EXTRA: OKLAHOMA STUDENTS BEING EXPELLED FROM SCHOOL FOR WEARING TRADITIONAL AFRICAN CLOTHING

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

ECLECTICALLY BLACK NEWS EXTRA:

BEING A NATIVE OKLAHOMAN I SAY KUDOS TO THE YOUNG BLACK STUDENTS WHO ARE TAKING A STAND FOR WHO THEY ARE!!

It appears that there are some redneck strongholds alive and well and skulking around Oklahoma. And it appears they are on the late show - because Oklahoma never was and never will be a slave state - and never has nor will it ever have a slave mentality. And any cracker - yes I said cracker - (regardless of color) school system that thinks it can denigrate and disrespect our Black history and culture has to go.

I expect all Black Oklahomans, man, woman, child - regardless of their status - to stand with and behind these kids. I also expect them to oust any school system or school board that deigns to disrespect who we are. We who were raised in Oklahoma City, attended all Black Oklahoma City Schools - Dunbar Elementary, Moon Junior High School (yeah, I went there) and DOUGLASS SR. HIGH SCHOOL (go TROJANS!!!) learned our Black and Indian Heritage from Kindergarten all the way through Senior High School - long before there was a Black History Month (when all we had was Negro History Week); and we didn't wait until a designated month to learn it - we learned it every day, regardless of what class we were in - English, Science, Math, History, Social Studies, etc.  It was always tied in to US - BLACK PEOPLE.  We were Black and Proud before James Brown even wrote the song.

Before the white eyes came we had 67 All Black Towns - we still have 13 - and they're all over 175 years old - and our ancestors and progeny have some of the highest and best educations on the planet - without interference from meanstream menials.

And though this is the allegedly the 21st century of diversity, we're not going to allow our heritage or history to be hijacked by some lowlevel administrative minion and pushed into obscurity because they don't have a sense of quality.
Our Children's futures are still near and dear to us - capice???

If it appears that I am taking sides in this - you had better believe it. And so must we all.  Regardless of whether we still live in Oklahoma, or not - our OKLAHOMA BLACK and/or INDIAN ROOTS STILL RUN DEEP - and that Red Earth still belongs to us.

Now, get out there and stand with our youth!!  Pass this on - share - broadly.

PROUD OF OUR KIDS.

Stay Blessed &
