NYC Moves Into Phase 4 & Tribute to John Lewis

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

Great News!  New York is now in Phase 4!  It means we're turning the corner and are pretty much out of the woods.  Hopefully we'll be back to, or better than, normal!  There have been so many challenges, but NYC came through like the champions you are!

We are so going to miss the leadership of the great John Lewis - he made his transition to the realm of Ancestor/Angels - but has left a great legacy and some major shoes to fill.

Dear District 35,
Today, New York City enters Phase 4 of reopening. Industries that will be able to reopen include; Professional Sports (WITHOUT fans), low-risk Outdoor Arts & Entertainment, and Media Production may resume, while following necessary protocols to keep both workers, and patrons safe. It is critical that all industries follow the guidelines put in place, as COVID-19 remains very much a threat to the health and well-being of our City.

To that end, indoor dining, and indoor cultural institutions will not be permitted to reopen. Looking at the data, we see that although New York City is on track to continue effectively combating the spread of COVID-19, a majority of our country is suffering the worst battle against COVID-19 we have experienced since the virus' onset. On July 17, the United States reported over 75,000 cases in one day. We are currently reporting the highest number of COVID-19 cases worldwide, with approximately 3.9 million cases having been reported.

In New York City, we experienced some of the greatest tragedy through the wrath of this virus. While we must move forward with cautious optimism, we also must never forget what we lost, and the hard work it took to begin experiencing a down-trend in community spread. Our work is not complete, and it is up to each and every New Yorker to do their part in preventing another uptick in cases.

If this virus and ensuing tragedy and chaos has proven anything, it's that New Yorkers are not only tough, but we're always #StrongerTogether.

Please remember to take a look at the resources we've provided below for Phase 4 reopening, as well as information on today's Heat Advisory and various programs that are committed to keeping New Yorkers cool!

BIPOC Mental Health Month
July is BIPOC Mental Health Month!

"Continuous exposure to violence via media and news reports can and does take a serious toll on mental health—especially for Black people. It amplifies the collective unease and distress felt in Black communities around the country, resulting in stress, increased heart rate and blood pressure, muscle tension, migraines, sleeplessness, and feelings of sadness, anger, fear, and hopelessness, Candice Hargons, PhD, director of the Center for Healing Racial Trauma, told Women's Health."

I'm rarely nervous or at a loss for words but meeting The Congressman John Lewis was one of those rare and special moments. ⁣
Congressman Lewis was a guest lecturer at the Brooklyn Public Library in 2015 to discuss his award winning graphic novel trilogy. It was a particularly interesting conversation because the trilogy is inspired by a 1950s comic book that was edited by Dr. King that inspired him to join the struggle. ⁣
Congressman Lewis reminds us that the impossible is so possible with focus, sacrifice, courage and patience. His passing marks the end of an era. He was one of the greats who demonstrated exemplary leadership way before he entered Congress. He will be missed.⁣
Rest In Peace to a national treasure, Congressman John Lewis.  Born on February 21, 1940 in Alabama, he was a civil rights icon known for putting his body on the line for justice, freedom, and dignity.⁣⁣

We thank you for your optimism and perseverance. There are many lessons you’ve left behind for us all. 🙏🏽⁣⁣

Update from the Governor
"We did the impossible as New Yorkers - we stepped up and conquered the COVID-19 virus and now we have to protect the progress that we have made," Governor Cuomo said. "One of the main threats to our progress is the number of congregations that
we're seeing across the state, but especially in downstate, primarily
of young people, and we saw it again over the weekend. It is a problem, and I'm telling you in plain New York speak that it's stupid and it has to stop. This not just morality, these restaurants and
bars are breaking the law and they are going to make it bad for
everyone else because if this continues we're going to have to roll
back the reopening plan and close all bars and restaurants.
ECLECTICALLY BLACK NEWS BLOG:  I'm weighing in on what Laurie said - unless you are trying to outdo the death tolls in Florida, or unless you are trying to outstupid other states who have defied common sense and are now suffering the consequences, you need to get a grip and comply with the rules that saved your lives to begin with.  Wear your face masks, maintain social distance, maintain sanitary conditions - I've always given New Yorkers higher marks for having more intelligence and ingenuity than any other state in the US - It's why we're the go-to place for most of the intelligent, creative people from all over the world -
This past year we set records on having the highest number of people afflicted with COVID19; we set records on how to manage the pandemic; and we set records on how to come out of it and survive.
So are you now trying to set records on how to shoot yourselves in the foot?
STOP IT!!
NOW THAT YOU KNOW
WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO
ABOUT IT?
Stay Blessed &
