By Gloria DULAN-Wilson

PHILADELPHIA'S IMMIGRANT

AND

MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES

UNITE TO HOLD MAYORAL AND OTHER CANDIDATES ACCOUNTABLE

AT COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF PHILADELPHIA

The eyes of the nation will be on Philadelphia as a diverse coalition of organizations and community leaders sponsor an immigrant-focused Mayoral Open House Meeting. The Open House, hosted by United Voices for Philadelphia and partners, will take place on Saturday, April 29th, at the Community College of Philadelphia with many Mayoral candidates attending to speak, answer important questions, and meet the diverse audience.

The event is sponsored by a broad coalition of organizations, community leaders, and members, including African, Asian, Caribbean, Arab, Latino, Muslim, new immigrants, and others. This unique coalition of diverse groups has joined together to strengthen the voice of underrepresented communities and ensure their needs are heard.

The Mayoral Open House Event also includes an opportunity for attendees to meet City Council, Judicial, and Row Office candidates in person and learn more about their offices and who they are. This is a crucial opportunity for underheard immigrant and refugee communities to hold primary candidates accountable for protecting and advocating for them.

The event will provide interpretation services upon request and closed captioning for the hearing impaired. Transportation will also be available for those who need it, and refreshments will be served.

The 30+ host organizations for the event include Americans for Democratic Action - SEPA, Arab American CDC, African Communities Together (ACT), Africom, Asian Americans United, BOLT, Caribbean Community in Philadelphia, Ceiba, Chinese Metro, Committee of Seventy, El Comite de Trabajadorxs de Restaurantes, Faculty & Staff Federation of Community College of Philadelphia, Filipino Executive Council of Greater Philadelphia (FECGP), Free Migration

Project, Global Philadelphia Association, Gente de Venezuela, HIAS PA, Indochinese American Council, Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) Philadelphia, Juntos, Make the Road PA, Nationalities Service Center, New Sanctuary Movement, One PA, PA Youth Vote, Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition (PICC), Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation (PCDC), Philadelphia Committee on City Policy, United Voices for Philadelphia, The Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians, and others.

The Mayoral Open House Event is a unique opportunity for the community to come together, engage with candidates, and hold them accountable for their commitments to protecting and advocating for the growing immigrant and marginalized communities in Philadelphia (now around 25% of the City’s Population). This event will surely attract national attention, and United Voices for Philadelphia encourages all community members to attend and participate in this critical event.
