIA JUNETEENTH FAMILY HOSTS THEIR ANNUAL JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION OF LIBERATION AND UNITY JUNE 3rd - JUNE 19th 2024

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Once again, The Philadelphia Juneteenth Family cordially invites Philadelphia, greater Pennsylvania,  and the entire nation, to participate in our joyous, historic 2024 Juneteenth Celebration and Commemoration.  We’ve expanded our celebration and have a lot of events and activities - so mark your calendars, get your family together to come and participate in one of the greatest traditions of BLACK HISTORY and CULTURE:  JUNETEENTH!

June 3rd, 2024 - the first Monday in June -  has been designated by the National Juneteenth Organization as the day of the official Juneteenth Flag raising ceremony - across the US, including the Nation’s Capitol in Washington DC. This will kick off a series of celebrations that will be held across the nation.

Philadelphia Juneeteenth Family's Flag Raising Ceremony  - which is open to the community -  will be held at 11:00 a.m.outside Philadelphia’s City Hall along  North Broad Street.  The guest of honor, former Pennsylvania attorney general candidate, Ms. Keir Bradford-Gray, will be keynote speaker.

Other special invited guests include Philadelphia’s First Black Female Mayor the Hon. Dr. Cherelle Parker!  City Councilwoman Jamie Gauthier, who will read the General Order #3 - the Historical Emancipation Document,   which informed slaves in Texas they had finally been freed on June 19, 1865. - two years after other slaves had been emancipated.

Other Philadelphia Dignitaries include Rev. Dr. Malcolm Byrd of Forum Philly and Pastor of Hope’s Beacon Baptist Church; Kenyatta Johnson, President of City Council; Gwen Ragsdale, Executive Director of the Lest We Forget Museum of Slavery; The Hon. Voffee Jabateh, President of ACANA, and co-founder/developer of Africa Town,  Anthony Murphy, Executive Director at Town Watch Integrated Services/UNIA ACL RC 2020 President General; and Rochelle Bilal, Sheriff of Philadelphia.

Juneteenth celebrates the final end of slavery in the United States. It is also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Juneteenth Independence Day, and Black Independence Day. On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, TX, and announced the end of the civil war and the end of slavery under General Order #3. Although the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves two-and-a-half years earlier on January 1, 1863, many enslavers continued to enslave Black people despite President Abraham Lincoln’s decree!  So two years later after finally being given their freedom in Texas, June 19th - or “Juneteenth” became the symbolic date of African American freedom.

SPECIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: During our 2023 Juneteenth celebration, we were honored with the Grandmother of Juneteenth, Ms. Opal Lee - who walked nearly 4000 miles to have Juneteenth recognized as a national holiday. President Joe Biden has just awarded Ms. Lee with the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM. We would like to congratulate her for this honor and for her tireless efforts in behalf of Black People throughout the US and the world!

The members of the Philadelphia Juneteenth Family salute and congratulate the great Mrs. Opal Lee on receipt of the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM!
