By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

For those of you who say there are no employment opportunities for women in Philadelphia, this should be of special interest:

Now, if this doesn't apply to you, please don't let it sit - pass it on, email it to a friend - make sure the women in your circle, community, etc, who may have daughters, sisters, nieces, etc., get a copy of this.  This was sent to me courtesy State Rep. Stephen Kinsey's office - but is open to women all over Philadelphia:

SEPTA Key Travel Wallet Minimum Load/Re-Load Lowering to $1.00 at Station Kiosks

In response to customer feedback, SEPTA is lowering the minimum load for the Travel Wallet on SEPTA Key Cards to $1.00 at station kiosks. The previous minimum load was $5.00.

SEPTA has been testing $1.00 minimum loads at selected kiosks this spring, and it is now available for customers at 12 stations on the Market-Frankford and Broad Street Lines. Current locations include Frankford, 69th Street Transportation and Olney Transportation Centers, and 52nd Street, Walnut/Locust, Snyder, 15th Street, Ellsworth/Federal, Spring Garden (BSL), North Philadelphia, 60th Street and 30th Street Stations.

The $1.00 option will be added at more station kiosks each week, and it will be available at all Market-Frankford and Broad Street Line stations by Monday, July 8. The $1.00 load option is available for customers using cash, debit or credit cards for transactions at SEPTA Key Kiosks.

SEPTA is making this change in response to feedback from customers who have asked for a lower minimum load. With the $1.00 option, customers have more flexibility to add funds to their Key Card as they travel. By using the Travel Wallet on the Key Card, customers ensure that they get the discounted $2.00 single-ride fare and eligible $1.00 transfers.

This is the latest change made to the SEPTA Key in response to customer feedback - and the second aimed specifically at addressing the concerns of riders who may need to replenish their Travel Wallet on a daily or per-ride basis with cash. SEPTA took a first step in this direction last year in lowering the minimum Travel Wallet load from $10 to $5.

SEPTA reminds all customers to register their SEPTA Key Card as soon as they purchase it to protect against loss and theft. Also, by registering within 30 days of their purchase, customers will receive a credit to their Travel Wallet for the $4.95 new card fee.

SEPTA Completes Sustainability at Southern District Bus Depot

SEPTA recently celebrated the completion of three sustainability projects at its Southern Bus Depot as part of its award-winning sustainability plan, SEP-TAINABLE. The projects unite SEPTA's commitment to the environment and financial responsibility. With these projects, SEPTA has transformed the more than 100-year-old facility into one of the most sustainable facilities in the transit industry.

First, SEPTA launched twenty-five Proterra Battery Electric Buses (BEBs). The buses will run on routes 79 and 29. While buses contribute to 44 percent of SEPTA's emissions, these buses provide a zero-tailpipe emissions alternative. The BEBs highlight SEPTA's commitment to reduce carbon emissions. As Christine Knapp, the Director of the Office of Sustainability for the City of Philadelphia stated, "Nationally, transportation represents 28 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, compared to just 17 percent in Philadelphia.” The project will remain budget neutral thanks to a grant from the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) Low or No Emissions Program (Low-No Grant). SEPTA now has the largest fleet of BEBs on the East Coast.

Second, SEPTA inaugurated its Southern Bus Depot Stormwater Retrofit Project. This project will capture and manage more than seven acres of water on-site in a surface-level bioretention basin and two large underground retention basins. The system will filter and slowly release stormwater into the sewer system, reducing combined sewer overflow during high-rainfall events and keeping Philadelphia's waterways cleaner. The project was undertaken with financial support from the Philadelphia Water Department, which manages the city's "Green Cities, Clean Waters" stormwater management plan.

Finally, SEPTA partnered with PECO and Constellation Energy, a Private Energy Service Company (ESCO), to finance energy-saving capital upgrades in the bus depot. These capital upgrades include: high-efficiency LED lighting, advanced controls, HVAC upgrades, and building envelope improvements. The improvements will reduce SEPTA's energy demands, emissions, and will reduce utility costs by more than $200,000 annually.
