GDW EVENT ALERT: ACANA PRESENTS: Bridging The Gap: 200 Years of US - Liberia Ties - Wednesday May 25, 2022

By Gloria DULAN-Wilson
Hello All:

This Wednesday, May 25, is World African Heritage Day - which was established in 1963 during the beginning of the liberation of African countries from colonization and oppression.  This year marks the 59th Anniversary celebration.  What better way to commemorate and celebrate it than a tribute to Liberia which is celebrating its 200th Anniversary year! And what better place to celebrate both events than Lincoln University's Graduate Center.  Lincoln University, the world's first HBCU, established as a degree granting university in 1854 - six  years before the outbreak of the Civil War, was established to provide missionaries and educators to Liberia, West Africa.  The ties between Lincoln and Liberia have remained cordial ever since.  I remember several of my friends from Liberia who were at Lincoln to get their degrees and return to their home to take what they learned back to further enhance their country.  While still others of my classmates remained in the US and distinguished themselves in their chosen fields of interests.  This is one in the many events that will be featured on a monthly basis leading up to the gala celebration in November of Liberia's bi-centennial.
