There are so many reasons to be proud, elated and happy! So many ways this history will be recorded; so many things our teachers can teach in the Philadelphia Classrooms where so many students, who - UNTIL NOW - were being dis-educated, but now have so many tangible, real examples and evidence of history in the making - right here in their city.
Teachers now have real live lessons to choose from in their living curriculum, that students can relate to and learn from. Teachers now have real life "NOW - Today" scenarios to teach from. Teachers now have so many opportunities to take real life history and teach our youth about how politics work, why voting is so important, what pride in accomplishments mean, and how no one is ever defeated if they continue to try and respect their self worth. And they can use their mayor CHERELLE L PARKER as a primary example of how to succeed even with the odds against you.
Cherelle L. Parker, who came from humble beginnings, has managed to develop the inner self worth and discipline to reach a lifelong goal.
Talk about contemporary Philadelphia History in the making!
There are so many things students and constituents can and will learn from our new Mayor who believes in them and their future, and is leading through example on how to be catalysts for positive change and upliftment!
Philadelphia youth can be proud of the fact that their parents, aunts, uncles, neighbors stepped up to the plate and voted overwhelmingly for Cherelle Parker as mayor. What a great example of the power of our votes, what a great teachable moment for years and decades to come.
Among the many wonderful Historical Highlights, none other than Emmy Award Winning Actress, Sheryl Lee Ralph, star of the hit TV show "ABBOTT ELEMENTARY" penned and recited a poem she personally wrote for the new mayor. She cut her vacation short to personally attend Mayor Parker's inauguration!
And, making it even more historically auspicious, the Honorable Marcia L. Fudge, first female secretary of HUD (Housing and Urban Development) presided over the Mayor's formal swearing in.

To show that her devotion to the progress of Philadelphia knows no bounds, Mayor Parker even prepared a 100 Day - Action Plan, which was distributed to the audience and participants at the swearing in ceremonies. If you did not receive one, I recommend you contact City Hall for your own copy. It's full of wonderful projects and programs to enhance and expand Philadelphia.
Congratulations are in order to City Council President Jordan Harris, as well as all the newly elected and returning members of the Philadelphia City Council - now considered the most diverse City Council in the history of the city.
But I would be totally remiss if I didn't congratulate Philadelphia's other History-Making First - Rochelle Bilal, who was re-elected this year, after having served as Philadelphia's First Female sheriff, to continue doing a spectacular job in her role.
Philadelphia, home of the Liberty Bell, the Declaration of Independence, one of the first 13 colonies, the epic book: THE PHILADELPHIA NEGRO, by W.E.B. DuBois, Octavius Catto, Paul Robeson, Marian Anderson, and so many other historical figures, has made history once again, and poised to revolutionize the future of this Great City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection!
So happy I was here to be a witness to it.
Congratulations Philadelphians!!
