Hello All:
First
of all, please allow me to say: Congratulations to Brother/Friend Eric
Adams - Mayor Elect of New York City!! And to my fellow New Yorkers:
"You've definitely got the right one baby - in more ways than one!" But
then, Eric Adams has never been a one dimensional person. He's
definitely the full package!
For
those of us who can say we knew Mayor-elect Eric Adams when, we can
also say that there was never a problem or issue that he tackled or that
came under his scrutiny that he didn't solve or resolve. It's been
both interesting, inspirational and instructive to watch him rise from
NYPD to New York State Senate, to the first Black Boro President of
Brooklyn, and now to Mayor of New York City. I first met Eric Adams and
members of the NYPD/Transit Grand Council of NYPD Guardians in 1990,
when I was fundraising account executive for the Black United Fund of
New York (BUFNY); and opened me up to the fact that some of the
smartest men on the planet were Black policemen.
However,
there are probably many outside the Big Apple who are probably unaware
of another major triumph - in addition to this pivotal mayoral election
- that benefits us all, across state lines; and in an arena with which
many of us would never have connected him - and that is in the arena of
Health and Nutrition.
In
fact, during the COVID-19 Pandemic that blanketed New York City, he
managed to publish a book - HEALTHY AT LAST! - to help those who suffer
from chronic diabetes and other diseases - through the adaptation of a
Plant-Based Diet. "HEALTHY AT LAST!" not only debunks the myth that
Black people are prone to either die, go blind, lose a limb, or be on
medication for a lifetime from diabetes. He also debunked the myth that
because one family member suffered from diabetes, all other family
members would also suffer from it as well.
His
book, HEALTHY, AT LAST!, published last year during the height of the
Pandemic has been a total game changer for those who have taken the time
to read it, follow his path, and adapt the life saving healthy eating
regimen he himself now follows assiduously. Most of us who were in the
throes of both surviving or not being contaminated by the Corona-virus,
as well as dealing with what was clearly a Presidential election that
was the battle for the soul of America, may not have been aware of it. I
actually just came across the YouTube interview yesterday - November 14
- and could not stop watching, and marveling at how much Eric has
accomplished as the result of his own incisive foray into bustng the
myth that diabetes is either inevitable or incurable.
In
addition to dealing with his own health issues, he has voiced concern
over the fact that 70% of children under age 12 may have major health
issues due to dietary miscues on both the part of poor nutritional
quality foods in the schools and at home. He has declared "Meatless
Mondays" in Brooklyn schools in order to begin helping students learn
about taking control of their own health by making healthy decisions.
(BTW:
Meatless Mondays is a great idea, and appears to be working - which is
why it makes me wonder why it is that there is a move to take the
control of the Schools out of the hands of the Mayor - perhaps there are
those who resent the fact that they won't be able to continue poisoning
our kids with junk foods laced with additives - a multi-billion dollar
industry in New York. With the mayor no longer having control, they
would be able to continue undermining their health and lining their
pockets. As with anything else, New Yorkers need to beware of being
emotionally manipulated by outside interests pretending to "protect" the
school system. IJS!!) It's interesting that while our children are
being bombarded with junk food commercials - cereals saturated with
sugar and artificial color and flavor, 3rd graders in Japan are taught
how to prepare their own food, and serve each other nutritional
lunches. Rather than "trick" their kids into learning to eat healthy
foods, they are taught to appreciate and embrace learning as a positive
way of life.
Many
of us north of the age of 55 remember taking classes in Home Economics,
which included cooking, food, nutrition, home planning and sewing. As a
result, we were not likely to be as prone to junk foods and
overindulgence in sweets as those who came later. We could go to a
supermarket and recognize the difference between collard, mustard,
turnip greens and kale - now most of the knowledge comes from whatever
happens to be on the TV commercials - SMH.
Mayor-Elect
Adams also uncovered, and discussed openly another major health issue
that has plagued the Black community for eons (and which I am currently
going through, as well) and that is the lack of knowledge or
understanding about the difference between Black patients and white
patients in the medical profession dominated by caucasoid physicians.
There is a tendency to lump us into one category; not take our symptoms
seriously, discount our level of education, or capacity to follow a
regimen - as well as little to no understanding of cultural influences
that may or may not be present. I've been through the gamut as well -
with a handful of Black doctors willing to toe the line instead of
taking a step outside the box and provide us with that extra depth of
knowledge they have as the result of themselves being Black.
In
the interest of my/our own health imperative, and the fact that there
are so many myths about Plant Based Nutrition - and from being a former
vegetarian myself - I'm sharing links to Mayor-Elect Eric Adams
interviews on YouTube, as well as links to his book, HEALTHY AT LAST!
And you know how I am - I don't mince my words or research when I'm
trying to make sure you are aware of what's GOOD FOR WHAT AILS YOU.

Furthering the need to be in control of your health as a Black person, there are organizations
that are also working in behalf of Black people to ensure you have a
more comprehensive continuity of care/cure, The Black Women's Health
Imperative, and The Rare Disease Diversity Coalition are working with
those who have had difficulty getting full medical benefit for the
conditions they suffer from:

RARE DISEASE DIVERSITY COALITION

Like
Mayor-Elect Adams, you have to learn to advocate for your own health
and well being. The two aforementioned organizations may be helpful in
reviewing your medical records and experiences and providing you, or
your attending medical staff with the additional resources you need for
total healing. Many of us die from traditions that no longer serve us,
peer pressure, not wanting to "offend" your doctor; or fear that you
don't have sufficient knowledge to take a stand in your own behalf.
Hopefully these and other organizations can make the critical difference
to healing or being trying to live while ingesting debilitating
medications for the rest of your life that maintain the illness, instead
of curing it.
Hope this has been helpful to you. If so, please drop me a note in eclecticallyblacknews@gmail.com
NOW THAT YOU KNOW
WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?
Stay Blessed &
ECLECTICALLY BLACK
