Hello All:
It is refreshing and encouraging to know that there are still some people taking an active role and concern about the direction and development of our youth. We seem to have fallen into such a low level of morality and self worth and self love, that we have come to accept the disrespectful, disgusting images, lyrics, behaviors of our youth - the negative examples they set for those younger who are coming behind them, who see their fame as an affirmation despite the vulgar language, behavior and images they are portraying.
Black people are the only people who specialize in saying negative things about themselves and each other. We are the only people who try to out do each other in how many negative and ugly things we say to and about each other and ourselves. We are the only people who are paid to say as many ugly negative things about each other and ourselves. The meanstream media is in the business of making Black people look as ignorant, ugly, immoral, and violent as possible - and we are complicit in this effort. We've put money above morals - and then when our people fail to prosper mentally, physically, educationally or spiritually, we make it their fault. Our artists have portrayed images that consistently stereotype us as ignorant, immoral, who use four letter words as thought it's normal, ordinary conversation. They call it being independent, edgy, and a ton of other rationalities none of which serve our highest and best good individually and collectively.
The National Congress of Black Women has a project call RESPECT US, that is targeting these groups, the negative behaviors, attitudes. verbiage that denigrate Black people. They learned that a girl group called "City Girls," known for their vulgarity, profanity and pornographic vulgar behavior, will be featured performers at this year's Essence Festival in New Orleans.
Dr. E Faye Williams, Esq., president of the organization, has penned a letter to Essence in reference to this group, and their objection to their lyrics and images. I am printing the letter in its entirety - not something that I normally do, since I do not allow profanity on my Blog - but it goes to the purpose of not having this group featured as accepible as a positive example of who we are and what we're about as Beautiful Black Women.
Dr. Williams is incredulous that any one from Essence has seen this group's performance and invite them or perform any way; or is it that even Essence has allowed their standards to slip like so many others in society?
If those lyrics don't disturb, disgust & disappoint you, then you are part of the problem. It goes to how we are raising our girls to be young women. What are we teaching them, what direction are we giving them, who are we helping them aspire to become?
While Dr. Williams is not about censorship, she is, however, against co-signing, sponsoring or fostering behaviors, statements and images that denigrate us as a people or individuals. I think that those who agree with her should also compose letters to Essence objecting to the performance of this group before women who are seeking to “SERVE BLACK WOMEN, DEEPLY."

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
We have a project called Respect Us, so we keep up with so-called artists who
perform this hate-filled garbage that denigrates Black women and the Black Community.
I have been informed that the group called City Girls has been invited to perform
at the Essence Festival this year.
First, I pray that this is not true. Second, if it is true, I pray that no one at Essence has
seen this group perform. Third, if they are invitees, I pray that you will withdraw the
invitation as they're not being reflective of who Black women are. They certainly do not
reflect who we are, and I am sure many others would say the same.
Please let me know if this group indeed will be performing at the Essence Festival ASAP
so that we know how to handle this matter. I would like to inform our members who were
planning to attend the Festival what they will be hearing if they attend. It is my understanding that the Festival media kit says the mission is
“SERVE BLACK WOMEN, DEEPLY."
Truly this group does not serve Black women in any way. In case you haven't heard
their filth, below are some of their lyrics you might want to consider before having them attend.
The City Girls have been invited to perform at the Essence Fest in July.
They are basically a pornographic rap group. Below are the lyrics to their latest
hit song which is hot rotation throughout ratchet radio stations that
