GDW EVENT ALERT September 1+ - Revving up for Fall? Get Ready!

By Gloria Dulan-Wilson

Hello All:

Well, it's official - August was the fastest, most event filled month ever thus far.  But September promises to give it a lot of competition.   And if I hadn't been forced to sit out the last two weeks because of a procedure to cure my ailing left knee, I probably would have been right out there with you.  But I'm sitting here, with her (my knee of course) propped up on a pillow, giving her the rest, care, pampering and ice packs she so richly deserves.

In the meantime, I continue to receive information, invitations, notifications of all that's going on in our wonderful, crazy mixed universe.  It needs to be shared - so that you can get out there and take advantage of the fun, info, camaraderie that we generate.  So, here we go!

NEW YORK

DATE CHANGE: CONVERSATION & COCKTAILS
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Richardson for Assembly has changed the date for our highly anticipated Conversation & Cocktails fundraiser to Thursday, September 1, 2016 from 6:00PM to 9:00PM at Maxwell Restaurant & Bar on 259 Kingston Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11213. This change means more opportunities to connect with leaders, business owners, tastemakers and residents of the 43rd Assembly District as we sip on cocktails and engage in delightful conversation!

Dear Friend,

Are you a minority or woman business owner who has been unfairly denied a loan? Have you been made to go through extensive and unnecessary processes in order to obtain a loan? We want to hear your story!

On behalf of the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus and The Black Institute we would like to formally invite you to attend our town forum, in which we will be discussing disparities in credit and capital access for M/WBE's.

BUDWEISER MADE IN AMERICA FEATURES RIHANNA

"Budweiser invests in fan experiences at music festivals because they have become more than just places to hear live music -- they are cultural moments where people expect to also experience their other passion points, like food, design, technology, and of course, ice cold Buds,” said Ricardo Marques, vice president on Budweiser in a statement to Billboard. “Budweiser Made in America will cap off an enormous season for Budweiser, during which we celebrated the most American summer of this generation. Returning to historical Philadelphia this Labor Day weekend will be the perfect send-off party.”
The festival's Rocky, Liberty and Tidal stages will be live streamed entirely on Tidal. The show will benefit United Ways in Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey and Berks County, PA for educational and health initiatives. Beyonce and The Weekend served as last year's M.I.A. Fest headliners.

Opening Reception for Moe Brooker: Shorthand For The Real
View this email in your browser

Moe Brooker, artist and former professor of art at Parsons School of Design, PAFA, Cleveland Institute of Art and Moore College of Art and Design, wanted to paint the joyous and the spiritual aspects of African American life but felt figurative painting did not provide the symbols. Thus his successful move to abstraction. Influenced by both graffiti and music, particularly jazz, both improvisational art forms where options are chosen in the moment, where spontaneity is instantaneous and the music conjures colors. Come witness the vibrancy and energy contained in these masterworks.

Location: Double Tree Standng O at Broad & Locust

From the celebrated author of The Secret Life of Bees, a #1 New York Times bestselling novel about two unforgettable American women.

Hetty "Handful" Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke's daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.
.
This exquisitely written novel is a triumph of storytelling that looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will leave no reader unmoved.

WASHINGTON, DC

SEPTEMBER 14 - 18 CONGRESSIONAL BLACK CAUCUS
46th ANNUAL LEGISLATIVE CAUCUS WEEKEND

The CBCF Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) is the leading policy conference on issues impacting African Americans and the global black community. Thought leaders, legislators and concerned citizens engage on economic development, civil and social justice, public health and education issues. More than 9,000 people attend 70 public policy forums and much more. Join subject experts, industry leaders, elected officials and citizen activists to explore today’s issues from an African-American perspective.

This marks my 31st year of covering the Congressional Black Caucus - and it is an honor and a privilege to be among so many Black people dedicated to and focused on the future of Black people here in America, Africa and across the Diaspora.

Black educators would do well to organize field trips for their students so that they can see - first hand - their legislators and how much they really do work for our interests, despite the overlay of a repuglycon based rapacious congress.

CBCF To Honor Cicely Tyson, Richard Roundtree and Dionne Warwick with Lifetime Achievement Awards at
20th Annual Celebration of Leadership in the Fine Arts
Ceremony Also Presents Next Generation Artists

WASHINGTON—The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF) announced that legendary actors Cicely Tyson, Richard Roundtree, and music icon Dionne Warwick will accept awards for their lifetime achievements in the arts during the 20th Annual Celebration of Leadership in the Fine Arts. The awards ceremony, which will take place Sept. 14 at the Sidney Harman Hall, 610 F Street NW in Washington, D.C. from 8:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m., is organized in cooperation with the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Spouses Visual and Performance Arts Scholarship program. This event will mark the start of the CBCF’s 46th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC), one of the nation’s leading public policy conferences.

“With a lifetime of entertaining and educating us, this year’s honorees have also distinguished themselves as remarkable leaders and passionate advocates for the arts and arts education,” said CBCF president and CEO A. Shuanise Washington. “Their outstanding contributions and continuing commitment to the arts make them ideal to help elevate the visibility of the CBC Spouses Visual and Performance Arts Scholarship Program. The awards are conferred on artists whose legacy includes not only extraordinary works but a commitment to cultivating future generations of artists.”
